Bizarro Bernie

Yesterday, I taped Donny Deutsch’s show with Bernie Goldberg about his book, 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (earlier post here). It’s going to be on CNBC tonight at 10:30p and you have to watch, for you will see a bizarre performance that continued after the cameras went off.

Bernie went bonkers.

Or Bernie is bonkers.

We report. You decide.

The show started with Bernie snarling at Donny for no good reason. Then, in the second segment, Donny came to NY Post TV critic Linda Stasi, who was prepared to discuss Bernie’s silly list (giving it more dignity than I would have have). With good humor and energy, she asked why Rush Limbaugh wasn’t on it.

Well, that set Bernie off. And downhill we went. Bernie shouted to Linda to shut up. He got downright mean. Linda and I were in the same studio (though we were on different cameras) and we looked at each other to confirm that we weren’t nuts; this was. Bernie growled about how he can’t stand being on “panel show.” It got so bad that Donny had to scold Bernie for his behavior.

Later, Bernie insisted that he wasn’t a “church lady” (after Donny and I defended one of the names on his list, Howard Stern) but then he went on about people talking about “humping” on TV. When I said he did indeed sound like a church lady, he came back and said less-than-polite things about whom I hump. I said that’s a fine way for him to talk.

You get the flavor.

And then the madness continued.

Bernie called a producer at CNBC and reduced her to tears.

He called media outlets — starting with the, cough, sympathetic Washington Times — arguing that he was ambushed.

He called Fox — where, according to one of the other guests, he has already appeared eight times to promote his book — to whine and get on Bill O’Reilly’s show.

One theory is that this is all a publicity ploy. Another is that he’s acting wacky. I think it’s a combination of the two: This is the behavior of a paranoid who needs enemies to keep his paranoid rantings — and publicity — alive. Bernie wanted to be ambushed. He made it into an ambush. And the strategy is working. The book’s selling (at time of taping it was No. 3 on Amazon behind only Harry Potter; now it’s No. 6). Except we on the show didn’t buy the book. And that really pissed him off.

Here’s what appeared in The Washington Times:

“I’ve been doing this a long, long time, and I have never, ever, ever, never — I could say never and ever 10 more times — experienced what I just went through,” Mr. Goldberg told Inside the Beltway late yesterday after he taped the show, which is to air tonight, from Miami.
“Deutsch disagreed with everything, and that is just fine,” said Mr. Goldberg, the best-selling author of “Bias” who has written the new book “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (And Al Franken is No. 37).”
“But then, unbeknownst to me, they brought on a panel of five, plus Donny, all of whom took the other side. And it’s not like they just respectfully disagreed; there was name-calling, ganging up; it was unbelievable. And not one of them even read the book. They admitted it.
“It was more than an ambush,” he said. “It was the most cynical, dishonest thing I have ever been lassoed into. They misled me.”
Immediately after the taping, Mr. Goldberg said, he told the show’s producer, Marilyn Cutler, that Mr. Deutsch had been “dishonest.”

And the spin continues. Someone masquerading as an “informed source” contacts the CaptainsQuarters with more whining:

However, instead of debating cultural issues as the producers had explained the segment to Goldberg, it turned out that the show had stacked the panel with people who disliked Goldberg’s book — and ganged up on him to belittle it.

The show issued a statement in response:

Mr. Goldberg was invited on our program to discuss his new book. We asked him if he would be willing to stay and join a panel of print and online journalists to discuss the people and issues he raised in the book and he agreed. At certain points during the segment, Mr. Goldberg, the panelists and Donny did not always agree. We felt that it was a healthy and robust conversation.

We treat all of guests, including Mr. Goldberg, with nothing but the utmost respect and courtesy. We encourage people to tune into CNBC tonight at 10:30PM and watch for themselves.

: Now here are a few quotes from the show. I don’t have a full transcript yet. This quote from me comes after he attacked Stasi and Barbara Walters before that, after the heat was already on high.

You know, Bernie, you put yourself up on a high pedestal here as if you’re above journalism. But you know what? You’re just using the oldest trick I know–and I did it myself–in: ‘Let’s come up with a meaningless list and then a meaningless debate about.’ [That’s] almost certainly what’s happening right now.

