Looks like there was a bit of ‘discussion’ even before JPII left us. I hope it’s not a false alarm, and if we do indeed have a new pope I wish him the best of luck.
Ratzinger!
Pope Benedict XVI. The NY Times beat out CNN on this one.
“Bennie from Bavaria” does sound a bit like some regular caller to a sport-talk radio show, but this ought to be interesting in terms of the new pope and the western media, since Ratzinger has been portrayed in recent years as sort of the Tom DeLay to John Paul II’s Dennis Hastert in Vatican City.
Anyone inside or outside the press who was hoping for some sort liberalization of the Church from John Paul II’s course will be disappointed, but on the other hand, given the new pope’s advanced age and his strict positions, it may mean a younger pope sometime in the near future might be a more moderate selection.
The Cardinals missed a real opportunity to establish an even more powerful Christianity in the developing world…I cannot believe they picked Ratzinger the “Panzercardinal” as the new ìPanzerpope.î I wish him the best because we really need a good pope just like the past one. Still, I cannot believe that the former head of the Office of the Inquisition got the 2/3 votes to get the white hat.

The Rat’s in. Grrrr.

Ratzinger is exactly the kind of Pope we need, if what you want is someone who can move the Catholic church from the 20th century into the 19th century.
Catholicism is a dying religion everywhere except the third world. Between the decreasing number of people who actually practice, and the shortage of new priests, it has no future in the developed world.
Gunther is right.
I view all organized religion with disdain, but stepping back objetively…
This religion fights human nature tooth and nail. If it feels good, it must be bad. If it’s fun, it’s a sin. Women are chattel.
They aim to tell people how to marry and live, yet they don’t allow their leaders to have normal lives.
I’m really going to let a “celibate” person, who’s never argued with a spouse over the trivial or the significant, to counsel me? On what authority? With what knowledge base?
Maybe I’ll ask my mechanic to perform knee surgery on me too.
Why do you think so many “Catholics” are a la carte practicers? 80% of the proclamations and edicts from the Vatican are garbage, and the other 20% are common sense that has nothing to do with god or what-have-you. Most of us can figure them out on our own. We don’t need to be brainwashed with fear.
Who cares? There is no relevance to my, or anyone else’s, daily life.
The Lutheran pastor who will be performing my ceremony in a couple months is a happily married man (38 years, I think), 4 kids of his own, and when they left the home, he adopted 2 disabled boys. I think he knows more about love and life than the entire Cardinal Senate combined. I would have chosen a JP, but my girl wanted Pastor Chuck. And I was absolutely fine with it, because he’s a really good person, and one with a clue.
Those who wish to live in medieval times, turn your eyes to Rome…
Woo hoo! Ratzinger!
Leftists wedded to the idea of relativism and false modernism that rejects moral values can’t get me down today. If you don’t like it, too bad for you. This new Pope is sure to create enemies, but he wouldn’t be doing his job if that weren’t the case.
Ratzinger was the theocrat who ordered Catholic voters and politicians in the US how to vote. I just hope some public figure in the US has the guts to tell the Grand Inquisitor off next time he tries to interfere in matters that are none of his church’s business.
The only consolation is that he’s old and that a new puff of white smoke can’t be more than a decade away.
Speaking of the Ratzinger communion controversy and other religious topics:
– “Is the Pope Catholic?”
– “Tony Perkins Joins the American Taliban”
I caught a snippit of network news last night (CBS or NBC, don’t remember) and their “expert” said that Ratzinger didn’t stand a chance to become pope because he had “kneecapped” too many people in the church. Is there a reason we listen/respect news people? I can’t think of a one.
Yeah Sydney, moral values like religious bigotry, pedophilia, hate, ignorance, and fear.
I guess I do reject those, damned lefty that I am.
I’m all for laughter, love, wine, women, and song. Oh, blow jobs too. Mmmm, sodomy.
