Pork for all? That’s Bush’s slogan, ain’t it?
Beats me why the Muslims are agitating against the French decree when it’s just one more law added to the litany of laws by which Muslims live. Like this:
1. Face Mecca to pray five times a day
2. Call Jews and Christians apes and monkeys and pigs
3. Make jihad for the sake of Allah against Jews and Christians who reject Islam
4. Train young men and women to become human bombs to kill Jews; leave Christians for later
5. No hijab in public; she’s looking to be raped
6. No religous beard; he’s an apostate, so kill him
7. Let accusation for rape stand against a man only if there are four witnesses to the event
8. Stone a woman if she’s raped and bears a child out of wedlock
9. Spread the flag of Islam by stealth until the numbers of Muslims increase; once the numbers of Muslims increase, make jihad for the sake of Allah and kill all the infidel dogs, monkeys, apes, and pigs
10. Teach that women are the root and source of evil and catastrophe; teach young men they don’t need to control themselves
So what’s one more rule?
mailto:hari@krishna.com, huh?
No comment. Well, I do have a comment, but I doubt Mr. Jarvis here would be pleased to host it. Basically–continuing on the route of bigotry you opened here–what about the Caste system and Sati, you uninformed .
uninformed <expletive>
Ok, I couldn’t resist.
1. Face Mecca to pray five times a day
You have a problem with that? I’d be proud if I could pull it off.
2. Call Jews and Christians apes and monkeys and pigs
Well, no, they’re humans. Cite please.
3. Make jihad for the sake of Allah against Jews and Christians who reject Islam
Jews and Christians do reject Islam, don’t they–that’s why they’re Jews and Christians, last time I checked. Please tell me how many Jihad declarations are in effect right now? Yeah, exactly, places where the Muslims are squelched by the mighty thumb of politics (Palestine, Kashmir)
4. Train young men and women to become human bombs to kill Jews; leave Christians for later
Don’t be silly. Suicide is a high sin.
5. No hijab in public; she’s looking to be raped
???
6. No religous beard; he’s an apostate, so kill him
Cite?
7. Let accusation for rape stand against a man only if there are four witnesses to the event
Don’t know about that one. Please point to a place in the Quran or Hadiths that says that.
8. Stone a woman if she’s raped and bears a child out of wedlock
Not really; it’s stone a woman if she’s had sex outside of marriage (rape doesn’t count). I’m fundamentally opposed to execution though, and that’s a valid criticism of Sharia’a.
9. Spread the flag of Islam by stealth until the numbers of Muslims increase; once the numbers of Muslims increase, make jihad for the sake of Allah and kill all the infidel dogs, monkeys, apes, and pigs
???
10. Teach that women are the root and source of evil and catastrophe; teach young men they don’t need to control themselves
You know that’s not true. Killing female babies was a common practice amongst Saudi tribes until Islam spread. For god’s sake, women give you birth, man!
As for the young men not to control themselves = patently false. When I was in Saudi Arabia, guys got flogged for whistling at women. Sad and unjust, but there goes your theory out the window.
It worked for Ataturk in Turkey. He banned “Islamic dress” as part of his program to make Turkey a secular, modern state.
hari based on the vitriol from Firas i guess you cut to close to the bone. someone needs to open their eyes and try to cut through the BS PC world they obviously live in.
Firas is a moderate muslim–he just pretends that stuff doesn’t exist–makes him feel better when he chants islam is peace.
Only Kashmir and Palestine–what a crock of camel dooey! Ambon,Kosovo, Armenia, Sudan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Lebanon,Kashmir, Philippines,
Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Algeria, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Iran – there is hardly a Muslim country that is not plagued by terrorism.
Folks: no-one should pretend that the contemporary Muslim world doesn’t have its cultural issues and nasty elements to contend with, but really. The blanket Islamophobia on display here is pretty reminiscent of anti-Semitism in enough ways that the stuff coming out of your mouths (or off your keyboards) should really be giving you pause. It’s like pointing out the Gush Emunim as an excuse to scream “Jews are evil!” Respect for Muslims aside, show some self-respect.
As regards the story itself: good to see some people in France are finally starting to grok the absurdity of all this. Maybe it will be enough to rein the ludicrous headscarves debate in a little bit. Perhaps it’s too much to hope that it will kill the law itself, which was really a sop to far rightists like Le Pen.
angell: you miss the point. There are 1.2 billion Muslims on the planet today (at least). The amount of Islam hate you guys spew is crazy, given that you’re immersed in a Muslim world.
