Issues2004: What else

Issues2004: What else

: I’m continuing to write the Issues2004 posts but the time has come to ask you what issues we should include. See a list of what I’ve covered over on the right and the posts here. Those are most of my hot buttons (though not all… still need to grapple with the econmy, for example). But I want to know what you think I should cover. I don’t promise to cover them. And it doesn’t matter a bit whether I do; this is the farthest thing from an authoritative list. But it is yielding good discussion of issues — instead of mud — and so what are the other issues we should be discussing in this campaign?

    Social Security.

    Immigration

Oil for Food crisis and Kofi Annan & Son involvement. Should this scandal be more in the press?

    Additional issues:
    Israel-Palestine
    Gay marriage
    Immigration (seconding Mike)

The top two would be Social Security and immigration. Another worthy topic would be foreign trade which includes issues like off-shore outsourcing (and its mirror-image—companies in other countries outsourcing to the United States). Please, please don’t cover the social issues. Discourse does not appear possible on them.

Da deficit, baby! And health care and/or health insurance costs.

Trade – which I think is a huge difference between the two candidates.
One other thing I’d like to see thrown out there, which may not be an issue per se but bears a great deal of weight on the platform of both parties: the conflict of special interests/groups within both parties.
Republicans: small government vs. religious right.
Democrats: labor vs. environmental, hawks vs. doves.

I know jack about nanotech. And I feel as if I’ll never catch up. So can you write a primer post on the issues?

I’ll second (and third) Social Security. I’ll add the Environment too. I’ve had it with mercury in my fish!

Social Security would be my first choice.
Foreign policy issues by region or country would also be useful. What should be done about Iran, Syria, N. Korea, China/Taiwan, Russia, India/Pakistan, etc?
More boring, but still important issues might be the future of U.S. monetary policy and what changes to the tax code are needed.

Funny you should mention that, petetheelder. I just kvetched about China not being mentioned in the first presidential debate.

The issue of immigration touches many other issues, including social security and homeland security.
For instance, Bush is trying to give social security to illegal aliens. Price tag: hundreds of billions of dollars.
And, why does the Bush administration release illegals from terrorist-sponsoring countries into the U.S.?
And, why does the Bush administration allow foreign agents to travel around the U.S. passing out ID cards that the FBI and the DOJ call a security threat?
