Listening to Edward Ayers, Ph.D., Dean of UVA school of Arts and Sciences yesterday :
we get so much false information, the only hope for getting to the truth is by holding each other up to our own standards of truth, that’s the way we can find out the truth in our era of misinformation.
I wonder how the subject matter covered on the blogs breaks down. I suspect taht the overwhelming majority have nothing to do with politics or news or current events, and therefore cannot be compared to the New York Times in any meaningful sense. Most blogs seem to be about cooking, pets, work, personal diaries, and all the other things that humans are interested in. It’s not like Blogspot exists solely to facilitate discussion of news and politics.
Therefore, comparing Blogspot to the NYT is meaningless. It would be like saying, “there are more people living east of the Rockies than watch the Sopranos.”
Yeah, but so what?
“It’s not like Blogspot exists solely to facilitate discussion of news and politics”
Very good point.
It’s a valid comparison of audience sizes. I certainly wasn’t suggesting that blogs were going to replace the NYT as a news source.
I’m focused on Internet advertising. It think it’s a highly relevant comparison from the point of view selling ads from a media property point of view. Again, I don’t suggest that advertisers are going to pay anything like the same rates for blogs as for the NYT, but from a media reach point of view, it’s highly relevant, especially when you look at how fast that audience is growing in that Alexa chart.
Rick, pc4media posted an interesting commentary on this in the context of blogads versus advertising with the Boston Globe. He trackbacked to your original post on the subject, or click my link above and look in the footer for the pc4media link.
