: I’ve complained about these idiot twits before and I’ll keep complaining about them until I can get rid of them. The dorks filter port 25 so I can only use their SMTP server to send email from home. It’s down. So now I can’t send email. My own server is up but I can’t use that server. Their answer: Upgrade to a business account and pay $109.95 a month for simple cable modem service. And they argue with you. God, I hate Cablevisision. So let’s get this into Google: CABLEVISION SUCKS CABLEVISION SUCKS. CABLEVISION SUCKS. CABLEVISION SUCKS. CABLEVISION SUCKS. CABLEVISION SUCKS. Well, you get the idea.

: I don’t believe it. I just finish ranting and the damned cable signal starts going, too. ARRRGGGGHHHHHHH!

Please, bring me ubiquitous wireless broadband. Please, bring me fiber to the door. Please, bring me internet over power lines. Anything but this!

    lol, too funny. I used to work for Cablevision about 10 years ago. They were a bunch of twits then and it appears nothing has changed.

    Get a fastmail.fm account for sending email. They support SSL-based SMTP which uses a higher-numbered port and is probably not blocked. Or subscribe to a VPN service like HotSpotVPN.com that will let you VPN out to their network operator center, from where you can send email to your SMTP server directly. (It’s a tunnel.)
    Neither solution is expense. Fastmail.fm is $40 per year for their enhanced account with 2 Gb storage, SSL POP, etc., etc. HotSpotVPN.com is $8.88 per month. Their PPTP-based VPN works under Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3, Windows XP and other versions of the OS, and presumably Linux with a PPTP client.

    Jeff, Cablevision has sucked for over a quarter-century. It’s just that now with the explosion of communication options, they have a myriad of additional things to suck at than just crappy signals and lousy channel selection of the late 1970s.
    ..and then of course there’s the Knicks and Rangers.

    Cablevision refused to wire much of the Bronx for cable for a long time; it took them forever to finally arrive with service where my parents lived and when they did, they refused to wire the block that my parents lived on but surrounding blocks had cable.
    I hope they rot in hell.

    I have the same situation with Cox. They block Port 80 (servers) and Port 25 (smtp email). If Cablevision is like Cox their business service is actually slower, even though they have no port blockages, and you pay more.
    Get a local friendly geek to show you how to use SSH to “tunnel” through the blockage using a command line. This is also handy when you’re on the road and need to send mail through some random home’s open wi-fi connection. You won’t be able to speak SMTP to your mail server through them, either. But if you can ssh tunnel to your server (not possible in all cases, but in most), you’re home free.

    I ran into the same on a Monday morning a few months back. They didn’t even alert their customers as a courtesy. Unacceptable! Their iO service is pretty bad as well. Half the time I can’t call up Da Ali G Show when I want. Why roll out a technology when it doesn’t work?

    I still laugh about the cableco (is it for Cablevision or Comcast?) commercial running in the New York area that has the woman singing the blues about how her previous ISP would say that it was obviously her computer when the Internet wasn’t working in her house, and that the cableco didn’t do that. Yeah, right.

    Anyone still using their local cable monopoly instead of DirecTV deserves as much sympathy as anyone still living under Communism after the Berlin Wall fell.

    I’d have to agree. I’m paying out the nose for cable Internet because I don’t have cable television (due to DirecTV). But it’s the fastest option, so what can you do.

    I have Comcast, which has rewired my place for high-speed access, but that was months ago and they still claim it’s not available in my area. But if you say that CABLEVISION SUCKS, I’ll believe that CABLEVISION SUCKS. We may disagree about some things, but you know the industry. So if you say that CABLEVISION SUCKS, that’s good enough for me.