Let’s start with the premise. America’s not screwed up. Let’s start there. America is a good place. It’s a wonderful place….

And to say, `Well, I’ve got the list, and I have in my hand a list with names.’ It’s a ridiculous unjournalism, unnews exercise, and you make fun of Barbara Walters and others for blurring the line between news. This isn’t news. This isn’t journalism. It’s a way to get promotion you’re getting right now and then complaining about. It’s really pretty hard to take, Bernie.

: And now a sample of the exchange between Bernie and Linda:

Ms. STASI: Well, I just think it’s incredible that he writes a section on vicious celebrities and he’s being so vicious. And we’re just sitting here discussing it. You don’t have to tell me to shut up, you know. It’s just–I mean, don’t you find that vulgar if you’re yelling at somebody to shut up on television? Because I find that really vulgar.

DEUTSCH: I couldn’t agree more.

Unidentified Guest: Yeah. Yeah, I don’t understand how you could like…

DEUTSCH: Wait, let him respond to that.

Mr. GOLDBERG: No, I only did it because you don’t shut up.

Unidentified Guest: I don’t understand…

Mr. STASI: You know what? You see what I mean. It’s so ignorant.

Unidentified Guest: …how do you tell a woman to shut up?

Ms. STASI: It’s ignorant.

Unidentified Guest: A woman, tell her to shut up? I mean, come on.

Ms. STASI: It’s just ignorant. It’s just ignorant.

DEUTSCH: What signal is that? You’re talking about cultural wars? To any young girl watching out there, you tell a woman to shut up?

Ms. STASI: It doesn’t matter if I’m a woman or not, what he says…

Mr. GOLDBERG: Donny!

DEUTSCH: It does matter.

Ms. STASI: …is just silly.

Mr. GOLDBERG: Donny, Donny, that’s interesting.

Ms. STASI: It’s vulgar and silly.

Goldberg may have overreacted, but this “does” smell like a classic ambush. When’s the last time Michael Moore, Al Franken, or Kitty Kelley was confronted with a uniformly hostile panel on a major network, esp on short notice? Nixon comprising an “Enemies List” may have been in poor taste, but let no one doubt that those enemies DID exist. Petty? Yes. Paranoid? Hell no.

I won’t defend Goldberg or his book. He could be a jerk for all I know. But I still think it odd that a panel is paid to “discuss” a book on national tv and NONE of them have read it!. And then they act superior that the author is upset by this!

I saw Goldberg on The Daily Show and he was reasoned and articulate. Stuart mugged to the audience with cheap but funny lines guaranteed to shut Goldberg down while not dealing with the substance of Goldberg’s points.
I thought Lileks had a good response to Jeff Jarvis’ comments.
I am unsure why you included this particular piece of transcription to illustrate your general points because if this is what you use as evidence of him being off kilter it isn’t much. He says two things. He seems crowded out. He has only two brief sentences.
What the hell kind of sexist argument is it that you can’t tell a female blowhard to shut up if they are hogging the conversation – especially if they are discussing a book they haven’t read? He isn’t arguing in his book that we should treat women like fragile flowers in political shouting matches – he is saying we should’t call them bitches who’s main quality is to give blowjobs to winners of trivia contests (i.e. multiple Stern shows, rap songs etc.)

What is annoying – and must be extremely annoying for Goldberg is that from the transcriptions you posted and the Daily Show interview I saw he isn’t allowed to actually debate any of the theses of his book. First – the title of his book doesn’t say that America is screwed up – it says that here are people screwing America up. They have not succeeded. He makes arguments about how what they are doing is harmful. This woman’s point is a cheap and distracting shot. Secondly – the fact that Rush Limbaugh is not included doesn’t invalidate anything. It is another distraction. If Rush Limbaugh is screwing up America (which would contradict her first point about America not being screwed up) it has nothing to say about the arguments that Goldberg is making. I bet Goldberg gets a lot of this. It must frustrate him.

