I see you have an “hourly” catagory for your blogrolls — can you also include a catagory for those you check more frequently than that? Thanks
I must say that it is so encouraging that so many comments confirm that we know the Pope is going on to be with our Lord. What a blessing!

Was that sarcasm? The way things are lately I’ve half expected people to bitching about having religion shoved down their throat with all the pope coverage…
This pope has no relevance to American religious thought. He’s strictly an old-world phenom. American catholics for the most part are more progressive when it comes to tolerance of gays and birth control.
He’s just a part of a european religious heirarchy that has a dubious past including such dark moments as the spanish inquisition.
You go ahead and get all weepy on a Saturday night, I’m going to Scores, drink some JD and get some lap dances.
I heard it on “Newsradio 780” (50kW blowtorch WBBM Chicago) and immediately turned on MSNBC. Of course, once it was confirmed I had to get in the car and head into the station to find out what I was going to have on my plate for the night. (I direct the weekend news at the station I work for)

The Pope was also a big figure in third world countries where catholicism is well embraced. Many Latin America countries’ TV channels had nothing but Pope News.
At least Dave Winer gets it right:
Listening to the endless radio “coverage” of the Pope’s death, it’s remarkable how unbalanced it is. They have priests, saying we all know deep inside the Pope was right about everything. Hello. Earth to Catholics. The Pope was a good PR guy, but come on, he was against birth control. The Catholics actually burned condoms in AIDS-plagued Africa. Now would be a great opportunity for some of the real reporting the pros are so famous for. Instead they’re running an endless infomercial for the Catholic Church.
von:
No sarcasm at all.
Another rock song about the pope:
Chorus:
The pope smokes dope, God gave him the grass
The pope smokes dope, he likes to smoke in mass
The pope smokes dope, he’s a groovy head
The pope smokes dope, the pope smokes dope
(oh yeah! 3x)
God is high on mescaline, Satan’s high on smack
Popes in Rome get stoned on grass, Jesus freaks are back
Jesus Christ a super-hippie never shoot up junk
Popes in Rome get stoned alone, priests, in church get drunk
(Chorus)
Now Jack ‘n’ Jill went up the hill, to fetch a pail of water
Jill forgot to take her pill, now she’s got a daughter
Taking pills is not a joke for a groovy Pope
Birth control can be a toke of marijuana smoke
(Chorus)
The pope is getting higher (re: higher! higher! – 4x)
(Chorus)
Cha! Cha! Cha!

He was a bitterly reactionary conservative about Church doctrine, and rolled back changes brought to modernize the Church after Vatican II, during which he himself had argued strongly for human rights, as well those proposed by his immediate, more liberal, predecessor. He attacked liberation theology, the idea of an activist Christ, continued the Turin Shroud hoax, brought the ultra-conservative Opus Dei to formal power, reduced the power of the Jesuits for being too liberal and politically engaged. He damned homosexuals, contraception, abortion, and the rights of women, while praising missionary fanatics like the vile Mother Teresa. He deepened the divide between dogma and the real modern world. And perhaps, worst of all, it was on his watch that thousands of pedophile priests ran rampant and were afforded safe haven against prosecution in secular courts. In short, he was the Ken Lay of religion.
All this nonsense about his role in the fall of Communism is just that, as specious as the claims made of Reagan last year. In fifty years, once the Church has been forced into progressivism to stem the loss of believers in an increasingly secular world, he’ll be seen for what he was- a bulwark against modernism and human dignity. Yes, he spoke out against wars, but was also against World War 2. In short, he would have emulated the complicity the Church had in Mussolini’s rise to power. All in all, not alot there- and most of it negative.
The Pope is dead! Let’s abolish the post! DAN
Whew! Dan? Feel better?
You left out the part about him having bad table manners, running yellow lights and being a lousy tipper.
And pulling Dan’s glasses off, throwing them on the ground, and stomping on them. And then keying his car.
Oops, we shouldn’t mess with Dan, he’s a Writer™:
There was something about female legs that got to Tony. Yeah, tits were fine- but there was something a little too Oedipal about them, especially big tits. As for ass- too close to the pudenda, therefore too blatantly sexual. But legs, legs were pure mathematics- beauty alone by itself, and Amberís legs were a marvel of the universe. They were long- she was 5í8î, and they held his gaze. Her ass, despite his protestations, was also marvelous- not big, not super-small, just perfect, taut. Its curve was etched into his mind. He once tried an experiment, bouncing a quarter off her ass from six inches height. When she held her buns tight it would bounce back almost two inches. Utterly amazing! As were her tits- luscious, firm, not too large, nor small. Perfectly proportioned to her spectacular body. Her face, well, that was something of a mathematical jackpot, as well, and crested off with her light blond shoulder-length hair. My, oh my. She could be the biggest bitch in the world and heíd still take it. And he did, for a while.
Yes I know, I suck. In penance, his website is going in my Web-o-liciousness Defined bookmarks folder. No, really.
Dan,
he sounds like my kind of man!
“This pope has no relevance to American religious thought. He’s strictly an old-world phenom. American catholics for the most part are more progressive when it comes to tolerance of gays and birth control.”
– actually, that’s not exactly true. There are plenty of older Catholics in this country who, although they are moderately liberal, support the pope when he makes a bold statement of righteousness about Terri S. and even the invasion of Iraq. They are, however, selective about what issue they ignore. For example, the church is against capital punishment but many liberal Catholics support it.
Hmm, snarkiness, and a short story excerpt. Nice refutation of facts. Press ‘rewrite’ Andrea. DAN
Better yet, the Rude Pundit does a great #:

I would never refute your “facts” DAN. You’re like some kind of cosmic poetic guru to me. I am so into you right now. I want to make you crazy. Craaaazy.
Nuttier babes than you have tried….[fill in the….]
