The end of free
: The last free Julie Burchill column here. Now she moves to The Times, which charges. She should convince her new masters to let her start a weblog and put up her columns.

“Let” her? She should start one on her own! Then we’ll see if she can really sink or swim in the Blog Ocean.

I think the money’s better with weekly columns than daily blogs, somehow. The barriers to entry are far greater, that’s for sure. That is both a strength and a weakness.
Certainly in middle class Britain, you get to a certain age, you scrap the Guardian and start reading The Times. I think Julie’s pulled the journo equivalent. -
Hmmm. That column was the journalistic equivalent of that guy who made a record full of powertools to fufill his recording contract.

Totally baffled! I have absolutely NO idea– not even a slight clue– why you think so highly of her.

She is well-regarded in the Biritsh Press as being ahead of her time in the crass, in your face, smart, working class chick with attitude, journo type. Sure, her type are a dime-a-dozen now, but way-back-when she broke a lot of ice.
I think she got her start writing about punk rock in the 70s for the music press, back when women writing about music at all was pretty rare, let alone punk. -
She’s really hit or miss and this last column of hers is a miss, by a lot. She was a fan of the Soviets in Afghanistan? I don’t think I’ll be paying to read her.
