Microsofthearted

: Wonderful story in The Economist on Robert Scoble as Microsoft’s chief humanizing officer and the death of corporate communications, aka PR. Well, sure. If you actually tell the truth to people you don’t have to spend on spin. See this example of Scoble responding to someone who smells rot in the company.

    Quote FTA:
Mr Scoble seems to be worth his salary. He has become a minor celebrity among geeks worldwide, who read his blog religiously.
Well, I’ve never heard of him. I think it’s just an attempt by microsoft to try and make their company fit in a new world where apple is kicking butt right now, and more people are actually looking for an alternative to their products. IMHO of course.

Yes, I like R. Scoble, and I posted the URL to The Economist online article on his and Shel Israel’s THE RED COUCH blog.
If someone has “never heard of him”, they must not get out much, blog-wise. Hmph.
I’m sending you a 2 question survey and I will be honored if you respond to it. Thanks a lot.

    Von,
I’m sorry. I’ve never heard of you, so why should it matter if you have never heard of Robert Scoble? Because it goes to show your ignorance on the very subject you address.

Von: I’ve been blogging since 2000. Long before Apple’s resurgence.

Von, I agree Apple is kicking butt right now.
I’m interested how long it will last. Seriously.
[To save me having to type it out all over again, I blogged about it earlier today:]
“Well, as a branding exercise Apple interests me less [than Microsoft], simply because it’s so UTTERLY defined already.
And it has a very clear idea about what kind of ‘experience’ they want their user to have.
Short-term this is a strength, long-term this is a weakness.
Apple’s brand is all about emphasizing what we already know about Apple. Microsoft’s brand (and this is where Robert is proving himself so useful) should be all about emphasizing what we don’t already know about Microsoft.”

Well, if how many blogs you know of are the standard of how smart you are, then I suppose I am in fact an idiot.
I don’t know that anyone has ever called me a geek hero either. That was my point. Now if someone said that Linus Torvalds was a geek hero, then I suppose I would understand that. This is a comment section though, not a discussion board, so I’ll stop my ignorant rant now. :)
