Exploding TV

: MarketWatch’s Bambi Francisco speculates that Yahoo will (or should) start online reality TV or sports channels.

Didn’t they spend a fortune on Broadcast.com and then kill it?

But Francisco’s not wrong. Times have changed. Yahoo would be positioned to start original programming. It is thick with entertainment execs — Terry Semel, Jim Moloshok (who was just shifted full-time to the business of entertainment). And, as I’ve been blathering here for sometime, the cost of production is plummeting at the same time that traditional networks are starting venture into starting online networks. Lines blur. Opportunities emerge.

Want to start a reality show? Do it on your own. Then get distribution on Yahoo. The same goes for radio shows. Even blogs….

    So many navel-gazing personal blogs are exactly like reality shows to me, except without video. I know I’m not the only one who has an entire stash of cringe-blogs that provide pure, shameless entertainment. So it’s already happening, but with no centralised direction or video feeds.

    Jeff, though I agree where you’re going with this, “Exploding TV” is not a novel concept. I mean, maybe the phrase is novel, I don’t know…
    But as a business, Television has not been able to deliver what people wanted/what it promised for what, two decades? Three?
    People have been trying to do the “TV offers quality, if one is selective” horseshit for as long as I’ve been an adult (pushing 20 years). It started with PBS, moved on to Cable etc.
    It’s a lie. Sex & The City might be good, The Sopranos might be good… but it ain’t Tolstoy or Conrad or Goethe or Shakespeare.
    Intellectually honest conversations about TV is impossible. Just like intellectually-honest conversation about the semi-daily need to be in a vegetated state is impossible.
    The medium is the massage etc.

    Yahoo are no more or less qualified than any big business to run a TV channel. In the next three or four years, we’ll get to a place where anyone with cash can easily set up an international TV channel with worldwide distribution – but only a very number of tiny organisation will have the vision to do it wisely. Whatever makes you think Yahoo would have the vision just because they’ve hired a few execs?
    The cost of production may be plummeting, but the cost of talent is as high as ever.
