To the barricades, bloggers — yet again

: The Global Voices blog reports that Jeff Ooi, the pioneering (and charming) Maylasian blogger, was taken in for questioning regarding a blog post. This is the dark side of blogs getting attention in the wrong countries.

Sounds to me like it was just a check to see if this guy was an Islamic extremist or not. You do know that Malaysia has a problem with Islamic extremists operating in the country, don’t you?
Anyway, it doesn’t appear there was any harm done so there’s no reason to get your panties in a bunch and jump into a situation you know nothing about nor can comprehend just because a blogger is involved.

Well, Robert, I’d enjoy seeing you piss in your pants when your government — which does not offer the guarantees of ree speech that ours does — calls you in for questioning just for something you said. And you’ve said plenty that deserves questioning…

Malaysia after 1957 has had an extremely touchy political balance between the Malays, Chinese, and Indians; marked by flare-ups that have led to bloodshed. Against this backdrop, the muzzling of political dissent by the parties of the Barisan Nasional — the “national front,” the political establishment of Malaysia — has been rationalized for a generation as a way of preventing civil war.
Althoug the BN has “worked” for many years, the Internet is throwing sand in the gears, exposing the heavy state censorship of media, the back-door political horse trading, and the crony capitalism that have been the hallmarks of Malaysian governnment. Younger Malaysians of all ethnic groups aren’t satisfied with the old political machine. They seek a more egalitarian politics where self-interest is not defined in terms of what ethnic group you belong to. Malaysia is drifting into a crisis where the half-measures promoted by the BN may not be enough.
We need to keep the spotlight on Jeff Ooi. We don’t want hiim to become another Anwar Ibrahim, rotting in prison on transparently trumped-up charges because his conscience could no longer lead him to support the status quo.

    Dear Mr. Jarvis:
I am the person who challenged you about your use of the word “Claremont” to name the college you transferred from

  5. Scott Ferguson Avatar

Flame wars in blogs are just as stupid as they were in i’net newsgroups.
BTW, “injun” is the same class of word as “nigger,” you low life.
    Mitakuye oyasin.

    Von: Touche.
Jeff: My apologies. Why do I need to lose it? I’m doing wi-fi on the terrace of a hotel in Kona, listening to the surf, looking at a cruise liner and some outrigger canoeists, waiting for my iced tea. I forget my place in the world sometimes.

scott: I wasn’t really directing that toward you, I completely agreed with you. I just found something really strange in the odd “injun” post, and another post a few entries down where some guy asked us “why we are reading blogs if we have free press…”. (or something to that effect) Besides, if you have been around long enough to even know about the newsgroups these days, you are not one for me to be lecturing to. Most people these days just look at me oddly when I mention I found something on the newsgroups… :)

Honest Injun, Honest Injun? I agree, we all need to go to Iraq to prove our bona fides. But how do I get a uterus?

    Von,
The last time I looked in newsgroups, I was seeking “one-handed entertainment.” It isn’t even much good for that anymore, either, :^)
I lived in Malaysia for about 18 months while working on a contract there a dozen years ago. To someone who came from a liberal democracy, I found their political climate suffocating, yet understandable. I tend to cut the government there a little slack (just a little) because of their history and ethnic make-up. The USA has never faced a situation quite like Malaysia has.
At the same time, I get the feeling that the younger generation, which has a much higher standard of living than their parents, thinks it’s time for a change in the way the government works — definitely NOT an armed revolution, but one that sets aside the lexicon of canards that the BN has operated under. The emergence of a political party that crosses ethnic lines would be a HUGE step toward a more liberal government. It would also turbo-charge Malaysia’s progress toward becoming a true world power.
I hope that by the time I’m ready to retire in oh, 12 years or so, I can move back to Malaysia. I love the people, love the food, and love the hot weather. But if the situation is not stable, I’ll settle for Hawaii. Anything but Rahway, New Jersey (my present address) (sorry Jeff) :)

Lest I forget, when we left India I grew up in Arizona surrounded by the Navajo, Hopi, Pima, Apache and Papago. They remain my friends — so email me and I will direct your charges of racism to them for an answer as to just how racist yours truly is.
After all, Jarvis is only racist towards A-RABS.

