The real question is: Why did Bod Edwards last so long after the Age of the Dinosuars ended? Was he a better dinosaur? Let’s send his chair to the Smithsonian for storage in the great vault of hot air and inane thought. Neither the miniscule remnant of NPR listeners nor the fans of people they never met or listened to will miss him. Is America better after Cronkite went off the air? Yes!!! and it will go on to better things after Edwards is off the air. The republic will prosper and civilization will not end. The jet engine has replaced the 4 cylinder on line that replaced the horse and buggy. RIP Bob Edwards. Thank you and goodbye.

    “miniscule remnant of NPR listeners…”
    What??
Morning Edition has around 13 million listeners, more than Stern or Imus. Its audience has grown 41% in the past 5 years. That’s a lot of people listening to that dinosaur.

Just because millions of children visit the museums to see their carcasses and read books about them, and make drawings of them, it does not mean they are alive. NPR (Bob Edwards) and Imus and Stern live in different periods and a flat comparison of audience numbers might be a good thing but it also implies a bad statistical presumption as well as bad science. Within a potential audience of 100 million we can say that a 10% share is minimal unless we are into “progressive” statistics where everybody is a winner (aka whiner). Moreover, most of the audience is not listening. We use the radio as sound curtain to filter noise just like a fountain, a waterfall or a CD of “nature sounds”. Sorry if this sounds “hateful” and “unkind” rather than peace loving but I live in a dinosaur temple and the bone piles have become rather irritating.

If he’s so great, why doesn’t he just take his show to another radio station, or find another network? If it’s that great, and he that big a following, he should easily bring in the sponsors. Or is there something about him and his show that only allows him to appear on publicly funded, government run stations?
