New lines in terrorism

New lines in terrorism

: Just as apparently al-Qaeda-backed terrorists in Russia crossed a new line in attacking innocent civilians, I wonder whether Vladimir Putin will cross new lines in hunting them down and attacking and exterminated the the swine. He’ll have many around the world rooting him on. We’ll still be fretting the niceties of a war on terrorism. He’ll be going batshit.

: And by chance, at this moment, I happen to turn to Death in Gaza on HBO, where masked terrorist slime of the Palestinian branch are showing off a young boy they’re training as a terrorist. Slime. Slime. Slime. To use children in your crimes is every bit as evil as victimizing them.

A captured terrorist was shown on Russian TV, begging for his life:
“Of course I pitied the children, I swear to Allah. I have children myself. I didn’t shoot. I swear to Allah,” he said. “I don’t want to die. I swear to Allah, I want to live.”
They don’t beg like that when we catch them. We’re doing something wrong.

Wondering if Putin will “cross new lines”.
Here is a wonderful article on just this very topic of crossing new lines.
Unfortunately, most of the media; elite America and Europe will be dragged kicking and screaming.
This article was written just before the war with Iraq – but still quite relevant to the topic – and is definitely worth the read.

Yeah let’s look down in shame because we as a society are not prepared to countenance our soliders routinely torturing innocents to death, gang-raping civilians and side of the road executions. Jeff, you’ve given me no reason to think badly of you, so will assume you know nothing about the Chechen conflict by your implicit admiration of Russian actions, rather than you know about it and then heartily endorse it. I mean christ man, read any human rights report you find on the actions of the Russians there in Chechenya.
And I’m very, very dubious of anything this Russian government says about this entire incident being connected to Al-Queda. It may result that it was, but I’m going to need more evidence than some ex-KGB guy giving a press conference.
What we need to do is separate the militants from the normal society. We need to do that all over the world, and we don’t do that by bullshit wars, we don’t do that by endorsing a horrific chechen conflict. Find terrorists, kill’em. But don’t target civilian populations so creating ever more terrorists. It’s just common sense and self-preservation.

  5. Kat Avatar

Well, Franky, tell the bastards not to target us and we won’t target them–but another attack here and they had better run for their filthy caves like another creep did. I will never accept terrorism and accept the blame–I will only blame the barbarian bastards who perpetrate the crimes. Muslims had better be careful because the world is waking up. Do you know of any country free from islamic terrorism??

  8. Franky Avatar

    Kat,
It comes down to a simple worldview difference. If a group of Chechens, carried out 9/11 I would never even consider nuking their home country. I would expend every single resource possible to hunting and killing those who did it, but minimising civilian deaths at every step of the way. The Russians are not doing that. They are raping and torturing an entire nation for the actions of the terrorists. I will never agree that right, and struggle to see how anyone can think it right.
No one in their right mind would defend the actions, but what do we expect the Chechens to do in response to this onslaught? Send letters to American congressmen? Same there in Palestine. What do you expect these people to do? If in response to certain actions, terrorism might result, don’t you think – however small – that the committer of the actions might share some part of the blame?

Remember to vote your rage, Jeff. Those emotions are there for a reason. But enough paradox.

  10. Kat Avatar

I would suggest the Chechens catch the terrorists and deal with them, turn them in–same as Palestine–but don’t support the creeps,or train your kids to be killers, and then scream like a banshee when that kid with the AK47 gets killed–that is no kid–it’s a freaking terrorist.
Tell me, Franky, why is no country on earth free from this islamic terrorism? Is every country guilty of offending those poor muslims? What is our crime–being a living infidel?
So do you think that because Nazi kids were killed we should have found the Nazis one by one. How many more Jews would have roasted? Today’s islamofascism is yesterday’s Naziism. After the Koran, the most popular book among muslims is Mein Kampf.
And no, I have NEVER thought we deserved 911. I watched 7 Days in September on A/E last night and I hated those bastards all over again. Not one of those people deserved to die. I will not condone or excuse their barbaric actions–ever. They are a sick bunch.

