Stopping Dean
: Andrew Sullivan wrote his longer view of what stopped the Howard Dean train in Iowa for the Sunday Times.
The short version: Al Gore, political jinx.

Build up, tear down, standard punditry.
Despite being a doctor, Dean isn’t God. The press bought into the hype, then looks around for how the hype was wrong.
Yeah. If he does well in Iowa, I suspect Edwards is the next under the gun.
The HIV-positive, gay conservative immigrant who fancies himself a shaper of public opinion calls the man who was 1st in his class at West Point, a Rhodes scholar, 34-year military leader, 4-star general and commander of NATO a “wacko”. How interesting. Not much of a contribution to the public dialogue, but interesting.
Only in America, I suppose.
Andy writes:
“I want to do more to improve homeland security, put more emphasis on securing loose nukes in Russia and around the world, stay the course on Iraq – but also move to mend fences with old Europe and our other allies. Domestically, I’m going to improve our finances by raising taxes on the very rich, but cutting taxes on the middle class. And, above all, I’ll be a check on one-party government in the Congress, and prevent Bush from appointing extremists to the Supreme Court.” That’s a powerful message.
Pretty much sums up the message of the general Andy likes to call the “wacko”. Weird.
Well, I think his wacko comments are based on Clark almost starting a fight with the Russians in Kosovo (literally), when they hurried to seize an airport, Clark apparently wanted British troops to take it from them forcefully, and the Brit commander refused. Which I believe is what probably led to him being fired. And no one in the military seems to like the guy.
Furthermore, he’s made bizzare statements, that if he were president, no terrorist attacks against the US would ever happen. And that he would have caught Osama by now. And he also appears to have a temper like Dean.
It’s funny, lefties sure like to make a big deal out of Andrew Sullivan’s sex life…
Yeah, Jeremy. Don’t you just love the way he tagged Sullivan as an ‘immigrant’ (a GAY CONSERVATIVE immigrant, no less!) and then contrasted that with our all-American Wesley, thereby suggesting something vaguely illegitimate about not being native-born? Because that’s the only thing I can take away from the contrasting sets of adjectives prefacing Sullivan’s and Clark’s names respectively. How interesting that he chose THOSE terms to use as a comparison…so being gay, conservative, an immigrant, HIV-positive, or a pundit lessens you in stature?
Who says the spirit of tolerance is dead?
