Is stress caused by those absurd Met Life optimal weight figures one of the major causes? I just heard that stuff from my doctor, he told me what my optimal weight for my height was and I said “Can you get me a month in a concentration camp?” I was skinny once and I was a 36″ waist. That IS skinny for me, son of sturdy German farm stock that I am. 34″ is not right for every man, and it’s as harmful to say an impossibility like that is the ideal as it is to say that every woman needs to look like Kate Moss or she’s a fat cow.
This kind of thing cracks me up! According to the risk figures (20% more likely to die by age, etc. etc.) I should have died 27 years BEFORE I WAS BORN.
So-o-o I take it these scientists are fighting hand-to-hand with the “We’ve found the smoking gene, the alchoholic gene, the diabetes gene, etc.” scientists. It always comes down to a Nature vs. Nurture slugfest.
My wife is an RN on a telemetry unit (the heart monitor floor), and thus sees tons of cardiac problems on a daily basis. To hear her tell it, the number one overriding risk is (drum roll please) family history. She can tell stories all day long about old geezers who lived the hard life, doing everything they weren’t supposed to, finally brought to heel by a bad case of pneumonia or some such at the ripe old age of 90. On the flip side, she tells me story after story about some guy 10 years my junior with a bad ticker, who invariably has no male relatives over the age of 55.
The way I see it, the number one cause of death is being born. Since I’m already a victim of that, I’m going to enjoy myself, and to hell with the nanny docs. Everything in moderation, nothing in extreme, and I think I’ll be just fine.
Hmmm, interesting list. Regardless if it is your heart or not something eventually is going to put you down. Might as well be hedonism.
Jeff – I think it’s waist 44″ for men, not 34″
Sam, that would make more sense. But the story says 85 cm and here’s the conversion:
85 Centimeters equals 33.4646 Inches
Maybe we found where in NASA-JPL guys who screwed the English-Metric conversion on a Mars lander found work.