  11. billg Avatar

Islamic terrorist depravity knows no boundaries. What they do reminds me of the scene in “Apocalypse Now”, where Kurtz (Marlon Brando) talks about ‘the horror’ – a reference to how the Viet Cong would chop off the arms of children inoculated by US Armed Forces. Kurtz’s comment of ‘the horror’ was actually praise in that he recognized the VC were willing to go to any length to break the will of their opponent. He understood that the only way to defeat them was to kill in a similar fashion – without feeling.
Where’s Kurtz when we need him?

  12. Franky Avatar

I didn’t say that we deserved 9/11 as is clear from my post, because while as a government we’ve supported some of the corruptest governments on the planet, what we don’t do is forcible oppresive control of a subject population as the Israelis and Russians do. So again I ask: What they hell do we think they’re going to do?
Yes a kid with an AK-47 going to kill innocent civilians is a terorist, agreed. What’s a kid with an AK-47 against the israeli or Russian army? What were French teenagers who fought the Nazi occupation, often targeting civilians who collabroated with the nazis? What were they, Kat?What would you do if you were a Chechen or a palestinian? How do you feel now regarding people who want to attack you and your country? Yet you reserve for you alone the right to exact revenge or go on the offensive against those targetting you and yours and deny it to Palestinians and Chechens who have lived experiences about one billion times worse than anything you’ve had to bare yet are so angry about.
Unfortunately the world is made up of ethnic and relgious conflicts, because that’s the nature of these socieites: different groups compete for limited resources, and in unstable socieities, that competition becomes violent. That’s why racism exists all over the world. Islam plays such a large role because it has expanded to so many different corners of the world.

  13. Kat Avatar

Answer my question–why is no country free from islamic terrorism?
Why do muslims think they can inhabit a region, and then demand a sharia state? Can I demand a Christian state? Or do I live under the rules of the state like normal people do?
The Palestinians could resolve the problem if they would live with Israel–their goal is a Palestine which includes Israel–and I don’t blame Israel for fighting for its very existence. All the Pals have to do is quit the gut blowing.
Why should Chechnya become an islamic state? Buddhists live there too–they don’t want to live under sharia. Why the hell can’t muslims live with other people without forcing that crap on them? If muslims demand a sharia state in the USA should they get one or they will gut blow all over the place and kidnap babies.
I have zero tolerance for this homicider crap and I have no respect for these animals that target kids. After Russia, I think less of this slime than I did a month ago.

  14. Franky Avatar

    Kat,
I explained the prevalence of islamic conflicts. They live everywhere, and there’s ehtnic conflicts pretty much everywhere. Are there, beyond a couple of fruitcakes in their momma’s basement, people calling for Sharia law in UK? US? There’s no national movement for this in either country.
Muslims don’t always demand sharia law and to buy the Russian line that that’s the reason for the conflict is bullshit. Chechens are getting attacked everyday by a rapacious state. What sort of psychosis you think that provokes? Look at how moderate muslims turned in to jihadists in Bosnia because they suffered the horrors of the civil war.

  15. Kat Avatar

How long before they demand sharia in Britain? They are demanding and getting it in Canada. Now they are marching for a khalifah.

    Franky,
Try a little history that is more than 5 years old. The Chechens are not totally innocent, even before the school terror.
AND ANSWER KAT’S QUESTION. Why the beheaded Nepalese? Why the dead Animists in the Sudan? Why the dead Hindus wherever they can find them? This is NOT about what was done to them. If Russia had been mild as milk they would have attacked anyway, because that’s what they do.
Nationalities/Religions attacked by Islamists this month: Nepalese, Christians, Hindus, Animists, French, and others I’m too angry to look up. You say conflict is everywhere; who else kills EVERYBODY that is not them?

