Let’s play Whom Do You Trust?

: Go read these two posts by Glenn Reynolds showing why we should and do trust Iraqi bloggers more than major media covering Iraq. And read this from Iraqi blogger Omar:

It seems that some people in the major media still think they

I can’t believe no one else has commented on this yet, but anyway… maybe it’s a slow night for blog-reading.
I, for one, would certainly like to know what Terry Heaton thinks of this, as much of an advocate for the news revolution he’s been with OhMyNews in South Korea. Omar is on to the same thing – ubiquitous cameras, easy commenting, no more news monopoly.
The Fourth Estate is going to be a run-down rental property if they don’t get their acts together, and soon.

I posted on this elsewhere last night. Have been doing my little promotion of these Iraqui blogs, especially “Healing Iraq” for weeks, or months, sort of locking horns with a “lawyer smart” ACLU member who questions their “authenticity” and whether they are money-making scams. Kidding I am not. But he hasn’t yet said, “vast right-wing conspiracy.”

Bloggers caught the media making a mistake. You’re all my heroes now.
Wait a second, what was the mistake? It was that Bremer did in fact address the Iraqi people before skipping out of town. And this changes what exactly?
Please enlighten me as to what this amazing feat has changed. Are less people dying in Iraq because we now correctly know that Bremer addressed the people of Iraq? Does this totally discredit the media’s claims that people are even dying in Iraq. Have the terrorists now given up because they thought Bremer ran away like a thief in the night but now see he didn’t?
Help me out. Why should I give a crap about some guy named Omar setting us all straight on whether or not Bremer gave a speech?

Robert, help me out here. Why should anybody give a crap about helping you out?
The request for assistance has built into it an assumption of good faith.
Which is why nobody is going to help YOU out.
    It’s a faulty assumption.

Sorry, I was under the impression that Jeff posted this stuff in his blog in order to sway opinion to his point of view. Obviously I was mistaken and clearly see now that his only intention is to preach to the choir.

Robert, the explanation is simple. You should “give a crap,” to follow your expression, because if the media got such an easy-to-verify fact wrong…
…*what else*, more important or critical, are they getting wrong or missing altogether?
That’s why it’s important, and we give a crap.

The media is very powerful and often quoted by polititicians. It has a responsibility to be honest in presenting the news. I understand in your state-controlled media in Canada that questioning is not promoted. Your posts in the past preclude you of any credibility when you state a willingness to change your viewpoint on anything as you have been silenced many times on many different subjects or at least you have “disappeared” often when personally challenged with facts.

So you just think the media should be infallable and if it’s not then some nobody living in Iraq should be trusted instead. Is that right?

Okay, but the mistaken fact in question is meaningless, except perhaps as a farting point.

Not quite. If the media is incapable of reporting such basic facts correctly, then we ought not accept their other reports with further critical evaluation.
Or in other words, perhaps Iraq isn’t quite the quagmire the media has portrayed it to be.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. I can see you not trusting one source–in fact I don’t trust the UK Telegraph since they’ve consistently gotten things wrong–but to not trust many multiple sources is ludicrous.
And Iraq is a quagmire. Today is day 480 of the war. Over 1,000 coalition soldiers have died and over 10,000 Iraqi civilians. Every reason for going to war is proving to have been a lie and the Iraqi coffers have been emptied by greedy corporations. The list goes on and on.

    Really?
    Can I see the list?
    > and the Iraqi coffers have been emptied by greedy corporations.
Really? Which coffers? (Only those coffers that had money before the war count.)
The palace-building and bribe-paying coffers are now empty, but that’s mostly because no one is putting money into them now. But, somehow I don’t think that McClelland was talking about the those greedy corporations, as they’re French, German, Russian, with a helping of pols from those countries.

No WMDs, not working relationship with Al Qaeda. In short, Iraq posed no threat to America as Bush claimed.
    Which coffers?
The pillaging of Iraq (blogwhore alert). The US took control of $20 billion dollars from the Oil for Food program and Iraqi oil revenues and have left the new interim government with a pathetic $216 million in the bank. This money was mismanaged by the US, with much of it going to Halliburton for shoddy, overpriced work and as much as $3 billion of it has simply disappeared into unknown pockets.

    > No WMDs,
Sorry, but the actual reason given was failure to comply with UN resolutions wrt WMDs. If Iraq was running a bluff, they’re in the same position as someone who points a fake or unloaded gun at a cop.
    > not working relationship with Al Qaeda
Try again. The only evidence offered so far is that Iraq didn’t work with Al Qaeda on 9/11, which isn’t that interesting. After all, Germany didn’t work with Japan on Pearl Harbor.
    > The US took control of $20 billion dollars from the Oil for Food program and Iraqi oil revenues and have left the new interim government with a pathetic $216 million in the bank.
And stuff. Of course, some Iraqis are blowing up said stuff, but that’s not the US’ fault.
And, you don’t get to complain about any US theft unless you first demonstrate that you complained about thefts under the previous regime.
    We’ll wait.
