Pathetic little troll

: There is a pathetic little troll I banned who is coming into various posts typing “poop” and snickering like the first grader he is. This the guy who has the bad taste to call himself Gandhi. He went overboard once too often. If he had taken his meds and behaved, I might have let him back. But instead, he went on a “poop.” So intelligent. So mature. So friggin’ pathetic. He is no longer welcome here. Just to the kind of guy I am, I’ll link to him here so you can go read his fine prose in his house. And my advice to him: Get a life. But get your meds first.

: Just Barking Mad uncovers the whole conspiracy.

: UPDATE: I continue to play wack-a-mole with this little boy with no life. And to answer his questions stupid innuendo: I have no financial relationship whatesoever with anyone he lists (apart from making contributions to SoA… and he doesn’t seem to understand that so I’ll make it clearer: no one but my employer pays me); I’ve explained many times that ITM are the friends of one of the early bloggers in Iraq with whom I communicated; I never heard of the other organizations he tinfoil-hats about; and I do still wish this poor, pathetic little troll would get his meds.

I was wondering what happened to the “The Iraq War Is Wrong” guy.

  3. Skate Avatar

I don’t care how stupid he is, feeding the troll by talking about him in an entry dedicated to him is just asking for him to re-post from somewhere else.

  4. Richard Bennett Avatar

Sometimes the best way to kill a troll is to over-feed him.

  5. Tom Avatar

What I love about his site, is that he has made a call to arms about your treatment of him. After looking at his traffic, all you have to worry about is his Mom spamming you.

well actually whoever “”andhix is has some interesting posts to boot. He has come current event postings which seems to be metablogging.
He got under Jeff’s thick hide (if I may so say). But, then again I wonder why he got Jeff annoyed so much that Jeff had to spend the time to actually blog this foo ?? No, I really meant it. Its like WTF with someone posting ‘opp’s or ‘poop’ anywhere ?? Everyone has trolls all over !! No biggie.
It will certainly draws my attention when someone Like Jeff gets ticked off with another blogger and actually blogs it !!
So whos playing who — “Gandhx” or Jeff ?
Update : Whewwwwww.. “Your comment could not be submitted due to questionable content: Gandhx
“- had to change the syntax to get over the hurdle !!

Despite me being associated with that word by Marketplace.com yesterday, I assure you I’m in no way associated with this particular pooper.

He really must have had a lot of fun making the “Copy/Paste/Paste/Paste/Paste/Paste…etc.” mouse click in the thread below, since he decided to do it again before Jeff banned his and delted his wisdom of the ages from the comments…

Let’s not forget that Ghandx was involved in the attempt to link Iraq the Model to the CIA shortly before the Iraq elections. An allegation that could have cost someone their life.
Anyway, I sent him a letter of sympathy. I put a copy on my blog as I’m sure he’ll delete it shortly.

Jeff, I’ve made what I think is a thoughtful reply in your defense on his site. I wonder what kind of treatment I’ll be subjected to?

  12. Jeff Jarvis Avatar

In response to this post, I said this:
Go to the site in dispute. Read its rampant racism. Read its horrid antisemitism. Then tell me that you endorse that as news.
I’m not talking about the Google search; that vacuums up anything on the internet.
I’m talking about GoogleNews, where an employee of Google selects sites to include. They included a site that is horrendously racist and antisemitic. And you have no problem with that? Should they include the news reports from the North American Man Boy Love Association? No, I don’t think so.
As for the troll: Somebody who keeps typing “nazi” and “poop” isn’t welcome. My blog is my home and I do choose who is invited in. I hardly ever ban anyone. But this guy went over the edge more than once.
Google decides whom to include in GoogleNews. They included nazis.
I decide whom to invite into my home. I decided not to invite that troll back.
Know each of us by our choices.

To any and all past, present or future trolls: you’re just ruining it everyone else. Jeff and any other blogger is going to come down on you, but ultimately we suffer. Please, if you’ve got a problem with something on this or any other blog, make a reasonable comment or email the blogger in question. If you can’t do that, have a Coke and a smile and shut the fuck up.

That moron also wreaked havoc at Michael J Totten’s site in the past. Everything is a conspiracy to that wacko. He is manically obsessed with the guys at Iraq The Model, for one thing. It’s sad and pathetic, really.

Wow, what a piece of work that guy is. I clicked over and he’s slandering my friends, my colleauges, and my boss. (Yes, really.)

  19. Hooey Avatar

What about the questions the guy poses? Jeff didn’t answer them. Why not? I mean, if Jeff has the time and interest to cite the guy’s blog, you’d think he has the time the answer the questions.

