And the winner is… oh, nevermind
: A big confession from a former TV critic: I didn’t watch the Emmys last night. I was curious instead to see whether I could figure out whether I liked Carnivale (it was a hung jury; now it’s a hanging jury). I figured I’d watch the Emmys on tape. But reading the lists of the reputed winners in today’s paper, I don’t think I’ll bother because in our ever-more-nichefied media world, the Emmys are a mass-market, three-networks-fits-all holdover. They are ever-more irrelvant. Well, of course, all awards are essentially irrelevant, but the Emmys are moreso simply because with my remote control and personal recording device, every night is an awards show at my house. And the Emmys don’t account for Trading Spaces or Queer Eye or Howard Stern or certainly FoxNews. Prime time just isn’t prime time anymore.

I should hate Carnivale – that sort of weird-for-weirndess’ sake portentious mumbo-jumbo tricked up with art direction usually makes my teeth hurt, but I love the show.
It’s probably going to be the most intensely religious show ever put on TV, too. Good news: there is a God! Bad news: He appears to have repealed the New Testament. -
I love it too. It has the best danged opening credits, though, which are worth watching alone.
Always the danger of symbols being crashed about your ears – but not too bad, yet. -
Am still on the fence about Carnivale. I want to like it, but I can’t say that I really do yet. Same goes for K Street.
The Emmys did have a reality show award this year. So I think both Queer Eye and Trading Spaces could have been considered for nomination. FoxNews, et. al. was signalled out by Jon Stewart rather admirably last night, as well. -
Canrivale is brilliant. The Wire was the best realistic drama ever on television. Carnivale is shaping up to to be the best fantasy ever done on TV.
It was nice to see that the Daily Show won an award. Don’t forget that he also did a really funny thing making fun of Howard Dean before the FoxNews bit. -

That was BBC America, on Saturday night: “The Second Coming” it was called. God said: “screw you lot, we’re leaving!” -
Queer Eye is a great, well-produced show, but I’m starting to fast-forward now and again. Kyan’s increasingly strident hectorings about pre-shave oil and hair “product” are getting boring, and the shoe-horning of Jai into various sections is not working for me. I wish the show all the best, but it needs to be careful. Personally, I think they should have a new cast for next season.

I think the Simpsons proved the Emmys irrelevent. They couldn’t get nominated for Best Comedy because they were animated.

Worth noting: Tony Shaloub won an award for his work on Monk and it was well-deserved. I didn’t want to watch the show because I expected it to make me uncomfortable about watching somone in severe distress due to mental illness. But I caught a peek and watched him in it a couple of times, and he did a good job with a very difficult situation.

Wow, Anthony. Way to go! Whatta weblog. Even the blogroll is awesome. That’s quite an accomplishment for a 22 year-old. How long have you been working on it– since you’re 11, right?! Just kidding. Very impressive, really. When I first started surfing at the local public library, sometimes 11 yr old kids would help me and they were very good!
