Oh, those silly Jews

Oh, those silly Jews

: The other night, I blogged the appalling Scarborough (Buchanan) Country on MSNBC with rampant anti-semitism. The transcript is now up. Here’s the quote Andrew Sullivan picked out:

“Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It’s not a secret, OK? And I’m not afraid to say it. That’s why they hate this movie. It’s about Jesus Christ, and it’s about truth. It’s about the messiah. Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common.” – Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League

A big believer in restraint, you are, Billy. What was more frightening was the Pat Buchanan did not try to contain him; he cheered.

Sorry, I don’t read this as anti-Semitic. Stupid, yes, without forethought, yes, but not anti-Semitic. This would seem to be more of a generalization or stereotype about Hollywood’s executives and the movies they produce. His beliefs run counter to Hollywood’s, so he makes some stupid insuations. Big deal, he’s a nobody.
And I know you are not stating that sort of speech should be silenced, right Jeff?

    Mike:
That sort of speech certainly should be argued with and called out for what it is: the rantings of a seething hater. It’s too bad you can’t see the guy as he ranted. And, yes, I do believe it is anti-Semitic. The easy test is always to replace the word with another: If he said that basketball is controlled by those blacks, I think you’d object.

I am of the opinion that MSNBC must be trying to get rid of the show, I cannot think of another reason Buchanan would be given so much time on it. There are many people I respect who could do a better job, Lester Holt is the first I can think of.

I see your point, but I would still see it as an attack on those in charge of Hollywood, and not those of that particular religion/race/etc.
He mentions secular Jews that run Hollywood and hate Christianity and so on. He does not go on and say that all Jews hate Christianity. He does not make gross generalizations against Jews, just the executives in Hollywood. I’m not defending him, just offering a different viewpoint. And I didn’t see the program, this is just from reading what you posted.

Thanks for posting the transcript. I am Unitarian, I definitely think they were being anti-jewish. And that woman who is Hindu quotes the Bible but she doesn’t even know what she’s saying. This is not a dialogue or a discussion, it’s people shouting at each other for attention. The rabbi was the only one who seemed sane – the others only believe that what they think is right is right and everything else is wrong. Is it home schooling? “Intelligent” Design? Why are all the “Christian” “spokespeople” so ignorant and out of touch with reality? I don’t see a positive outcome for our future as a country.

Pat Buchanan, cheering for an anti-Semite? What are the odds.

    More concise Bill Donohue:
“Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity…Hollywood [‘controlled by…Jews’] likes anal sex…They [Hollywood – meaning Jews] like abortions…They [Hollywood – you know, Jews] believe in libertinism.”
Hard to miss the Jew-hate there. Jews hate Christians, Jews like anal sex (therefore responsible for homosexuals) and abortions (the ancient baby-killing myth) and have no values (they’re not saved by Christ, after all. Therefore they are heathens and should be eliminated).
Real bigots rarely confess to their bigotry, but make elaborate arguments to demonize their target. That’s how anti-Semitism works.

Sorry, the comment was not anti-Semitic. I don’t think it does jews a service to characterize as anti-Semitic every reference by non-jews to jews.

    hi
if someone would say such about jews/hollywood here in germany, he would disappear from tv forever, his host would also get in big trouble and maybe some heads of the broadcasting company had to go, too.
