You’re doing a great job, dude. No surprise, obviously … but a welcome jolt of caffeine into the conversation.

    Yes, excellent. Surprisingly good.
Too bad Lydon chose to go “it’s gonna change the world” on the explanation of the word blog, instead of just saying that it’s short for ‘weblog’.

  3. Tinker Avatar

I have just heard of blogging on NPR. This sounds excellent. Is the blog largely political?

  4. Jay Avatar

    Jeff, you own this show!
I’ve never heard Chris Lydon, but I must say he’s not a very good host. He’s trying to control the direction of the show and prod his guests only in the direction he wants them to go, and has abruptly cut off several guests and callers apparently because he just thinks it’s time to move on to his next predetermined topic.

Glad that Layne’s Maxim made it into the conversation so early, because that’s the core of this thing.

Andrew and Atrios are really trying to slam each other.
I think Atrios is winning right now.

“co-opt” them. Brillant and honest analysis. Good job! I look forward to becoming a new reader of your blog!

Jedi, I think Sully got in a few stabs too.

  9. Jediflyer Avatar

He did, but he ended up coming off too agressive.
I only caught the last half hour or so, but I thought Jeff was great.

Atrios had no answer of any kind on the pseudonymity issue. And, he couldn’t name a single time when he’d criticized someone on the left.

  11. Jediflyer Avatar

I give you the fact that he couldn’t name any time he criticized the left but on the other issues, I think Atrios won.
On pseudonymity, it doesn’t matter. As long as you keep the same name, your accountable to people. We can track what Atrios says and attribute it to him.
Andrew Sullivan, on the other hand, is not accountable in the same way Atrios is. Sullivan does not have a comments section on his blog. Yes, you can e-mail him, but that is not the same. I think Mr. Jarvis would back me up here.
When it comes to accountability, Atrios meets the standard. Just because you don’t know his street address and telephone number doesn’t mean he is unaccountable.
Disclaimer: I don’t agree with most of what Atrios says, but I think he is perfectly right to say it and most of Sullivan’s attacks were unwarrented.

  12. Eric Deamer Avatar

Atrios makes personal ad hominem attacks based on information that is only available to him by virtue of the fact that others are willing to make their real name and the real details of their lives public. If he confined himself to a discussion of issues it would be one thing, but he doesn’t.
And another thing that neither he nor you have addressed is the issue of transparency. For all we know Atrios is a right-winger trying to make lefties look bad (the most likely scenario given the quality of his blog) or a 12-year-old (the second most likely scenario given the quality of his blog), or a convicted rapist, or who knows what. He is, indeed, accountable in the sense that he maintains a consistent internet identity which is accountable, but there is no transparency with regard to his motives and background, as there is with Sullivan.

  13. Jediflyer Avatar

Sullivan also writes for major news and opinion magazines and does his work as a living.
Atrios does his blog on the side while he maintains another job.
And I agree with you, Eric, that his blog is not a place you want to go if you want an orderly discussion, but I think it bears mentioning that Sullivan and Atrios have blogs for different purposes and that we should not forget that fact.

    >If he confined himself to a discussion of issues it would be one thing, but he doesn’t.
Atrios doesn’t discuss anything. He, like Instapundit, are running blogs that have become nothing more than link pages. Seriously, the pair of them run cut and paste blogs and amount to nothing more than ideology traffic cops directing people to blogposts, op-eds and news articles that are in line with their respective leanings.

  15. anne.elk Avatar

Atrios is much more accountable than either instapundit or sullivan.
It astonished me that as you folks COMMENT here, you still can’t figure out why Atrios has much much more class than either instapundit or sullivan.
Both Reynolds and Sullivan are chicken.
Jeff is usually a mean, nasty, sour, S*B who thinks he has a heart of gold but he’s got far more guts than Reynolds or Sullivan.
That said, while Reynolds is mainly just a traffic cop, Atrios has a very keen, very insightful eye and has often been able to add analysis and occam’s razor to tear to the heart of an issue. He’s far more than just a traffic cop.
Dreamer, you’ve got to be kidding if you think Atrios is a disinformation campaign to make lefties look bad. Atrios isn’t even particularly left, he is particularly smart.

“And while we’re all loving each other tonight, even in atrios’ comments, there are a vicious few, dull witted individuals, that do attack others, smear, and attack, for no real reason other than the good old dick fight.”
    Interesting point!

I think you need to take a good look at his blog. Very little of what is posted are Atrios’s own words. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not making a judgement that this is either a good or a bad thing. I’m just saying that these two bloggers are actually providing very little opinion of their own.

Check out the 11:12pm post by LK, and compare it to Eric Deamer here at 11:45pm. Seems that Eric Deamer has a problem posting original thoughts.
“Who is to say Atrios isn’t, say, G. Gordon Liddy, or Margaret Thatcher? Or perhaps he is a 12-year-old (based on the asinine ad-hominem nature of his comments I’d say that is most likely–and how is that for ad hominem?) Perhaps he is a righty who has determined to make a name for himself pretending to look like a lefty so he can give lefties the reputation of being 12-year-olds.”
    Typical Eric, typical.

  19. anne.elk Avatar

Robert I hear what you’re saying, and there is some truth to it, but it’s not the complete story. I’ve been reading Atrios for about a year now, and while he is certainly not reporting new stories the way Josh Marshall does, Atrios often gives us a very interesting, and new analysis of an issue, and correlates it with similar incidents from the past.
I find he brings far more to this than just a traffic cop. YMMV.

Anne, I was truly inspired by your tale of Roger Simon’s injustice. Fight the power!

  21. anne.elk Avatar

Angus Jung, no injustice really, it is Roger’s blog. No injustice — either ignorance, over sensitivity, or hypocrisy — I don’t know which.

ROTFL. And anne-elk sure seems to love hanging out in Jarvis’ comments for all that he’s a “mean, nasty, sour, S*B.” I think anne has Issues.
