Another Cannes winner!
: Heiko Hebig sent me this. He made it into a quiz on his site; I couldn’t resist going straight to the punchline. This is an ad for the German tabloid Bild and, just like Michael Moore, it won an award in Cannes (this one the Cannes Lion ad contest; go to page 2, bottom right).
The Cannes Film Festival and The Cannes Ad Awards are not affiliated with each other, as far as I know. At least the juries aren’t the same people.
I have yet to enter my first award show, so somebody more informed than me can set the record straight.
Sadly for the young’uns dreaming of one day winning awards in the biz, the goalposts have changed.
I think it’s a good ad. It’s very “European”, certainly. When I was younger I thought European ads were superior to US ads. I no longer think that.. Europeans advertising generally lacks the Cluetrain schtck.
It’s a powerful ad, too.
I thought about putting it on my desktop, but then thought about how a friend of mine at work who has a husband serving in Iraq might be sensitive to it. Just a little too close to reality.