False modernism? What the hell is that supposed to mean? Are you pining for the good-old-days that never existed? When everyone was a virgin at marriage, there were no out-of-wedlock pregnancies, when no one swore or made dirty jokes? No one drank, did drugs, murdered, stole, etc. etc. etc.
Look, if you need a man with a funny hat to guide you through life, fine.
But don’t assume we’re all so gullible or weak-minded. We’ll get along fine without you or Herr Popenfuhrer.
Oh no, I agree with paladin!
What is the world coming to…
Yes Angelos, it’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine).
This is incredible, the poor guy is not even 24 hours out on the balcony and you folks are calling him the Panzerpope, Herr Popenfuhrer, and The Grand Inquisitor. Maybe there are a few pre-concieved notions about the guy. Geez give the guy a chance. After all the catholic church has made it along pretty well these last 2000 years. TONY
GOD HELP POPE BENEDICT XVI RID CUBA OF COMMUNISM
Joseph Ratzinger understands first hand how hate and communism can plague a nation, as he himself fell prey to the nazis as a child. So please, Pope Benedict XVI help Cuba’s children experience enlightenment and help them find freedom from persecution and a dictatorship that underlines hate and oppression.
Ratzinger no more.
Better get used to say Benedict XVI.
Did anyone remember John Paul II’s real name until his biography was everywhere recently?
B:
ìÖhe [the Pope] himself fell prey to the nazis as a childÖî
Really.
Maybe then Pope Ratzinger, unlike all other popes in the last 50 years, will take responsibility for the Church’s complicity in the Nazi Holocaust.
Please see ìA Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and Its Unfulfilled Duty to Repairî by Daniel Goldhagen.
B:
You anti-Semite, the Panzerkardinal didn’t ìfall prey to the Nazis,î he joined them. First, ideologically in the Hitler Youth, then physically in the Luftwaffe and infantry. Only when it was clear Germany would lose the war and the Allied Front approached did he desert and flee to his family’s home for refuge. There, rightfully, his was taken prisoner and put in a POW camp. He should have been treated no differently than a Taliban fighter today — Gitmoized.
It’s nothing short of surreal (or perversely fitting) that a former Nazi would be named pope. Pope Ratzinger needs to take responsibility for his own and the Church’s complicity in the Nazi Holocaust. He has Jewish blood on his hands ñ and we will not forget.
yehuda–you are being terribly dishonest. Ratzinger’s father hated the Nazis. Hitler Youth was mandatory. The guy would’ve been 18 in 1945, military age, and he deserted then. He never fought for the Nazis. There were a lot of Jewish Nazis who did, but Ratzinger was not a Nazi soldier.
Kat is absolutely correct. As a Jew myself i find it extraordinarily offensive to condemn someone like the new Pope for belonging to the compulsory Hitler Youth and for being a soldier in the German Army, albeit, for only a brief period.
The Vatican as a whole has done more to better relations with the Jewish people then all of the other religious insitutions out there.
Need i remind you how the American Methodist Church is doing all it can to vilify the State of Israel, to say nothing of the anti semitism and hatred that appears to be the very core of modern Islam?
I seriously doubt the Pope was a committed Nazi. But, I’m not so convinced he didn’t, like most Germans at the time, have a bellicose nationalistic political bend and was the product of deep and virulent intergenerational anti-Semitism.
David – Where did you buy your crystal ball which enabled you to know something about a man you, in fact, know nothing about?
Based on your posting i would say that while you were probably never a dedicated Nazi, i am not convinced that you are in fact not an anti semite.
See how easy it is when you just spew idiocy?
Howard,
Don’t leave the Baptists out. These Bible-thumping, sister-humping, Bush-voting, conservative redneck freaks can’t wait to round-up Jews so they can get the Rapture to begin.
Sloppy Dawg – Do you have a point to make…?
Until yesterday, I still held out hope that the new Pope would name himself George Ringo I . . .
“I’m all for laughter, love, wine, women, and song. Oh, blow jobs too.”
So that’s why you got your tongue pierced…
