The democracy doctrine
: Matthew Stinson points to a Jonah Goldberg column that endorses an idea I discussed a few weeks ago: The democracy doctrine. Goldberg suggests a League of Democracies would compete with the U.N. I prefer to think we’d lead.

I’ve been saying this same thing on all kinds of Blogs since 9/11, though League of Democracies rings better than my United Free Nations.
Membership requirements would have to include, at the least, democractic representation, freedom of speech and religion, and capitalism & free trade. Headquarters should be in San Francisco, a geographic contrast to the UN in NYC (unless of course we throw the UN out, in which case we’ve go the diggs all ready). -
This thing already exists — it’s called the Community of Democracies, and it was founded in the late 1990s by Madeleine Albright. Only her version, unlike Goldberg’s, “didn’t propose creating a new institution with its own bureaucracy, building, and letterhead.” (from “Madam Secretary”).