I am a Nigerian christian who attended a French school. My experience with pro-sharia Nigerian muslims and with the “secularised” French school system makes me conclude that their ideologies are equally intolerant and absurd.
Once I was sick, and wore a sweatshirt to school. “Faith” was written over the left breast,in smallish print. Even though precious few students (or teachers) knew enough English to understand this, I was ordered to take it off when my principal saw me. He accused me of being intolerant, and shoving my God down everyone’s throat. I also got in trouble for refusing to eat cafeteria meat during lent.
Now, don’t get me wrong; I am a man of faith, but I believe in the separation of C & S, and respect and tolerance. However, it goes both ways, and that’s what the French secularists fail to grasp. People of faith have rights, and can get offended too. Freedom of religion is considered a “fundamental right” in France as well. These measures impede it.
Firas–I am not immersed in a muslim world–I will Never be immersed in a muslm world–they can believe what they want, but they can not shove it at me. I will never excuse murder in the name of a sick culture. All I ask is for these moderate muslims to pop out and start condemning the 150,000,000 fanatics –till then I have no respect for people who condone murder. People like CAIR and hate mongering mullahs.
I live in North America–it will NEVER be a muslim world–get used to that!! Maybe you should tell muslims that the majority of the world is on-muslims–and THEY should get used to THAT!!
Angell: heh. “I live in North America–it will NEVER be a muslim world”
How many things do you touch that are Muslim made, angell? How many words do you read that are Muslim written? Why are you so intent in your denial?
Let’s start off with a short list. Do you use,
1) The arabic numeral system (1, 2, 3..)
2) Petrol
3) Operating systems, the internet, etc.
However, it goes both ways, and that’s what the French secularists fail to grasp.
Yes, certainly it’s an abuse of the principle of public secularism (which is perfectly sound) to use it to police the way your citizens dress. Public secularism should be about how the government represents itself, not about what scarves, t-shirts or jewelry the citizenry decide to wear.
I don’t even know that the issue is secularism vs. religion per se. It’s really about the use of secularism as an excuse to pass laws targeting an ethnicity. I mean, Chirac was canny enough to include crosses and skullcaps in the ban to make it more palatable across the board, but it’s no secret which group is going to be most affected by it. This was pandering to the far right, and it’s hard to put that genie back in the bottle once it’s been opened.
no, the Arabs got the number system from Indians that they oppressed and attacked trying to force India to islam. So I thank the Indians for the number system. Only thing Arabs have invented in the last hundreds of years is suicide bombers, suicide vests, and world wide terrorism. They have to send their killers to western countries to learn to fly planes. If it weren’t for the west, they would not have a clue what to do with the petrol or the internet.
Actually, Dr Slack, I think it is the other way round. Chirac and the other “Neo-Ferrys”, as I call them, were banking that the growing anti-islamic sentiment would reduce public dissent on this issue, enabling them to suppress the rel thing they detest: the expression of religion.
These people’s fundamental issue with religion is their belief that the religious are damning them in their hearts. The possibility that their worldview is based on an error is as frightening to them as it is to the average televangelist who is ridiculed by our sophisticated society. They have inherited the psychological baggage of their ideological forbears, who lived in a world where religion held sway, and were thus persecuted. Secularism has won, but try telling it to the secularists. They still think they are fighting for survival, and their resultant hostility has ironically mutated into persecution of the religious.
So I thank the Indians for the number system.
Good. Your civilization owes me :p

Ehhh, I think you’re probably attributing too much of an ideological agenda to Chirac on the issue. Chirac’s main concern seems to me to be staying in office (the pan-religious addition was a political move to make it seem less like racist legislation); if he has larger concerns they don’t appear to relate to religion one way or other.
The reason I alleged that secularism is a screen for the far right on the issue is that Chirac’s law was stolen pretty much wholesale from Jean-Marie Le Pen’s 2002 election platform. The “secularism” of the French far right is really a codeword for a breed of virulently anti-immigrant, Islamophobic ultranationalism IMO.
There is no doubt that the french +right is guilty of acute xenophobia and specifically of anti-islamic sentiment. JMLP is obviously at the vanguard of this, but Sept 11 is the only reason he came so close to the Champs-Elysees last time around. This is a more recent fear, compounded, as you pointed out, by increased immigration. Secularism long precedes this. This is merely one of its current guises, and actually its best justification, as recent terror is pitched to the public as a consequence of religion.
It frightens me just a little that I just found myself agreeing completely with Dr Slack.

Heh. Not to worry, I’ve a feeling I won’t be frightening you too often. Thanks, though.
Andy: yes, I suppose that’s a fair assessment.
