Read Rosen

: I don’t have time to quote it in detail, so just go read Jay Rosen today on the proper aftermath and analysis of what’s really happening in blogs-vs-media vs. blogs-with-media.

Be sure to check out Doug Kern’s then-and-now comparison — at Tech Central Station — between Martin Luther’s sixteenth-century trust busting of the Catholic Church’s monopoly on “truth” and the Pajamasphere’s similar trust busting of the MSM’s monopoly today: Here I blog, I can do no other

I’ll tell you the real fallout from the incessant ankle biting of bloggers on the MSM. The Globe and Mail in Canada has put its columnists behind a subscription only firewall. The clear message: If bloggers want to continue their ankle biting they’re going to have to pay for it. They did this about a month ago and since then, I haven’t seen one “fisking” of a Globe and Mail columnist.
Congratulations. You’re succeeding in forcing the MSM to take steps to prevent constant harrassment and in doing so are cutting all bloggers off from the material they need.

For another historical view, take a look at Guardian Watchblog, Sep 16, “The Fall of the Media Empire.

People living through turning points of history have rarely been able to see them for what they were at the time. It has mostly taken a backward look to discover the historical significance of this or that occurrence. Until recently, only hindsight could tell us which events were the hinge points of history.
When historians look back on the year 2004, they will identify 9 September as one of those hinge points.

    Robert,
considering the paying customers “on the street” almost don’t exist in the “under 30” crowd, it’s either going to be a heavier focus on ad revenues online or paid access for almost all online publications in the future…

    Robert,
If they want to hide their words online behind a paid-admission curtain, then their words online will be ignored. Big deal. Others will fill the void.

    Others will fill the void.
Yes, no nothings like Ann Coulter and her lefty counterpoint will fill the void. Try blogging to Ann’s beat some time. The point is that the MSM will take steps to counter these ridiculous attacks* and blogging will pay the price.
*I say ridiculous attacks because while some legitimate fact checking of the media does take place, most of what is going on is nothing less that pathetic whining over ridiculous nonsense. (ie. Oh my gawd! They used scare quotes! Scare quotes I tells ya! For that they must die!)

When I visited Robert McClelland’s blog today, I was struck by his message in large, red letters: “DON’T BELIEVE THE RIGHT WHINGER’S BULL****” — although Robert didn’t use asterisks. I’m left wondering if this is his reasoned, nuanced alternative to the “ridiculous attacks” he mentioned in his Buzz-Machine comments. Also in those comments, Robert complained about right-wing, “pathetic whining about ridiculous nonsense.” That put me in the right frame of mind to read Robert’s post about the President’s whereabouts immediately after the 9-11 attack. Robert wrote:
“Once it became clear that America was indeed under attack from hostile forces, it should also have become clear that the President of the United States had become a prime target for an attack. So the real issue is that he remained in the school for far longer than those 5 minutes–most accounts of the day say Bush didn’t leave the school until 9:35am, a full half hour after he was alerted to the second WTC strike–and in doing so, endangered the lives of hundreds of children and teachers. The real issue is not his unresponsiveness to the situation but his complete disregard for the innocent lives that surrounded him; a trait that Bush has repeatedly demonstrated during his presidency.”
I hadn’t even worried about that particular election issue. Thanks for bringing it up, Robert.
