Civics class

Civics class

: My kid’s school scheduled back-to-school night tonight. Great timing. So I’ll be late watching the debate. Tell me what happens….

: UPDATE: Thanks to my diligent commenters, the reviews are already in. I don’t even have to bother watching the tape tonight:

Let’s see…

The Dems think Kerry won.

The Repubs think Bush won.

Old media agrees with the Dems.

Talk-radio agrees with the Repubs.

The pajama-wearing ankle-biters are divided over who won, but really defend their positions well.

Michael Moore is a jackass.

That pretty much covers it.

The “debate” should be a fascinating exercise in giving a speech while sitting at a table and not being able to address your adversary.
Geez, Jeff – no TiVo? =)

What about the media/ moderator? Any issue about question bias?
    Who has the funnier jokes?
    Best looking smile?
Most serious demeanor on the serious questions?
Does anybody know what Kerry’s plan for Iraq is, now?

But I read someplace that Bush and Kerry don’t even get to directly ask each other questions. So basically we’ll be hearing the two of them drone on like automatons the same stuff they’ve been saying for the past month. What’s the point of watching? It’s not like any new ground will be attained. It’s not like anyone is going to change his/her mind because of these debates…

    What happened (ahead of time):
    Kerry mentioned Vietnam.
    Bush stumbled over several words.
Kerry became brittle and indignant before reverting to pompous and self-important.
Bush tried to aw-shucks his way out of a bad answer.
Kerry kept talking after the buzzer rang.
Bush kept waiting for the buzzer after talking.
Kerry finally explained his position on Iraq (no, wait, he’ll clear that up in the post-debate interview)
Only the moderator used complete and coherent sentences.

As usual Jarvis you are always late…don’t you know the debates happened already:
    The Associated Press
CORAL GABLES, Fla. Sept. 30, 2004

I can “Lewis Lapham” the debates: Kerry is surging, the race is tightening, Kerry is on the comeback trail! Two reasons for this narrative – the press wants Kerry to win (see Evan Thomas) and the press loves a horserace, and it’s difficult to have a race if one of the horses is dead. So unless Kerry physically assaults GWB, the above will be what we will be reading tomorrow.
