.IQ

.IQ

: Iraq wants the .IQ domain. Great idea on so many levels: Iraq can and should build a robust and free presence on the Internet (shaming many a neighbor). And, hell, Iraq can sell use of .IQ to outsiders for a profitable price. Someday, domains could be more valuable than oil, eh?

Iraq has always “had” the IQ domain. The country domains are reserved by country code, and Iraq’s country code is IQ. I think what they are doing is asking ICANN to allow the present government to use it or asking ICANN to activate it so they can use it (not sure which).
Unless they change their country name Iraq gets the IQ domain. They don’t have a choice. The article seems to be implying that they asked specifically for .IQ (which they might have if they were clueless on how it all works).
But I agree that “.IQ” could be a great money maker for them if they chose to sell it. Like “.tv” and “.to”, it’s one a lot of people will want to use.
If they open it for non-gov use, you want to bet on whether or not Mensa is the first (other than speculators) to apply? (grinning…)

I’d better reserve 180+.iq then, if only for laughs.

Maybe they want the party to whom it was originally registered to be changed (it may have been Uday or some Baathist party).
Someone has been using it. They surfed over to my blog one day. I suspect it was Paul Bremer or someone from CPA. I thought the singularity of the usage was strange.

I don’t recall .tv working out all that well for Tuvalu…