  17. Dick Avatar

    Kat and Franky,
You two have both put forth some excellent points and done in an emotional but civilized way. If we could just get the people in power over these groups to talk as seriously there might be some progress.
The Russian behavior in general has been unbelievably barbaric. The Chechen terrorist response is even worse. Franky is surely right that the Russians have to clean up their act not only for the sake of humanity but also to have any chance of success in gaining some control.
And I would certainly like to see a lot more outrage on the part of Muslim clerics and practitioners about those who use terrorist tactics in the holy name of Allah. What a degradation of such a fine religion the terrorists are committing yet I hear little about it from normal Muslims.
The Palestinian mother who is proud of her son suicide bomber and encourages her second son to do the same is absolute lunacy. And every time a Jewish soldier perpetrates an inhumane act on innocents gives birth to more lunatics.
What is the answer to get these people to tolerate each other as humans?
    Dick

  18. Kat Avatar

The only answer that the muslims seem to want is for we infidels to praise allah–I’d rather eat monkey poo.
“O Prophet! Make war against the unbelievers [all non-Muslims] and the hypocrites and be merciless against them. Their home is hell, an evil refuge indeed.” (Koran, 9:73)
“When you meet the unbelievers in jihad [holy war], chop off their heads. And when you have brought them low, bind your prisoners rigorously. Then set them free or take ransom from them until the war is ended.” (Koran, 47:4)
“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be to be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet and genitals cut off, or to be expelled out of the land. Such will be their humiliation in the world, and in the next world they will face an awful horror.” (Koran, 5:33-34)
“When we decide to destroy a population, we send a definite order to them who have the good things in life and yet sin. So that Allah’s word is proven true against them, then we destroy them utterly.” (Koran, 17:16-17)
“In order that Allah may separate the pure from the impure, put all the impure ones [all non-Muslims] one on top of another in a heap and cast them into hell. They will have been the ones to have lost.” (Koran, 8:37)
“How many were the populations we utterly destroyed because of their sins, setting up in their place other peoples.” (Koran, 21:11)
“Remember Allah inspired the angels: I am with you. Give firmness to the believers. I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: you smite them above their necks and smite all their fingertips off of them.” (Koran, 8:12)

  19. Brett Avatar

Kat, I’m no Kuran expert, so I wanted to check your cited scriptures.
You give 47:4 (“chop off their heads”). Here’s the translation I found:
    http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/047.qmt.html
“So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates.”
Where did you get your translation?

  20. Kat Avatar

I bought a koran after 911–at a store called Coles–I read it, I scanned some ugly parts and saved on my hard drive–then on the first anniversary of 911, I used the book for BBQ ‘wood’ and watched fat from pig spare ribs sizzle on it. I don’t know who the publisher was.
Until 911 I had lived all my life believing I needed to respect people of all religions and non-religions. I had even studied a world religion course in university–but it was such a prettified version of islam. Boy, I was naive!

  21. mary Avatar

Muslims don’t always demand sharia law and to buy the Russian line that that’s the reason for the conflict is bullshit
Where on earth are you getting your information? The Chechens call themselves mujahideen, CBS news calls them muhahideen and they state clearly that Chechen rebels seek independent Muslim state ruled by Sharia law
In a report done on Pakistan’s madrassas, or Jihad factories, the students were very open about their plans:
“In a few moments chatting with them, I quickly learned that their major topic of study was jihad, or holy war. The nearly 2,000 students expect to fight infidels in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Palestine, or Indian Kashmir once they complete their studies at the madrasah, located inside the walls of the old city of Lahore.”
They state that they’re planning to convert the world to Islam. In their own words:
“Like most of his classmates, he will leave the school at about age 18 and go to a military training camp in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, Afghanistan, or some other secret location. After that training, he said, “We go to fight in Kashmir, Chechnya, Palestine, Afghanistan.”
Forcing unwilling populations to live under Shariah law has always been the goal of this international terrorist organization. The Russians say this, the Thai Buddhists who are currently being attacked by Muslim separatists say this, the Americans say it, the Islamists say it. Are they all making it up?

  22. Brett Avatar

I’ve done more checking… I find that it seems to be some Christian sites that quote Quran 47:4 as “strike off their heads,” where most Christian and non-Christian sites tend toward “smite at their necks.”
Most references of the whole verse begin this way: “So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, smite at their necks…”
Not jihad, but in battle (fighting). Nick Berg and Paul Johnson weren’t in battle. From my read and perusal of various interpretations, it doesn’t seem to authorize beheading of non-military folk.
To the contrary, it feels a bit to me like when some fundamentalist Christians lift sections of verse from the bible and do the idiotic with it, such as “they shall take up serpents” in Matthew and the Appalachian snake-dancers who do this silliness – despite the fact that God never authorized this.
Likewise, I think some fundamentalist Islamists interpret 47:4 to mean “behead the infidel.” But in the verse and in the context (surrounding passages), I find no reference to non-military beheading. In fact, it reads a bit like Proverbs. (Do it God’s way and you’ll be blessed; don’t listen to God and you’ll suffer for it.)
Browsing around some more, I also noticed that most suicide bombings tend to be over land disputes (Chechnya, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Palestine-Israel). Outside of these, suicide bombings are more rare. Don’t know what that means, but it seems to be true.
    Also, I like these definitions-
Martyr: Someone who believes that they should die for the cause.
Terrorist: Someone who believes that YOU should die for the cause.

