How dare President Bush unilaterally travel to the Olympics without taking our allies feelings into account? I’m sure Pres. Chirac and Schroeder would also have liked to attend. When I am President, I will not travel anywhere without consulting our allies!– John Kerry
if he was a real man he’d go to iraq and try to broker a peace considering that 28 soldiers died last week.
You mean appease the terrorists like Clinton did for 8 years. If that’s a real man I’d hate to see your idea of a coward.
you really have nothing better to do on a nice sunday than read drudge?
Well…that sure didn’t take long to break down into partisan sniping.
Is it at all possible that the President could go to watch the Iraqi soccer team in the quarterfinals without people screaming about politics?
Um – so none of you mentioned whether you thought it was a good idea.
The same guy who said he didn’t want to go to his daughters’ graduations and “become a distraction.”
If he went he would show his tin ear, again. Iraqi soccer team members have already asked him to stop using them in his political advertising. And, um, asked how he thought Bush could face God with so much blood on his hands. (Now, I thought that was somewhat harsh).
It was a Drudge report so you can pretty much guarantee the opposite.
Bad idea. Although maybe he could help out the NBA — sorry – USA Olympics basketball team. I hear they need a ball-handler, though not another ego …
PS, Does anyone else realize Iraq had an Olympic team in 2000 and 1996. Really? Yeah.

Yes, and everyone realizes they were tortured and raped by Saddam’s crazy spawn if they lost or did not obey orders for sex by Uday..
If Drudge said the sun was going to rise tomorrow, I’d want to see it for myself before believing him.

I bet that, like so many other tales of Saddam, came straight from Chalabi’s forgery shop. Find those people shredders yet?
Robert still hasn’t figured out why people don’t take him very seriously, I see…

That story actually was reported by Ann Clwyd, a Labour Member of Parliament, Special Envoy on Human Rights in Iraq. At least, I first became aware of it in one of her editorials in a British paper, possibly the Guardian.
And she’s one of yours
Andrew;
Funny how primitive minds deal with numbers. “One, two, many . . .” In this case 2 of 22, plus the holdover, Uday’s coach, called in when the German who salvaged the team was driven home by death threats.
So “Iraqi soccer team members” doesn’t even quite qualify in your “many” counting system.
BTW, one comes from Najaf, the other from Fallujah.
Um – so none of you mentioned whether you thought it was a good idea
It’s not a good idea. A bit too blatantly photo-opish. On the other hand, nobody is showing up for these events anyway, Bush would be doing them a favor by packing the stands :)
>Since the early 1980s, I have read about >executions that took place there and methods >used by the regime to deal with its opponents in >the prison.
Funny how most of the torture took place in the 80’s and early 90’s when we had Republican presidents who were too happy to support Saddam and didn’t give a darn about the same Iraqi people they claim to love so much. Powell said in 2001 that Saddam was “contained” he was not a threat to anyone. Saddam was not stupid enough to start his campaign of torture and slaughter of Iraqi’s in recent years because even he knew the rest of the world would come after him this time.
The dishonest people in this debate are those who claim to love the iraqi people when in reality the only reason they supported the war was because they wanted a little muslim blood after 9/11. If 9/11 had never happened and Saddam had rounded up the Shiites in the middle of Baghdad the same supporters of the war would be saying “it’s none of our business.”
NBC News tonight said this was an “internet rumor” that was neither confirmed nor denied by the White House.
And Cnn concluded that the New York Times and Washington Post have researched and
concluded that ALL the Swift Boat Vets against Kerry are liars and therefore there should be a backlash against Bush because we must believe NYT and WaPo. What horse manure!!
The dishonest people in this debate are those who claim to love the iraqi people when in reality the only reason they supported the war was because they wanted a little muslim blood after 9/11
…as opposed to those anti-war Democrats who loved the Iraqi people so much, they were quite willing to let Saddam and sanctions keep slowly killing and torturing thousands of Iraqis for years to come while the international debating society dithered.
I question the timing.
Couldn’t he wait until after the election?

LOL, Walsingham. Would that be Francis by any chance?

Huh? You’re a freak, “david.” Go crawl back under your rock, you pathetic loser.
Where’s the harm in Bush going? Looks good for the cameras and reminds the Iraqis that we have high expectations for them.
I think it’s a great idea. What is the harm in going to watch an Olympic soccer match? I’d go if I could afford it.
Given the team members’ comments about being in his campaign ad, I think it could be a political disaster for Bush.
And given the state of fighting in Iraq, I would prefer that he stay in DC and work on winning the fight in Najaf and Falluja.
So david, should Bush broker a peace deal with the Mehidi army who indiscriminantly attacks civilians and police, who failed to overrun a Najaf police station in 3 attempts to start the current crisis, who are not controlled by Sadr contrary to public opinion, or who kidnap journalists for publicity?
Should Bush broker peace with Iran who is actively funneling terrorists, jihadis, cash, weapons, military instructors, and even a media support network in order to destabilize Iraq?
Should Bush broker a peace deal with Al Qaeda and Zarqawi who will kill as many Iraqis as it takes for the coalition to fail in Iraq? Who kidnap Iraqis who work with the coalition and give them a choice between being beheaded or becoming a suicide bomber? Who not only coordinate attacks with the Arab press networks for maximum propaganda effect, but who even recorded an Al Jazeera cameraman to film a hostage prior to a beheading [the hostage escaped].
Should Bush broker a peace deal with the x-Baathists in Iraq, and the current Baathists in Syria who are funneling weapons and money to insurgents throughout the country? Baathists who are currently supplying weapons, cash and training to the Mehidi army according to an Iraqi blogger?
Who exactly should Bush broker peace with? What past evidence do you have that they will negotiate anything or adhere to any agreement? Have you even followed the past half dozen agreements Sadr has broken in the last week alone?
What fantasy world are you living in?
Make that recruited, not recorded.
Could someone answer this question for me: how come Iraqis can be condemn Bush for having “blood on his hands” but not say a word about Hussein? It seems only the ones directly harmed by him have issues. I know the same thing can be said for Bush, but it almost appears thankless, especially since Iraqi protest tend to be violent. The one protest I was specifically proud of by Iraqis were the ones promoted by Sistani.
Also, I think the press media suffers from “Woodward and Bernstein (sp) Disease” when it comes to this war. What makes them think they could have stopped it if they just asked questions?
Hey Rachel, the story behind the story of the article, is that the journalist was interviewing two players and the coach. The coach was a Baathist who had worked under Saddam, and was busy working now for much less money and some less personal glory. Of the two people interviewed in the article, one was from Fallujah, the other from Najaf. The other people on the team were not mentioned. Doubtless, considering media standards, because their story would not have been “a story” to grab attention.
Iraq the Model has stories on it here and on other places on the blog
it’s so nice to see the President support another country’s athletes. I mean, it’s not like he’s from the US or anything….or even cares what goes on in this country….*sigh* then again the Iraqi team needs to realize that they’re a political football for Bush and that they need to get over it.
