I’ve been covering this story non-stop over at Command Post since it broke. I’ve been dismayed at how little play it’s getting on both television and in print.
This is a big deal. The targets were American. How does that make it different than a terror attack on our own soil, which would get far more coverage?
I’ve had a hard time getting updates and casualty numbers. It’s hard to even find a good quote besides the usual Colin Powell sound bites.
Have we dismissed al Qaida to the extent that we are shrugging this off as them grasping at straws? Or does the death toll have to reach thousands before the media treats it as major news?

Come on! Can’t you all see it – Laci Peterson, Bill Bennett, taxes, judges, Dems vs. Repubs. The media is done with the WoT, Iraq was it for them. Now it’s back to pre-Sept 11th media whoring….until something blows up here. After that it’s “Bush has failed us” non-stop until November 2004.

INRE: Have we dismissed Al Qaeda…?
Their website Al Neda is now stashed inside a Home Remodeling Company’s website. I just blogged a weird item about this a few days ago, titled ‘Alfred Hitchcock…’ It’s kind of hard to take such an outfit too seriously.
I agree they are still a threat. And more attention needs to paid to them operating in a clandestine role.

So, according to Glenn, we are safer now because mass deaths are no longer shocking?
I’d say we are now becoming accustomed to these tragedies, Israeli model, and that is no good thing.

    well ya know america
    always gets a little odd
about anything to do with saudi arabia
maybe it’s just the big ass reminder
that everything bad thats happened to us
    has links to the saudis
but we need to keep calling them pals
    cause we need their oil
or maybe the baby bush just didn’t want to take the focus away
    from him time spent
    patting himself on the back

Turtles fighting over a turd in the toilet of a restroom in an abandoned gas station.
Jarvis, you’re approaching new levels of unimportance (though admittedly you’re still miles ahead of Chuck the Little Green Dupe and that hideous old slag michele).
Stick to the celebrity gossip, it’s what you know.

I’ve always assumed that al Qaida attacks in Arab countries were deliberately intended to provoke a huge, repressive reaction by the ruling regime, at the urging of the US. This would then drive moderates in the country even further into anti-American positions, destabilizing regimes that al Qaida feels are too America-friendly.
If that’s correct, the relatively low play this story is getting is a good thing, a refusal to play the terrorists’ game. This is not a good time to be forcing the Saudi government into action that may be perceived as repressive.
