Hey, HTML geniuses

Hey, HTML geniuses
: My brain is too small to figure this out. One of you surely can: When I published the post below about Greg Easterbrook, the column rule between the blog guts and my right rail disappeared. This happens sometimes. And I can’t figure out why. There’s nothing unusual that I can find in the post. But when I take the post out, the rule re-appears. Can you find what’s doing this? Comments and eurekas welcomed.

Hmm… It took me a second to figure out what you meant because your page looks fine in Mozilla’s Firebird – not sure it’s exclusive to IE or not. Odd. Sorry I can’t offer more (any?) help.

Yeah, we need a couple of key pieces of information to debug this… what browser/OS are you on? And does the column rule come back if you highlight the text on the page?

The problem (in IE, at least) is caused by having BLOCKQUOTE tags inside of BLOCKQUOTE tags. The multiple level of indentation affects the right margin.
You can solve the problem by adding
    blockquote{margin-right:0px;}
inside the STYLE tag in your template.

ADDENDUM: There may be something beyond the nested BLOCKQUOTE tags affecting it, but the solution I posted seems to work in any case.

    Jeff,
You’re creating the “rail” effect using a nested table with cellspacing. You can eliminate any text problems from ever interfering with your “rails” by eliminating the nested table and using the following for your main table:
This gives you an almost identical effect

Hmm. Your software is sensitive to html coding, so it didn’t post it. How’s this:
    ……..

Never mind. I’m emailing it to you. Sheesh.

Among other things you have an extraneous closing anchor tag (/a) at the end of the post. It looks like you have other nesting problems as well. Nested tags are like nested boxes. You have to close them in reverse order to the way you opened them.

I’m not a real HTML guru but I found out WHAT’s doing it. The blockquote tag followed by the italics tag at the beginning is what’s doing it. Erase the italics tag and the rail border shows up. Put it back and it goes away. Now WHY it’s doing it, I can’t tell you. I tried everything I know but those two tags together just don’t mix. Good luck.

RIVLAX IS A GENIUS. Accidental, perhaps, but a genius. I changed the ital to a bold tag and it worked! Go figger! Now who’s the genius who can explain why? (Merely intellectual curiousity.)

Hey, I’m no genius but it certainly wasn’t accidental. I simply systematically killed out lines of the post that had html markup, bracketing from top to bottom, until the rail border appeared. Then I isolated each tag on the offending line until I found that the ital tag was the offender. This is a skill I learned when I was a teletype technician in the Air Force. We were taught to isolate one variable at a time until we found the problem. No accident, man. Just good troubleshooting.

Oh gawd yes, isolate your variables. I remember twentysome years ago when what might have been a major breakthhru in dragster design went noplace because Big Daddy Garlits tried both the changes he was considering in a single car, didn’t, as far as I can tell, notice that he also changed the car’s polar moment, and abandoned both projects as worthless.