What “spam” did someone pretending to be me send? Please do tell — is someone spamming you using my email address? Please — I have not emailed anyone on this thread — is someone using my email address? I will contact AOL and track this down….

BTW: As a gay man, I don’t buy into the notion that special dispensation is allowed when a homosexual male refers to himself as a “faggot.” It’s just projected self-hatred, sad and pathetic.
And as for my Lakota in-laws from the Pine Ridge rez (deceased partner’s family), they would never derogate themselves by using the “i” word in self-reference; nor would I ever use such an unloving and repugnant reference toward them.
If you think your genes give you the right to hate yourself, discuss it with your therapist, I don’t have the time.

injun, I emailed you like an hour ago, still you persist. That’s what I meant by “spamming”. You keep posting crap that doesnt’ really belong here (neither does this post, btw, but this is my last I promise) So, since you can’t quite get it, I was equating your ignorant posts to “spam”. Get the analogy?

For clarification: Jeff Ooi’s questioning wasn’t even about something he’d written himself… it was about a defamatory comment about Islam that some random person posted in his comments section, and which he had immediately challenged and then deleted. Seems like some governments want to hold bloggers accountable for what random crazies post in their comments section. Now THAT’s really scary.
BTW, Mr. Robert McClelland, Jeff Ooi is about as far from being an Islamic extremist as a law-abiding Malaysian can get, and the Malaysian authorities know that all too well. They have been scrutinizing him for some time. In fact it was for the opposite reason – alleged lack of respect for Islam because somebody put a nasty comment about Islam on his blog – that the police are trying to intimidate him. But this is actually just a pretext because his blog pulls no punches when it comes to Malaysia’s ruling elites.
That’s worth getting one’s “panties in a bunch” about, IMHO. That is, if you really do care about free speech, and if you believe that Malaysians deserve to enjoy that right as much as Americans do.

BTW, ever try a Spam Musubi? It’s really quite good. Here’s another culinary secret: Spam Lite tastes MUCH better than regular Spam, because it’s less salty! I love the stuff, even though I don’t reallly need to watch my sodium.

Note, well, Armando that you did not make this judgment based on a SINGLE issue or stand. You made your Official Liberalometer Meter Reading based on whether I criticized your enemies or praised your friends.
This is the heart of the matter. Liberal / conservative or right /left, if they have any meaning left at all, apply to the world of ideas and positions. Looking at Jeff’s previous post in this thread, it is clear that on all but one substantive issue Jeff is left-of-center.
It is very telling that Armando does not address a single policy issue, he only discusses media/blogosphere scandals and judges Jeff on how strongly he has fought on which side. There is a word for this quality, but it is not liberal or left, it is partisan. Armando’s point is that Jeff is not a good partisan soldier for the (left wing of the) Democratic party. I don’t think that Armando or Kos realize that to many people that is no criticism at all. Someone can be a liberal but not a partisan. In fact, these are the people who have a chance of convincing those of us in the center of voting your way. Partisanship turns most voters off, big time. Passionate advocacy for deeply held positions, conducted civilally, changes minds.
Armando also displays a big misunderstanding on where the center is. Many people on both sides do the same. Here are a few pointers:
The center likes George Bush (they may not think he is a great President, but they like him)
The center likes Bill Clinton (ditto)
The center strongly supported the Iraq war at first, grudgingly stayed behind it through the worst, and are strongly behind the Iraqi democracy now.
The center wants more government provided health care.
The center is deeply ambivalent about abortion.
The center is deeply ambivalent about gun control.
If you do not regularly discuss politics with people who hold most of these beliefs, you probably don’t have a good sense of the center of US politics.
