Another launch: A new RSS reader

Another launch: A new RSS reader

: A new RSS reader is taking the veil off today with a public beta at the Guardian: Newspoint, from a Swiss/U.S. company called Consenda, will be distributed through newspaper companies, allowing them to handle advertising and also to offer feeds of classifieds. They’ve been working with the Guardian, the LA Times, and Advance Internet (my day job, which means I’ve given them some bad advice now and again). Go give it a try.

I don’t get it – I use a proprietary RSS aggregator for the privilige of reading your content? Maybe its me but I’m happy with Newsgator and the whole point of RSS is for the information to come to me.

First you had to go get the Newsgator reader, then the content comes to you! Same with all readers, including NewsPoint.
This NewsPoint is a real breakthrough, well worth changing from existing readers.

Jayme: The point is primarily that when papers (and others) offer rss feeds they can now offer a simple reader without having to send them to 10 different places. The hope is that this spreads the rss gospel. By all means, if you already get a paper’s feeds via FeedDemon, great. This is just another option with some new features.

I’ll check it out – I have yet to see a free reader I really like. Of course, I do most of my intraday reading through Bloglines since the day job doesn’t like downloads, but a decent reader is always something to be recommended. Personally, I’m waiting for the TiVo rss reader…

IMHO, it’s a waste of time. The real breakthrough will be integrating RSS feeds into your garden variety Web browser so you don’t have to download an application and you can collect interesting feeds as you surf the web. Firefox is doing that now – not too elegantly just yet – and I’m sure Microsoft isn’t far behind, if they haven’t already incorporated it into their latest version of IE.

What latest version of IE? It has been ages since they released a new version. And Firefox and Safari have leadped far ahead.
The next version of Safari does have a pretty good RSS reader. Unfortunately, it will require people to upgrade to the version of OSX coming out later this year.
Newspoint isn’t available for the Mac (and the site doesn’t mention the system requirements), so I can’t see how it compares to other readers.
But the intent is probably to have a link below the RSS feeds on a site which allows people to download an easy to use reader.
