40-odd cities allegedly better than New York

40-odd cities allegedly better than New York
: One of those oft-quoted surveys of livability has just been released. New York has been used as the baseline (though after 9.11, they would have lowered our score). So there are between 44 and 48 cities in the world allegedly better to live in than here.

Now I should launch into some loyalist screed about New York right now but I do have to admit that I love a lot of cities on the list: Toronto, Vienna (there soon), Berlin, Stockholm, Munich, Montreal, Seattle, L.A. Hey: What’s San Francisco doing there? Ok, maybe I will launch into my parochial screed… [via Aardvark]

Absolutely, Jeff. I heard something about the study on the local radio yesterday. Did SF actually place 20 slots higher than NYC?
When I visited your lovely town last summer, the thing that impressed me most was how much more livable NYC felt than San Francisco, which has become the cold gray city of belligerent panhandling addicts, institutional corruption, and impossibly high housing prices.
Who did this study? The usual morons?

Forget it: Toronto bites lately. Not the spotless, polite city you may remember. Our restaurants are still very good (if non-smoking, by law). But mostly I find it loud, dirty and increasingly rude. We’re thinking of getting the heck out and we’re not alone.

Link to survey of livability refers to the 2002 survey. The link to the 2003 survey is

There are only marginal changes beyond the Nordics getting slammed for extinguishing themselves due to lack of daylight.
