f’ing people dying everywhere and this is where our country spends it’s time, attention and resources.
my question is whats the use of an investigation? either he said it or he didnt. a few re-winds of a tivo button should be all it takes. if he said it and if you cant say it at the hour in which he said it, then fine em. and fine leno the same way they threatened to fine stern.
if he didnt say it then dont waste anyones time and/or money.
but if he did say it, the fine money should go to tsunami relief.
meanwhile why has it taken powell inc this long to decide whether oprah’s discussion of anal/oral sex was finable? what are they waiting for… Christmas 2006?
I just want it to be noted that as soon as Motley Crue uttered the word on New Years Eve/Day, I blogged it, predicting fake outrage would soon be everywhere from the right. Glad to see they don’t dissapoint. What I said then, even while (erm, more than?) a little tipsy, I agree with now: Why not make 2005 the year of free speech, instead.
The solution is simple: Reduce the FCC’s responsibilities to distributing broadcast frequencies to radio and television stations. Period.
I put together some “Freedom of Speech: Clearly FuCCed” shirts around the time of the Saving Private Ryan fiasco – solely inspired by Jeff’s writing on the subject – but I never bother to publicise them. Apparently it’s time to pull them out again…
In case anyone is interested, they are still available via Cafepress – net proceeds going to EFF…
Perhaps Vince should be asked to wash his mouth out with soap. I am not offended, but it seems a rather pointless use of a good word. What next, whoopee cushions for Kofi Annan?
You mean 12:00:05.
The funny thing about all this FCC stuff is that the people complaining most about these sorts of things are the same people who get all riled up about “political correctness.” They can’t take a little f’ing but have no problems when people make insensitive remarks about others race or religion. To them the PC Cops are worse then the pottymouth cops.
On Oct. 10, a group was “preaching God’s Word” to a crowd of people attending a Philadelphia gay event and displaying banners with biblical messages.
After a confrontation with a group called the Pink Angels, described by protesters as “a militant mob of homosexuals,” the 11 Christians were arrested and spent a night in jail.
Eight charges were filed: criminal conspiracy, possession of instruments of crime, reckless endangerment of another person, ethnic intimidation, riot, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct and obstructing highways.
None of the Pink Angels was cited or arrested.
After a preliminary hearing in December, Judge William Austin Meehan ordered four of the Christians to stand trial on three felony and five misdemeanor charges. If convicted, they could get a maximum of 47 years in prison. One female teenage protester faces charges in the juvenile justice system.
The protesters were charged with ethic intimidation .
If you can’t say words from a Bible, why should Howard be allowed his fucking stuff?
If we have free speech, it has to be free speech for all–not gay lawyer imposed kind of free speech for some and anything goes for Howard Stern. I’m for free speech–but not the PC selective kind.
Ah, Kat, from what you’ve written, it doesn’t sound like “words from the Bible” are what got these people arrested.
And truthfully, really, from what you’ve posted, I don’t think any words said by these so-called Christians are words that Jesus would say.
My question is, doesn’t anyone who makes the big bucks at the networks think about potential outcomes of decisions?
If you have Motley Cr
Have you any examples of what bits of ‘God’s Word’ they were preaching Kat?
Kat, do you wait, chomping at the bit, for any post by Jeff that remotely mentions censorship to bring up that tired old Philadelphia pink angels/christian conflict? What is it with you and gay people and Christians? You seem to have an unnatural fixation on this topic. And if you say “it’s because Christians are being persecuted” in this country one more time, I’m going to scream!
Oh, and the supposed video of the incident that gets posted from time to time is heavily edited and conveniently leaves out any actions of the supposed “Christian” group that may have been the actual cause for their arrest.
The *really* interesting part of this story is that the AP put out a wire story at 8:00 yesterday morning reporting that NBC had not received any complaints about the issue.
The Parents Television Council then posted a notice on its website encouraging its followers to gripe.
By noon yesterday, the AP ran a wire story about the FCC opening an investigation.
Not that I’m paranoid or anything, but does anyone else see a pattern here?
