But you already knew that

But you already knew that

: Yes, you already knew that John Dvorak was an utter ass who, like any brat, acts up when he’s desperate for attention. He’s desperate again, and so he writes that blogs and the internet and the people and anybody on earth except him is wrong about everything. So there.

Information revolution notwithstanding, the Internet will prove to be the undoing of society and civilization as we know it. It may not happen today, but it will happen sooner than we think….

I used to think that everyone was entitled to his opinion, but no longer. Most opinions are worthless….

Almost everyone on the Net is anonymous. When you see someone on the street handing out a flyer, it is usually not hard to determine whether he or she is a lunatic. Not so with the haughty blogger who, by hiding behind a good online template, is actually taken seriously. A blogger who stays hidden long enough may even become famous. I know, not every blogger is a whack job

He gets oh so close to the point yet misses it entirely. As he says, many people hold ludicrous opinions based on bogus facts. Before the internet these opinions were kept under wraps and subject to limited discussion. With the wider and more open sphere of public discussion enabled by the internet these opinions have increasingly been exposed to all. More importantly, the quasi-anonymity of the internet brings greater attention to the ideas rather than the people. The internet shines the light of public discusion on the many dank, dark, and fetid realms of opinion. This brings greater exposure to diseased ideologies, which seems to offend Dvorak mightily, but in so doing it also brings to them greater exposure to skeptical analysis, fact checking, and well-reasoned debate. Which is ultimately utterly poisonous to them. The end result is that though public debate seems to be coarsened the ideas people hold are actually elevated.

Of course the Net is the end of civilizatino as we know it. Hell, it’s already been the end of civilization as we know it.
Of curse, as I sit here reading up on differential diagnosis of leukemia, and what Arafat’s known symptoms are, in my pyjamas, at 01:11 on a Sunday morning, I’m not at all sure why that’s something to complain about.

Ambassador Diana Lady Dougan has a great quote, that this post caused me to remember:
“If there was an information revolution, it’s over: information won.”

This is the guy who said the iMac was going to sink Apple.
Why is anyone still bothering to publish him?

I still click on his links at PCMag, but more and more, I quit halfway through the artcles.
He does have some good ideas sometimes, but most often he just sounds like a miserable crank.
