More from Blogging of the President
: A Republican strategist, Max Fose, says there will be an 800 pound gorilla on the Internet and “that will be George Bush and his Internet campaign.” Why? Email addresses. They still belong in the direct mail church.

He talks about letter and talk-show campaigns through this “avenue to activism.” Josh calls him on it: “That’s very top-down.”

A caller, Elvira asks the question of the night: What the hell does “blog” mean?

And Josh gets a fan call.

I liked the woman who said that when she goes to Atrios, it’s like she’s with her friends. That’s nice.

Saying that the GOP is going to use the internet (blogs) to PUSH their message misses the point — you’re talking right now about how it should be a two-way street. It hasn’t really happened yet, but the internet community (i.e. citizens) will have a means of real-time two-way communication.

Jeff, you sound great, talk more about your phone. :)

If the Republicans can get people to vote for Bush by sending them email, why would they care if it is “very top down”? Why is that important?
Besides, blogs are not really “bottom up”, in the sense that they’re the voice of the people speaking to the government. They seem more “side to side”, like a conversation in a bar.

    Bilg is right.
Blogs are horizontal communication, not vertical.

Twill be most amusing whem GW finds that his election website and email servers can only be located in China, S.Korea, and Brazil due to the anti-spamming community spanking him hard over the fact that his mailing list is not confirmed opt-in.

“Top-down” is a stupid, trendy, meaningless phrase. Max Fose pioneered the intersection of Web and politics, so Josh needs to be extremely careful about using a stupid catchphrase to criticize him. It just looks silly.