  12. Richard Bennett Avatar

Goldberg showed a lot of restraint. If you get an author on a TV show with three or four hostile and ignorant people who haven’t read his book and they all say it’s crap and won’t let him speak, I think he should be entitled under the law to kick their asses, regardless of sex, race, creed, national orgin, or sexual orientation.

Jeff, since you linked to the post on Captain’s Quarters, what do you think about the claim made in an update to that post, and in his own blog by Dave Johnson, who walked off Deutch’s show after he claimed he was sandbagged into becoming the lone defender of a video game being criticized for being too violent.
I haven’t seen the Goldberg segment yet, so I can’t comment on whether or not he was out of control, but Johnson’s complaint coming on top of his seems to show that at the very least, Donnie and his producer have come up with the idea of “gang tackling” a single guest when they are expousing a controversial viewpoint, be it a broad-brush attack on liberals or a defense of video games for adults. Stage that kind of “gotcha” segment enough, and Deutch’s show will simply become an echo chamber for people who’s political and societal views are similar to Donnie’s, which is pretty much what helped kill some of CNBC/MSNBC’s other shows, like Charles Grodin and Phil Donahue.

What was the point of having so many people to combat one guy and his book? Shouldn’t he have had at least ONE guy in his corner? As far as I was concerned, the large number of people on the panel ultimately crowded the discussion. They were all vying for time to berate Goldberg and talking over him and each other. That was bad, disorganized and unprofessional television. All on the panel, including that so-called host should be ashamed.

  30. andy Avatar

I just saw that segment. Absolutely pathetic. Jeff should be embarassed that he was a part of that.

  31. HT Avatar

I don’t normally watch CNBC, but I happened to catch two brief segments of this program when flipping channels a few minutes ago. And to tell you the truth, I stopped both times hoping to see and hear Jeff Jarvis. No such luck, however. Anyway, the first snippet was just Goldberg with Donny Deutsch, and the second was, coincidentally, the free-for-all described above.
In my humble opinion, Goldberg was much more sinned against than sinning, although he did have something of a sour expression on his face for most of the time. Although I don’t know him well; that may just be the way he looks. He was not unpleasant, but he definitely couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Ms. Stasi, by contrast, was quite annoying; she was smug, smirking, superior, and interrupted constantly. Heck, I have trouble tolerating that when my wife does it…
I also noticed an interesting logical contradiction that Mr. Deutsch perpetrated but seemed unaware of. When defending Barbara Walters, he argued that doing something was OK if enough people wanted to watch it, and it was wrong to try and forbid it. He also interrupted and talked over Mr. Goldberg on several occasions to interfere with Goldberg’s quite rational response that he wasn’t saying that she should be actively prevented from doing it, just that she was helping dumb down the culture in that regard (my paraphrase). For the record, the subject at that point was the blurring of the lines between news and entertainment. Yet Mr. Deutsch then ended the show with a bitter attack on the book in question, arguing that the fact that it was number 3 on the bestseller list was “scary”. Logically, however, this makes no sense. If Barbara’s activities are OK because enough people want them (Donny’s earlier point), why wouldn’t the book qualify as OK under an equal application of the same standard?
And I say this as someone who has no horse in this race. I am neither a fan nor an apologist for Mr. Goldberg. Wouldn’t read his book (don’t much like popular literature), and agree that he probably made up his list to play to an element of popular culture that would be most likely to drive readership among the ignoscenti. But for heaven’s sake, let the man talk, and don’t smirk at him and accuse him of being mean just because of the way his face looks or that someone managed to goad him into yelling “shut up” during the course of a one-sided debate.
P.S. In the segment you quoted, I see Ms. Stasi as having 99 words total. Mr. Goldberg is credited with 15. Take that for what it’s worth.

This is a classic example of why T.V. is so pathetic and that publicity is more important then content. DD will get a bump in the ratings and Goldberg will get more for his book. I am not fond of list books and they are usually a waste of time. But if someone is going to critque a book at least someone on the panel should have read it. Doesn’t that make sense. “Lets get a panel together and discuss a book that no one has read.”
Having 5 to 7 people trying to discuss anything in a 15 minute segment sounds more like my Irish Catholic dinner table then a serious show. But I guess if it worked for Jerry Springer then it will work for DD.
I have no pity for Goldberg. This will pay off for him. It does sound like a gang bang. I won’t buy the book because I do not like the genre but I can’t say anything is terrible if I have not read the arguments. I saw Goldberg on Stewart and Stewart wouldn’t let him complete a thought but that is how Stewart deals with people he doesn’t like and Goldberg should have known that so I don’t feel sorry for him.

