Bon Appetit

Bon Appetit

: If PBS had any class, they’d preempt all their programming for a day — say, tomorrow — to run 24 hours of Julia Child, who brought taste to America and class to PBS and fun to Saturday Night Live. Instead, my PBS station was running frigging infomericals for painting kits this morning.

: Here’s Julie’s tribute to Julia.

Psst – it is the beginning of August. It is fund raising week. Lots of Suze Orman, Yanni, Wayne Dyer, Nat King Cole, 50’s Oldies Shows and Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell. Julia never had a chance against the money machine.

Psst. That’s your idea of class.
    It’s my idea of yawn.
Kinda quick to jump on the criticizing there, too. They’ve probably got something in the works. It’s not like there’s a huge hurry – or desire. Maybe a little time to prpmote the Child Marathon would benefit people – you know, so they know it’s on.
    Classs. Pft. Whatever.

Call me a crank, but I’m fed to the teeth with the Julie/Julia project. It’s a moderately amusing gimmick but Julie’s not a wonderful writer, or even an adequate one and she doesn’t have any riveting new insights on food, cooking or life. I hope the book sinks like a stone. Julia Child was an original and Salon’s lil blogger/cook is not.

    You’re a crank.

My being a crank doesn’t make Julie/Julia less vapid. She’ll be back being a secretary after the launch.

Amen. Yes, it’s fundraising season, but if PBS had run a Julia Child memorial marathon then I might have actually watched some of their pledge drive.
I’ll never understand they way they spend most of their time talking up how great their shows are, but when it’s time to beg money they preempt the shows people like with tedious “specials” and thinly disguised commercials. That and they screw up my Tivo’s scheduling. (Then again, I’ve never forgiven MPT for taking off The Woodwright’s Shop four years ago, so I tend to hold a grudge.)

Some PBS stations are airing an American Masters program on Julia Childs Wednesday night which originally was going to be on next year.
Unfortunately, my PBS station, KQED (which has done shows with Childs), is repeating Dr. Wayne Dwyer pledge dreck.