    Shalom Jeff,
It’s your site so you decide who gets to post and who doesn’t. That’s the way this works and I essentially do the same thing (although with my pitiful traffic, I’ve only had to ban one poster).
Having said that, while I might agree that Ghand(i) is annoying, after reading a few of the posts on his site I don’t see that’s he’s anywhereís near over the top, i.e. ranting about aliens or in need of an aluminum hat.
But, like I said: Your site, your rules.
    B’shalom,
    Jeff

Sorta off topic but…..I sometimes go to political chat rooms where I sit and just read the posts as they scoll by to catch the flavor of the day, they refer to this participation as “chat monkey”. I am quite fond of going to blog sites and just reading the posts and comments, does that make me a “blog monkey”?

  26. kl Avatar

Jeff, for people like Lukasiak (who just took a break from photocopying memos at Kinko’s to reiterate his belief that you’re a fascist and a meany), maybe you should clarify that you banned this youngster because he was posting the same sentence over and over hundreds of times, in the manner of a complete loon.
But then again, I guess you’re not going to be able to penetrate the tinfoil no matter what you say.

  27. franky Avatar

Bummer that you have to ban people, but unfortunately some times it’s necessary. I missed what G_handi wrote, but from reading here it seems he cut and pasted words without any argument – looks like ban was justified to me.
Although I would make one quick point: some people are obviously trolls, looking to annoy the host and other commentators, but increasingly we’re seeing people coming in with coherent arguments that happen to go against the prevailing wisdom of the thread called trolls too. It’s the same moronic temprament that calls other people evil or racists – it’s an attempt to delegitimise a viewpoint you don’t happen to agree with.

  28. ed Avatar

Sounds like those pranks that Stern fans play when they get on the air on call in shows.

  29. Hubris Avatar

    Hooey,
Take a look at the comment threads and see if dissent is being tolerated. Many people attack Jeff contantly, often in an abusive fashion. It’s more than I would tolerate. Jeff doesn’t have to let somebody be an asshole in his own living room.

  30. EverKarl Avatar

    Hooey,
By all means, send Jeff a copy of your bank statements and tax returns for the last seven years. And if you can get copies of ghand_’s records, send those along, too.

  31. Hubris Avatar

By the way, “contantly” is even more extreme than “constantly.” Trust me.

  32. Hubris Avatar

    Hooey,
The evidence doesn’t support your observation with respect to this site. There’s a helluva lot of unfettered dissent. Often, it seems that more people come here to disagree with Jeff than to agree with him.
You mentioned the junior high school mentality – it also extends to commenters feeling free to be jerks when they can do it from a comfortable distance, rather than face to face.

  33. Gord H. Avatar

Following the link I visited Just Barking Mad, and for the first time I read a bit of his site. In particular I noticed a few of his comments relating to Juan Cole, such as:
    – “..what a despicable turd Juan Cole really is ..”
    – “Juan? I hope you die a horrible wasting death.”
    – “People like Juan Cole have to be repudiated at every level. They are a poison on the earth.”
Well, Cole is just a little bit arrogant, prickly, and over sensitive. But – with some notable exceptions – his comments are pretty balanced and reasonably argued. (I didn’t say they were – necessarily – correct!) And I know that Jeff Jarvis has called him, rather intemperately, “pond scum” on at least one occasion. But the tone and content of Just Barking Mad is beyond defending. It seems to me that before attacking the strange links provided by Google, Mr. Jarvis might want to take some time thinking about whom he is sending his innocent readers to. There’s absolutely no irony in the name of Just Barking Mad’s blog. The man (I safely assume it’s a man) is not worth reading. I know he is not the only one – not by a long shot. But isn’t it time that the significant, and widely read, bloggers started exercising some reasonable judgment and stopped linking to idiots? Or is that simply too MSM?

  34. kl Avatar

“I only posted the spam comments (like ‘JEFF JARVIS IS ON THE BUSH GRAVY TRAIN’ x 1000 times) AFTER I had been banned and my comments had been deleted.”
    Well then, that’s completely different.

    Hooey,
You believe you should not have to disclose your finances because you are not prominent and Jeff is. But here you are, at his blog, asking to see his finances based on no evidence of anything improper. I could just as easily speculate on the basis of no evidence that perhaps some shadowy entity is paying you to attempt to cast doubt on a prominent blogger. It’s not like paid partisan hacks don’t come here and attack Jeff on a personal basis. So maybe you should disclose your finances, because I’m curious about them.

  36. /pd Avatar

Jeff: you have a life. Stop updating this posting, as it aggrevates my aggregator. Its a troll. deal with it.. move on.. !! No more Analysis this or Analysis that. Its –Deal with this , Deal with that. No biggie..

  37. Gregg Avatar

Why do you equate him being a troll with some mental illness that requires medication?

  38. Seth Avatar

Jeff, did you just make the phrase “tinfoil hat” a verb? Are you ‘verbing’ it, like Calvin & Hobbes?