Wolcott is entirely too ineffectual to belong among the “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America.” You are right of course: America isn’t screwed up, though Goldberg wasn’t saying it was. (Maybe if you had read his book, you would have picked up that.)
Part of why we are not screwed up is that we don’t listen to mice-turd for brains like Wolcott. He equates the loss of nearly 3000 lives with the loss of ~55 and wonders why the world didn’t react exactly the same today as it did then???? And you defended this putz? Howard is what he is – a smart man with some interesting thoughts on some important issues who plays a fifty-something-year-old junior high school kid who loves to see how far he can push it, how much he can shock us.
And this, in the end, is Howard Stern’s most significant, lasting, and saddest legacy: that the king of all “shock” jocks no longer shocks us. Not even a little. We’ve become used to all of it – the fart jokes, the humiliation of easy targets, the all-sex-all-the-time humor…it simply washes over us, like sludge in a polluted river – just part of our daily environment.

Sounds like a perfectly good reason to put him on the list. Accurate, too. And even if you don’t agree, you’d have been in a much better position to argue the point IF YOU’D READ THE BOOK.

Hey, Jeff! I am having trouble getting anyone to come on my show tomorrow and criticise a book. I haven’t had time to read it. To tell you the truth, I can’t remember the title or author.
Do you think we could set up a telephone link and you could do it for me? Or do you have to be on TV to do that sort of thing?

  53. Mark Avatar

    Mr. Jarvis,
In my opinion you actually made a fool of yourself on Mr. Deutsch’s show tonight. If it wasn’t bad enough to do a four on one tag team against Mr. Goldberg, your most relevant comment showed a lack of understanding and more importantly a shaky grasp of the English language. Mr. Goldberg’s book is entitled, “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America”, and your point was to attempt to deconstruct his book by attacking a false premise. You said that, “America isn’t screwed up”, but “screwed up” is a state of being. Mr. Goldberg’s title does not assert that America is screwed up, only that through some people’s actions it is becoming screwed up. These are two very different things. As if this wasn’t enough, the fact that you hadn’t even taken the time to actually refute his book on its merits by taking the time to do your research is pathetic. I know you are simply a blogger, but when going on national television please do us all a favor and don’t be so lazy next time.
    Thanks

This was a total set-up by Deutsch and Jarvis you bought into it. Golberg was not treated with respect since none of you knew anything about the premis of his book, you were simply reacting to preconceived ideas. And by the way, he never told anyone to shut-up. The whole “panel discussion” was ridiculous!! Jarvis, you were a BIG disappointment.

Oh my God, you guys. Me and my friends were on TV to review a book by Bernie Bonkers (ewww gross). Or Bonkers Bernie!!!!!!!! Either one, right? You decide!!!!! LOL.
He was all “America sucks” or something. I don’t know. I didn’t even read the book. I’m so bad. Too funny!!!! ROFL.
Nobody else read it either. He was so pissed. LOL. But, like, who’d read that ugly jerk’s book? He’s such a dorky whiner anyway.
I was like, Bernie, you think ur all that, but ur not. And he’s like “blah blah let me finish.” And then Stasi goes, “Ur a big fat ignorant waffleface, ya stupid meanie.” And some unidentified kid is all, “Did you just tell her to shut up?” And Bernie just sat there like a fat dork and got all mad. And we’re all like, Take that chubby nuts! Whoooooo!!!!!!!!!! Democrats Rule and Rate!!!! YEA!!!!!!!
It was sooooo funny. Then he yelled at some poor girl who like works on the show and made her cry. Seriously, what a psycho. Can you believe some people?
Then he’s like calling his friends and going all “They were mean to me, Waaaaaaaaah!!!” Like, get a clue, doofus. ROFL. Whatever. He so deserves it.
Oh my God. He seriously goes running to his friends like ALL THE TIME. And he like almost never hangs out with us normal people. Can you say biased? Whatever, I hate his guts. Yea!!!!
So, next issue. Bratz Toyko a Go-Go. Too much eye make-up and lip collagen for today’s 8 and over crowd or not enough? I’ve never seen one yet, but my friends say it’s soooooo cool. I want like ten million of them.

