When the people become the network programmers

When the people become the network programmers

: Here’s a petition demanding that the Daily Show be extended to an hour. Now if only the citizens would pay Jon Stewart’s added salary. [via Craig]

If they extended that show to a full hour I think the quality would suffer. Who needs more guests plugging crap anyway?

What might be good would be a Nightline type policy where they could go over if they had enough material.
If they did go to an hour, the additional advertising would pay for any raises and increases in staff.

That is a great idea. The first half could be used to bash the Republicans, the second half to bash the Democrats. This would make it easier because the first half would remain identical to the current show.

Yeah. Great idea. Like he’s not overexposed enough.

My husband is a devoted watcher of the Daily Show, but it doesn’t do too much for me. Aside from the questionable skits, it just doesn’t seem funny to me. However, my husband thinks it’s a hoot!

Jeff: Why would the citizens pay? It’s the advertisers who pay. This is America, not the BBC.

Just dont ask him any political questions, because Jon Stewart is a comedian on a comedy show that follows puppets making crank calls.

The advertisers don’t really pay. The consumer pays. Look at any branded product you buy and I assure you that the marketing and advertising costs far exceed the product costs (manufacture, distribution and duties). What value does the consumer gain from this? Nothing.

bad idea, if it ain’t broke…don’ts gos ands fixs its…the new format is the best thing they could have done…each night – show a new episode and for the second 30 minutes replay the last episode, it’s better than watching a show about potty-mouthed puppets.
if anything, they should save that slot for the blogtv thing or some new show that takes the daily show’s lead into a different direction without stepping on Stewart’s nice furniture…
don’t forget, the dailyshow gets better ratings than msnbc…

“What value does the consumer gain from this?”
    Awareness of the product?

I’m not sure if it’s so much “awareness” as it is “presence.”
Considering it’s one show that replays about 4 times a day on a “news” channel in disguise which only scratches the surface at balancing the media bias of FNC and MSNBC – because CNN just seems to be a little confused about what it wants to do. And even though I get my tv-fix from PBS-Newshour the rest of this red state nation is looking for the fireworks and reinforced propaganda on those channels with the shinny happy banners, I mean look how bland CNN looks, it’s almost greyscale.
So from a perspective of “airwaves,” as long as it’s on, it’s better than being drowned out by what we can’t believe is passing for acceptable cable broadcast information. that’s all.

I can see a petition for a FIVE SHOWS a week, up from the existing FOUR. But that is about it!

The second half should be a replacement for Tough Crowd, i.e. a show which actually gives the right a voice in political humor. More of the same will just mean lower quality.