  39. MisterPundit Avatar

It seems to me that before attacking the strange links provided by Google, Mr. Jarvis might want to take some time thinking about whom he is sending his innocent readers to.
Oh please, did “Just Barking Mad” kill 6 million Jews? The internet is full of people who dislike each other, sometimes to the point where they would get personal about it (I believe I called Michael Moore a “turd” a couple of times), but there is a big difference between personal insults, and Nazis supporting genocide.
Besides, Juan Cole is overrated to the point of parody.

  40. Hooey Avatar

O.K., now I think Jeff has put it to rest. He’s on record saying that his employer is the only entity that pays him. As far as I’m concerned, that ends it unless “g” can demonstrate otherwise. I never wanted Jeff to lay his finances bare for all to see. His statement is sufficient.
Beyond that, I think the labeling and thin-skinness here, which characteristic of the blogosphere in general, is nonetheless unfortunate. Better to take the high road and to use other means of defense against spammers and trolls.

  41. nemo Avatar

Where is JJ on the record saying his employer is the only entity that pays him? Is that from a previous thread?

  42. Jeff Jarvis Avatar

uh, nemo, try reading the post above again.
and there’s nothing to put to rest here. the troll wanted to cause trouble. i made the mistake of feeding him. he then behaved worse. lesson learned.
    no feeding the trolls.

  43. nemo Avatar

You know, Jeff, there is another lesson to be learned from all this: “trolling”/spamming/etc is a bit like terrorism – if someone is determined to get at you, there is really very little you can do to stop it, short of totally destroying the basic freedoms afforded by a Comments section.
The amazing this is that so little of it goes on, because people are basically decent and will only resort to such lengths when they feel they, their loved ones or their beloved values (religion, freedom, even Google News) have been very seriously threatened or mistreated.
Rather than demonizing the g-man as a troll, deleting his comments and banning him, you could have taken a more laissez-faire approach. The results would have been about the same…
Similarly, governments which declare that “We will NEVER negotiate with Terrorists!” usually do end up being forced to sit down, acknowledge the very real grievances of those who have resorted to such extremes and make some changes.
Following 9/11, for example, Bush pulled US troops out of Saudi, a key Al Quaeda demand…
I’m not condoning violence, just making an observation. Look at Mandela (former “terrorist”) or Northern Ireland for examples…
I think there is a lesson here.

  44. Kat Avatar

Nemo–only an idiot would have allowed pages and pages of nonsense like g had posted. There was no point to it–just some crazy person having a tantrum and screaming the same thing over and over again….pages of it. Why not invite g to your site, Nemo? Or better still, go over to his crazy site and enjoy.

  45. Hooey Avatar

The blogosphere is an evolving animal. There are no fixed practices. The owner of a site is the equivalent of a newspaper publisher and has the absolute right over all content, so the question becomes one of what the opinion market wants.
Jeff’s site strikes me as pretty typical of the blogosphere in that you’ve got an idiocyncratic and somewhat egotistical and thin-skinned guy (it’s almost always a guy, “Wonkette” notwithstanding) running it. And you’ve got a bunch of people commenting who are also idiosyncratic, egotistical and thin-skinned.
The difference between this and a newspaper is that a blog has essentially unlimited capacity, which makes the question not one of conserving scarce resources but one of how to control the editorial voice.
As someone who likes to roam the blogs and file comments — and who enjoys being a contrarian — I find the blogosphere awfully similar to right-wing radio in the sense that the blogs tend to become echo chambers. I’ve found myself banned from right-wing and left-wing sites for being an effective dissenter, and there seems to be no difference between the right and the left when it comes to the likelihood of being banned.
It’s easy to label dissent as “trolling” or “spamming.” It’s also easy to be so high-handed that a dissenter winds up turning into a troll or a spammer. We can call this the “first you drive then crazy, then you call them crazy” mode of operating.
Sites that want to allow dissent while protecting against wackos or thread hogs can do it by imposing an hourly, daily or weekly limit on postings, and by installing a filter that would catch endless repetitions. But that’s not what the blogs generally do, because the blogmasters are usually idiosyncratic, thin-skinned egotists.
Just like the people who file comments in threads like this one.

  46. nemo Avatar

    Kat,
As i said before, the g-guy only spammed Jeff AFTER he had been banned and his comments were deleted. Got it now????

  47. Kat Avatar

If someone is banned, how can he spam–oh yeah, he used names like Jeffsux and katsux–a real mature individual whose points I want to hear.

  48. Jeff Jarvis Avatar

No, “nemo,” you didn’t see the posts I killd that led to the banning. I would have let him back in if he’d behaved. But he did not. He got worse. He is not welcome here.

  49. chris Avatar

Is it trolling if I never comment but read from a distance. I may be guilty :-) But I’ve seen this topic come up more than once.
I think any site that allows comments to posts that are political will bring about trolls. It comes with the territory for a popular site like this one.