    Jeff,
    just finished watching the show.
first of all, who are these people who are making you responsible for the imbalance of panel members? since when does a guest control those things?
secondly, since when does every panel member and every host read every book from every author that traipses through their studio?
third, this is a list book. the point of a interview is to ask the author questions that the audience would ask if they had the chance. and all you have to do is look at the list to be able to ask relevant questions like “how come Rush and Bill O’Reilly are absent from the book but yet Al Franken and Michael Moore are in there?”
i blame Deutsch and his producers for stacking the deck against him. certainly not you. perhaps id have invited one media critic and one person who’s actually on the list.
with that said, i liked Bernie’s stance about Linda not shutting up, but only because it was entertaining. Bernie knew he had about 8-9 minutes to speak and she asked two minutes worth of questions on her opening salvo. he wanted to be a macho righteous dude and he stuck to his guns. maybe next time she will keep her questions short. its tv, times money.
he didnt, however, answer any of the questions very well, and boxing Donny into the left-wing box was silly because it distracted things away from the debate about the book. who cares who Donny votes for? tell us why Rush and O’Reilly are off the list especially since both of those entertainers reach far more people than Al Franken, and especially since Rush was one of the few who supported the actions at abu ghraib by saying that they were simply blowing off steam.
anyway, the two words that you got in there were fine. but i disagree with the notion that bro flew off the handle.

The pilloring of Mr. Goldberg in the interview and the Pilloring of Mr. Jarvis in this post over a single incident is a bit overboard.
I’m not inclined to change my opinion of either of you over one show or one posting.
Only you can be the judge of your impression of Mr. Goldberg your readers might disagree but your impression is yours and yours alone.
The comments indicate that your readers are tilting right, this suggests that my previous comments concerning the left and orthodoxy are not far off.

But I do hope that as a follow-up you will post the entire show transcript (with permission, of course) to enlighten us on the context of your “shut up” excerpt. To make your point about “Bizarro Bernie”, you pulled the most provocative clip, the one most irrelevant to the purported reason for DD’s show, and included none of the verbatim material setting up his “wacky” response. Perhaps some might think his response was appropriate? Granted, many would faint at the idea of such a vulger invective from the inviolate sanctuary of cable TV. Surely some tea left a nostril or two after hearing Bernie use the “S” word… the heathen.
It would almost appear to me that this particular blog entry is a preemptive defense of a situation gone bad and that a sense of guilt underlies your text. Rationalization of that embarrassing stage presence mandates proactive justification – hence, this “defense of DD’s show” (my quotes). Surely you recognize this. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it. I didn’t see the show.

Look, Goldberg IS a hack (pretty much) and Jeff’s site here is (and remains) one of my favorite blogs.
BUT…that doesn’t change the fact that what he participated in was a disgrace that reflects badly upon him. Look, I’m a really, really, really big fan of yours – but I gotta call ’em as I see ’em, and this was just classless. I don’t care if you disagree with Goldberg, nothing justifies a 5-on-1 surprise ambush, especially given that:
a.) none of the uniformly hostile “panel members” had actually read the book.
b.) this ignorance apparently led you all to crucially misconstrue the thrust of Goldberg’s thesis.
This much should be rock-solid principle for you, Jeff, since I know you care a lot about these things and I know that you’ve been pretty damn fastidious about keeping up standards: if you haven’t read the book, you have no business going on the air to comment about it. If that means you have to cancel an appearance, then that’s what you do.
That’s even before I start talking about the conduct of the panel during the show itself. Look, I don’t know how things appeared during the taping of the show…but when you watch it Goldberg clearly is getting railroaded. Literally can’t get a word in edge-wise or complete any extended thought. That’s not cool, Jeff.
I know stubborn pride is always a tough thing to let go of, but as a supporter – and I gotta love these “I used to visit this site but I never will again!” people posting…gimme a break! – I’ll remind you that you don’t need to soften or alter your basic opposition to Goldberg, his book, or the underlying ideas animating it, in order to acknowledge that he shouldn’t have been treated as he was.