  23. Kat Avatar

Well, of course ALL disputes are over land–how the hell else do you turn states into sharias without killing the people who lived there before the muslims infiltrated–like the Armenian genocide, the Copts in Egypt, the Pandits in Kashmir, Christians in Iran and Turkey–they just disappear after sharia comes. And Arab muslims are superior to Black ones so they’ll just genocide the poor Blacks in Sudan and Nigeria till they are Arab sharia states. And you will excuse them. And blame some Jews or Americans–and the murder goes on. The the Moro Islamic Liberation Front will continue to murder kids in the Phillipines because they demand a sharia state there, too–oh my, all these freaking demands for sharia in other peoples’ lands.

  24. Ricky D Avatar

    Brett –
To them, it is a battle. They killed Nick Berg and Paul Johnson because they were on the front lines of their “war”. It is jihad against the American invaders. It doesn’t matter if they wear a uniform or not. This is part of the problem of perception, and why I’m sympathetic with Kat.
We see this in more of a rational, Western Civ kinda manner of war. To our terrorist buddies, this is simply an all-out cultural war. They’re more black-and-white than our much-reviled president. Once again, not every Muslim falls into this category, but the militant wing of that religion has definitely co-opted it into a global terror and killing machine.
I don’t agree with the snake dancers either, but you know what? They’re not trying to slip a viper into my kid’s bed or anything. Taking a school hostage and murdering hundreds at wanton will like that is just another step down this path of blood and tragedy. It stops cold when we stop them cold.

A comment in general: do not base all your views of Islam terror upon the bible. Remember that the Old and New testaments get very murderous too: But that was many years ago and today only a few nutters would justify madness by the old books. Judge Muslim terror by what is taught, preached and acted upon by those in control And then try this: name any country with a Muslim majority that is a democratic state or that does not treat women as 3rd class or that does not have utter contempt for non-muslims…yes; in countries where they are not iln a majority, they don’t foment much trouble…yet. But keep your eyes on birthrates and immigration, esp. in countries where they can dominate by democrati8c votes: Then, like Hitler: one man, one vote–one time.

  27. Brett Avatar

As you can see, I’m trying to avoid painting all of Islam with the same terrorist brush. Maybe too hard.
Kat, not all the land disputes I mentioned above involve Muslims. The Sri Lanka suicide bombers are Hindu.
Freddie, that’s a good point about majority vs. minority Muslim states.
Ricky, I know that they see this as a battle. What I’m trying to fathom is: is Islam itself the problem? Or is it the nutjobs who preach this stuff out of context and incite their followers to do these horrible things?
I live in Iowa. We have a local talk show host who has done a lot of digging on the topic on Islam and he has talked with some local Muslim leaders. Of course, they say that these things have nothing to do with the teachings of the Koran. But the talk show host brought a lot of history to it and wondered if the local leaders weren’t changing Islam’s interpretation to fit our democratic society. I didn’t hear his conclusion on the matter, but it has remained a question for me.

  28. Kat Avatar

Brett-I also read everything I could get my hands on. I read some stuff written by Ayatollah Khomeini–it is just sick.
    Example:
“A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate; sodomising the child is OK. If the man penetrates and damages the child then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl, however, does not count as one of his four permanent wives. The man will not be eligible to marry the girl’s sister. ”
Then he goes on desribing how a muslim can have sex with animals, and he puts me in the category of a sweaty shit eating camel–
    things which are impure:
urine,excrement,sperm,etc….non-Moslem men and women…and the sweat of an excrement-eating camel.” This is stark raving lunacy and no one questions this crap over there. He is considered Islam’s most famous spokesman and revered.
I don’t know how moderate muslims interpret the Koran–I just hope and pray that it is not literally. Islam needs a reformation and fast….a religion of peace it is not,and peace at their price is dhimmization.

