My wife reports that our suburb is very quiet today. The construction workers are gone. There’s not a lawn being tended. The checkout lanes in the supermarket were understaffed and overcrowded. Guess it’s working.

actually, jeff, i think it’s all due to loyalty day. americans are banding together with their exploited semi-permanent neighbors to make george bush proud.

Wow. Sounds like the world is coming to an end.

We even saw it in the German news…will it make a difference to you, your life and do you agree with Mr. Bushs`point?! Just curious…

It seems to have made not one whit of difference here in Phoenix. The lawn crews were out at their normal time. Service at the McDonald’s by my office was as prompt as usual. Only difference I noticed was traffic was a bit lighter going to downtown than it usually is at 5am. Maybe my situation is unique, and I’m just not shopping in the right stores, going to the right places, whatever.

I think the power of suggestion has invaded your wife’s head.
I was at one of my favorite Italian places for lunch, the place was a ghost town! It is usually quite busy during lunch hours… but this day it was just the people that I came with and a few other patrons.
This day that I am reffering to?… Last Thursday. April 27th. They have their slow days like any other business.
Last week was ‘TV Tune out’ week. Had it been hyped as much as this Hispanic protest, your wife may have shaped her opinions about conversations that she heard recently. “Come to think of it, No one is really talking about TV shows this week–I guess people are actually tuning out.”– because that is the conclusion she already has in her head.
Your wife’s observations are hardly conclusive data. But advertisers must love her. “I *do* need one of those! I don’t know how I ever lived without one!”

I heard wicked tales of free flowing freeways and easy commutes in the Los Angeles area. Maybe everyone was actually off the road. People also said they would pay more for products and services, as long as it included less congestion on a regular basis.

The only place I noticed any effect of this ridiculous “Day Without Immigrants” was on the news. Channels like CNN would not stop their live updates from the protests, even though they only place they were having a (minimal) effect was in LA and Chicago. My daily life went on completely unaffected.
Personally, I think any one in this country illegally has no right to call for our government to make laws to help them. Want the rights of an American? Then become an American citizen they way millions of other people have.

KB says:
“Want the rights of an American? Then become an American citizen they way millions of other people have.”
You mean kill indigenous people, take their land, and deny them their right to practice their own religion?
KB, you must be Native American to have made such a comment. In which case, I’m sorry for us all Europeans for invading your land.