Anyway, regarding your “radical” suggestion, you are aware that B. Goldberg wrote a book to that effect, right? Shouldn’t the “onus” of disproving his selections be on the panel assembled to critique it? It might advance the discussion further if a) the panel doing the ambushing reads the material and b) commenters suggesting “radical” ideas be cognizant that the material already exists. Goldberg has presented the onus, in hardback no less. You seem to not grasp this rather salient point despite repeated posts in this thread stating the obvious.

Do you think they would be nice to him? If a guy like Bernie wants to write a book attacking liberals–that’s fine even though it’s childish. Everyone can defend themselves. Why then can’t he stand in the kitchen and take the heat? What does he expect will happen?
Now he can run around and whine that nasty liberals are attacking him. His book is an attack piece! All you have to do is read the list. Barbara Streisand is destroying America? Give me a break please. This whole elitist culture war is ridiculous, and for anyone to defend him is off the wall.

Some of the panel did not like that someone else had the temerity to tell a female to “shut-up”. Any participant in this sad affair older than 8 years of age should be ashamed that they acted like whiney little brats. Boohoo. Now shut the F*** up.
P.S. Why were “girls” included in such a rigorous discussion? They obviously are not acquited for such sharp discussion – we would not like to see them cry, indeed someone could say a bad word (all hail Howard Stern!)!

Mr. Goldberg was invited on our program to discuss his new book. We asked him if he would be willing to stay and join a panel of print and online journalists to discuss the people and issues he raised in the book and he agreed.

HOW DO YOU DISCUSS THE PEOPLE AND ISSUES HE RAISED IN A BOOK WITHOUT HAVING READ IT?
Answer- you wing it, like various slackers do in English class in high school… read the cliff notes, see the movie, read other summaries or articles written on the web and ask people who read the book what they think.
This isn’t what you meant with all your articles about journalism and blogging, right Jarvis?

Lets get this all straightened out:
You didn’t read the book- neither did the other hacks that were there for a discussion- about the book.
    It was 5:1

Hateful, ignorant bullying is the modus operandi of the so-called “new media”, where this kind of sickening display occurs almost nightly on shows like Scarborough Country and O’Reilly Factor.
I’m curious as to why an obscure talk show on a semi-obscure 24-hr news network could be seen as part of the “Leftstream media”, whatever that is supposed to be. Would Dennis Miller’s rants on CNBC also be considered “Leftstream”?
It’ll be interesting to see how Bernie Goldberg answers the above question, as I’m sure he’s just been handed a chapter for his next “Why the liberal media hates me” book. This man has made a nice career out of his alleged victimization at the hands of the mainstream media, so we’ll surely be hearing enhanced versions of this incident again and again.
Everyone involved in this schlockfest should be ashamed, as Goldberg is laughing all the way to the bank. It was an ambush, and a poorly executed one at that. Goldberg recognized it immediately, and exploited the situation to his advantage. Except for his seemingly unprovoked attack on Ms. Stasi, Goldberg debated well enough to make the rest look like fools. That’s coming from someone who despises the man. If ever I’ve seen a surefire candidate for The Daily Show’s “Great Moments in Punditry”, this is one.

  120. Arturo_Vandelay Avatar

It would be nice to see uncut film like C-Span instead of excerpts cut by the producers that set up the ambush. Even the bit posted to make Goldberg look bad had Stasi doing all the talking. I’m sure Goldberg is used to being ambushed by people who haven’t read his book because I debate people who haven’t read what they criticize all the time. I read Bias and Arrogance and they point to EXACTLY this type of thing being a regular thing in the “liberal” mainstream media. (though Donny doesn’t have the viewership to be anything but fringe)
Sorry, but I like debates to be equal and fair. This certainly doesn’t fit that criteria.