North Korea developed nuclear weapons, and now

    with our government.
It would seem, then, that the criteria for an
islamic victory would be simply to accqure WMD
before we have a chance to invade.
The criteria for our victory, on the other hand,
is basically the death of all muslims or their
    conversion to christianity.
At least that is what I gather from your posts.

Chechnya is a mess, and the mess goes beyond the Russian mass rapes/slaughter of 200,000 Chechens in the 1st or 2nd war.
Chechnya did gain autonomy and had it for a few years before the invasion of Daegestan in 99. The aforementioned mass rapes/murders of Chechens may have happened before 99 or afterwards; I simply don’t know.
Maybe they should wall off Chechnya from the rest of the world, or at least the rest of Russia.

  34. Cooper Avatar

Meezer – what you are advocating basically involves hideous torture of other human beings on a massive scale – I’d say that was pretty sick yes.
The point that you armchair generals seem to forget is that this atrocity happened despite hard as nails tactics on the side of the Russians. Do you think Northern Ireland would be in relative peace now if the UK had followed the “Russian Model”?
The lesson being – raping, torturing and brutalising people is not necessarily the best way of winning the “war on terror”

  35. Ricky D Avatar

    Brett –
Tough call, man. The history of the religion is wracked with violence…but the same goes for Judeo/Christian folks too, though an argument can be raised on whether or not that was biblically justifiable, ever should’ve happened, etc.
Back when everyone was colonizing and making empires, Arabs and Muslims generally factored heavily into that mix. Time moved on…and as a whole, they didn’t. I certainly don’t want to say all Muslims are bad, cause even I know some fantastic and smart people. That can’t be and is not true. At least I sure hope not.
You might have to look at it like this — the menacing nutjobs may be the real problem, but their religion is also a perfect conduit for their actions. Jihad is a slippery slope of justification, and we just lube the hill by not calling apples apples.
I absolutely believe we can all co-exist, but not before we make sure that Muslim terrorists in general know that 1) there are no more crusades coming, so 2) leave us alone. I assume that comes by large but fair shows of force. I personally am not one willing to back down at a show of force. Work a political or baby boom jihad, if they will, but all of this murderous insanity is like time-warping 8th-century savagery into 2004 (or 2001, etc.)
To answer your question the best my feeble mind can…
We know the out-of-context imams are some of the most rotten apples of all. We’re pretty sure Islam isn’t. Why not start taking out what we know is bad? We’ll find out soon enough where the attitudes and feelings of the people generally lie. If it turns out Islam is the problem…well, let’s just say that would be a no-good situation. I don’t think that’d be the case, though.
This is why I don’t envy the foreign-policy folks in the Bush administration.

  36. Kat Avatar

America’s job,and the world’s, is to utterly destroy

  37. Brett Avatar

Ricky, I’m with you on the “religion wracked with violence” thing.
Freedom of speech and literacy seem to have a great impact on behavior, as hinted in the article Jeff mentioned.
“[Criticism of Islamic society] is a judgement rarely voiced in heavily censored Arab rhetoric.”
Remove the censorship, presumably by religious authorities, and these criticisms might help to cure the violence by giving non-violence a voice. Democracies don’t want war. The vision of democracy in the mideast is incredible for what it might do. Women’s rights, freedom of speech…
I can’t think of a democracy that didn’t start out violently and with several missteps. The conflict is necessary, but there is no better way to ensure a safer future.

  38. Meezer Avatar

This is not the first time that Islam has wanted to take over the world. For a time they managed pretty well, with a huge empire. Then the West moved on into the future, they didn’t, and for a long time were totally inconsequential from a taking-over-the-world standpoint. Then havoc became portable and cheap, and suddenly Islam didn’t need armies and storehouses of treasure. As soon as it was physically posible, the dream of the caliphate revived. There really IS more of a problem here than a few oppressed people acting out the only way they can. The 19 were neither oppressed, poor, nor un-educated. They wanted to kill us anyway.
