The headline on Dan Okrent’s column today: “Is The New York Times a Liberal Newspaper?”
And the lead: “Of course it is.”
The media pundit's pundit. Written by NYC insider Jeff Jarvis, BuzzMachine covers news, media, journalism, and politics.

This does not bode well for the FTC complaint about Fox. Moveonup.org is gonna find it hard to stop the courts from taking their arguments against Fox and applying them to all media.
What fun-!
Pretty good column by Okrent. But (you knew that was coming) he only deals with cultural issues. I can let that go by, as it doesn’t interest me that much. News is th central issue for me, and it is here that I find the NY Times greatest failing. I just don’t trust it to be truthful, or offer a broad picture. The headlines are political, the information often second hand from the wire services, so the Times stamp means nothing, and the coverage narrow and biased. I don’t even bother to look at the Times anymore, except for the science section, which remains very good. Shame, really.
Excellent column. Urban reality is far different than global reality. Urbanites are a wonderfull and colorfull group of people. My problem with the Yups and their ilk is that they go to great lengths to ram their vision down everyone elses gullet. I understand where their vision of reality comes from but their lack of tolerance is not understandable. I know they think food comes from grocery stores. I know they don’t understand why anyone should own an automoblie. Why do they insist that their reality is the only one? Why should cement crazed zombies who never see the sky rule the world?
Right, so it’s the fault of urbanite reader influence. The NYT is so in touch with “post modern” NY social diversity it can’t possibly be expected to get outside it’s own value system and do any self-questioning. “potentially nettlesome effects of gay marriage have been virtually absent from The Times” not to mention the oil for money scandal! Negligence doesn’t have to be intentional but it’s still negligence none-the-less. It’s not the fault of the NYT. His article has shifted blame to the readers. Okrent is an ombudspin.
What we’ve always suspected turns out to be true – we have a Euro-style press – red media and blue media.
the question is would any of the Murdock-owned papers run a similar column calling them out for being conservative?
Yes, Montana. And our system is much worse than in Europe becuase the biases in American media tend to be hidden, the audience tends hold onto the fallacy of objectivity and neutrality, and as a consequence, ideology is spooned-out without anyone realizing their mouths are wide open.
Beautiful. I will now gleefully and energetically wave this in the face of anyone who ever dares to cite the Times as some sort of credible source again.
One enemy down…..next!

Tony, when a Murdock-owned paper claims to be the paper of record, then we’ll discuss it….
Zing!
Trump – why do you equate credibility with lack of bias? The key is for the consumer of the information to identify, acknowledge, and adapt to the bias present.
Also, the NYT has never claimed to be the “paper of record.” That was a distinction placed on it by others, as Okrent explains here.

Poor babies.
Fine by me, let them make it clear in no uncertain terms that they’re not to be considered a “paper of record” and we can all get on with identifying them for what they really are- a niche-market vanity press.
That’s fine, Trump. We/you should identify them as a niche-market vanity press. What paper isn’t? The WSJ – USA Today – Wash Post – they all are after niche markets. That’s what happens in a capitalist society. So, what’s the point of everyone jumping up and down pointing out how the Times is liberal? Just deal with it. Buy/don’t buy it. If you read it, be aware of the bias, and take some personal responsibility on how you decode the message they’re sending.
Great advice Michael. Can you put that point to the left half of the nation as it gears up to take Fox off the air? I see Fox in a much bigger fight for legitimacy than NYT has had to deal with.
