The reason why

The reason why
: Rumsfeld summed up the real goal of this war:

Saddam Hussein is now taking his rightful place alongside Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Ceausescu in the pantheon of failed brutal dictators and the Iraqi people are well on their way to freedom.

let’s see about this freedom (and liberty and democraty) a couple of months from now – the US have fought quite a few wars in the last 50 years, without ever bringing democracy and freedom to a country that didn’t have it before..
and how about the collateral damage? no i’m not talking about dead civilians, i’m talking about the status of the USA as a unilateral warmongering country that doesn’t give a shit about anybody else. well done mr.rumsfeld et. al.

Oh, put a sock in it, Andreas, and just rejoice in the sight of a people being liberated.

yeah right, liberated. i just pray that Bush and his cronies never try to liberate my homecountry…

Do you feel that east Germany is worse off today than it was under the Soviet Union, before the United States won the Cold War?

    Andreas:
Guess Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and fascist Italy were all role model democracies? As far as waging war goes the Iraqis violated the armistice accords and brought the war on themselves. I will not take your recommendations regarding war because I remember what happened to the Czechs and Poles. Suicide is not an attractive course of action nor is it a reasonable one. If your homeland can’t protect itself than thats tough titty. You deserve what warmongers have in store for you. I love this administration’s balls. Its about time we got rid of the UN and Nato. We should then take care of the French and Canadians.

My resolution for the week: don’t argue with Europeans. They’re all just bitter at how impotent they are, and so they’ll just carp at what has been done today.
Of course, I’m only referring to Old Europe.

  8. Andrea Harris Avatar

Yeah, Andreas, if we “liberate” your country, then you might have to actually work for a living instead of being a socialist parasite. Boo hoo.

it’s funny how many ‘educated’ comments one can get if you dissent with the bush doctrine…
@poot: you don’t really want to compare the cold war to current military actions in the middle east?
@thomas: german and italy had free elections before 1933, the japanese were also quite happy with their emperor until 33 – nuking hiroshima and nagasaki might have ended the war but it’s nothing one should be proud of. and what about korea, vietnam, panama, somalia all the others?
@mike: i’m part of the old europe and i don’t even know what it means to be bitter. i’m just saddened how backward some people still think at the beginning of the 21st century.
@andrea: you sure seem to know a lot about me..
well, after that posting i already know that you are an ignoramus, go buy yourself a clue.

@cj: too bad you don’t know your history and ignore the facts:
And Saddam was relected by 100% of the voters
    i wrote free elections.
also, i didn’t defend the japanese emperor and especially prime minister hideki, they messed up big time after ’33. still no reason to deploy weapons of mass destruction…
concerning the other u.s. military involvements: the original question of those wasn’t about legitimacy but about outcome, i.e. bringing peace and democracy to these countries.
the ability to read is a clear advantage.

as an east-german i am deeply offended if you americans suggest to have liberated us. have some history lessons. we liberated ourselves in 89 and we are proud of this.

I”‘m just saddened how backward some people still think at the beginning of the 21st century.”
Tres sophisticated, Andreas! Yes, those backward Iraqis celebrating the destruction of a tyrant! How much more grownup it would all be if they only understood that the unilateralism of the unjust occupation of their country means that they are not as free as if Saddam was still crushing them, with the support of Chirac, the UN, TotalFinaElf and other world bodies so much more mature than the US Army.
If that is NOT what your absurd statement means, I’d like to know what you did mean by it.

Hey Kris, c’mon. You’ve got to admit the U.S. helped just a little bit. (It was called the Cold War and guess who won.)

  16. Andreas Avatar

@mike: trying to solve issues with military action and violence, and trampling over your friends and alliances, that’s what i call backward thinking.

  17. kris Avatar

but in contrast to all you big mouth couch generals here in this blog who claim that they liberated iraq from the safety of their laptops i was actively involved back then. so, please, don’t tell me it was your effort.

    Dearest kris;
I am a student of military history. please enlighten this student on how east germany liberated itself. I am aware of the Cold War, deployment of missles, economic pressures brought on the former USSR. I am simply ignorant of organized east german resistance.
This is not a flame. I would like to know your view of this. I will tell you that, most americans feel that, WE DID`HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH FREEING EASTERN EUROPE”. If you can explain to me how this is wrong, I will be the first to admit and thank you for educating me.
    Respectfully

The East Germans who didn’t flee to the West were too busy spying on each other to do much liberating, Danjo. Except for Kris and friends, of course. They brought down the wall all by themselves. 45 years of American will, power and money had nothing to do with it.
I guess Americans aren’t the only ones who need to be educated about recent history.

  20. kris Avatar

sorry, i was wrong. i am so ignorant. of course, it was ronald reagan who shouted “mr. gorbachev, tear down this wall!” sorry again. and sorry, sorry, sorry.

    Dearest kris;
I was actually waiting for a serious answer. If your previous note was it, then I have no reason to change my mind. If you were reacting out of anger, please take time to write the east germans role in freeing your country. Yes, I agree that Gorbachev (sp?) had a major role in the whole situation. I for one admire him greatly.

    Danjo,
You’ll need to give Kris some time to heal following his confession. I can see how he became so confused though, politics and media have submerged into some very murky water.
None murkier, than the CNN chief’s confession last night that they were kicked out of Iraq once they were exposed as the CIA’s media wing.
In a strange stretch of journalistic ethics and a contradiction of his company logo, he chose not to report the truth of this, “…as it happens”.
Maybe Gorbachev(!) spilling the beans about communism was simply a ratings related thing for the fledgling network. Expect him on Good Morning Baghdad anytime soon.
