What’s wrong with GoogleNews

: Strange crap like this pops up as the lead story today. Once again, GoogleNews gives prominence to fringe opinion sites, treating them like news sites (when I’ve suggested before that it would actually be compelling to create a service called GoogleViews and put them there) while ignoring blogs that at least link to news sources.

    Give Google a break. :-)
Choice of editorial sources is only part of the problem. Relevance of given stories, subject matter, and other algorithmic editing challenges are much harder than they look. We’ve spent the last six months working on our NewsRank algorithms to get the mix of news on Topix.net to be reasonable, balanced and interesting.
If all Google News does is average together the stories on the top news sites, it’s not adding any value. You want to delve into more obscure sources that the user wouldn’t otherwise encounter. Balacing a wide variety of news sources while still separating the wheat from the chaff is hard.

I’ve found the one thing that works through Google News for sure is the mail service – which they outsource. I find if you have very specific topics that you want searched up, your inbox will swell with positive stuff.
Also – GN picked up Engadget the other day, so it’s *starting*.

It looks like Google will be tied to Blogger, at least for the next while. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google comes up with some sort of blog aggregator, but only links to Blogger blogs.

A daily reading of the WaPo or SFChronicle would indicate that Google has it right. Opinions are news. News are opinions. Opinions of opinions are news.
Blaming the messenger for revealing the Emperor’s New Clothes is wrong. The MSM-tree killers consistently refuse to separate their opinions from news. They lack the editing skills to force the basic’s of a news story on reporters. Meandering mush scattered throughout the paper is taken for news by the readers.
If the editors and readers consider opinion as news why fault Google?

This lead story honestly summarizes why Kerry has lost, is there a more important story to read first?
I don’t think this story can be covered properly as straight news, the hate we have for Kerry is what redeems our American Souls and a reporter who doesn’t hate Edwards has never been a father and has no interest in the Future.

Well that’s news; Kerry has lost, and Edwards hates children, I’m so glad Ripper got that scoop, now I can go back to sticking my head in the sand, if there’s any room left.

Edwards stole from your OBGYN, many have retired leading to higher child mortality than we would have had if Edwards had never been admitted to extortion school.