All you whiney liberals need to get your heads out of your asses. Seriously, are people really that offended when someone tells them to “shut up,” or are we just looking for another reason to uselessly attack those who don’t find everything so offensive. God for bid someone told a woman to shut up. He must oppose women’s rights as well, correct? Liberals are so skilled at turning little comments like “shut up” into political propaganda. Let’s be honest. Anyone who actually paid attention to the interview knows that Goldberg was rarely given a chance to respond. Deutsch was even pretending to be offended by Goldberg’s comments. Man, sensitivity has been taken to a new level. I could go on forever. I don’t expect a very kind response to this, but if you need advice call Ward Churchill. He seems like a smart guy.

Lileks provided the best response to the Buzzmachine’s warped concept cultural superiority. I recall the days when Buzzmachine banned certain ‘vulgar’ words on his site lest his daughter read such words while at the same time supported cultural vulgarness on the principle that Americans have the right to engage silly, inane sexist cultural vulgarity lest American be shamed as prudes.
Now Jeff is circling the wagons (5 to 1) to protect an industry, most noted for expanding our vast cultural vulgarness, by ambushing one person who wrote a book addressing our increasingly deteriorating vulgar culture by pinpointing individuals who feed into our vulgar cultural.
At least the Buzzmachine’s cultural superiority is consistant.

The people who comment on how wrong it is to have 3 or 4 panelists with the same views who make it a one sided debate must hate Fox News then. Fox does this all day everyday. They will take any issue and have a panel of three far right conservatives give a “Fair and Balanced” assessment of an issue. For him to say he’s NEVER seen anything like this before is absurd. I’m sure he has no problem with Hannity attacking any liberal guest for an entire segment and having Colmes say “We’ll be right back.” I’ve heard him spit the same lines about his book on a number of shows with softball questions, so big deal he had to feel a little heat this time. When he goes on O’Reilly he can expect to have his hand held. When you go on a liberals show you can assume you will face conflicting arguments. Either way he gets more attention for his book, so he should stop crying.

This “article” if you want to call it that, proves everything bad about Liberals. All you do is spin things your way, and yet everyone seems to know the actual truth. In my opinion, I think you must have other people brainstorming ideas on how you can make so little sense, because this level could not have been concieved by just one person.

Name ONE SINGLE TIME that has happened. Date and time would be nice. I happen to think FOXNews is overtly tabloid-ish in much of its coverage, but the evening opinion/analysis lineup has NEVER been staged as you describe. And it certainly hasn’t created a debacle as lopsided as the DD/Goldberg dustup. You are making this up out of wholecloth.

Watching Goldberg get smacked around on the Daily Show, and now CNBC has been as refreshing as watching a urchin squawling for candy in a packed convenience store getting spanked over daddy’s knee. “Shut up!” screams Goldberg; nice going, Bernie, the belt only came down faster across that pasty fat ass of yours.
But don’t worry, Bernie. While it may have hurt you more than it hurt them, have faith that you’ll eventually figure things out. Until then, rest assured that you’ll be sent out to fetch a hickory switch while your superiors await your post-haste return to behind the woodshed.

Boy, talk about a misleading post! Despite the five (count ’em, five!) Goldberg ambushers denouncing Goldberg for telling Linda Stasi to shut up, he, in fact did no such thing. Stasi was running on and on (and on), doing the typical ill-mannered ploy of asking several questions, one after the other, and then accusing the guest of not answering. Why don’t you answer, Bernie? “Because you don’t shut up!” was the answer by Goldberg. Saying “You don’t shut up” is not the same thing AT ALL as telling some one to shut up, it is simply making the point that the person doesn’t in fact – you know – shut up (i.e., stop talking long enough to give the guest a chance to respond). It was also very disingenuous of Stasi to say that Goldberg was “yelling at somebody to shut up…” (he wasn’t yelling, and he didn’t tell her to shut up-see above). Honestly Jeff; oh, right, never mind.

I came to this post (and the comments) after reading CQ.
I read through all the comments (some are outstanding!) while simultaneously listening to/viewing C-SPAN’s BookTV. If the majority of the claims are true about the ‘discussion’ of the book in question, the two formats couldn’t be more contrasting.
