The DaIly Stern

The DaIly Stern

: NEXT, CHICKEN BREASTS WILL BE BANNED: The entertainment reaction to the FCC’s new puritanism just keeps getting more absurd. The Wall St. Journal on Fear Factor:

Now producers are on a much shorter leash. Heightened sensitivity to the decency debate means contestants won’t be asked to eat the private parts of water buffalo, as in season three. While not banned outright by the network, that sort of thing isn’t encouraged, Mr. Kunitz says. Nixed altogether: anything involving animal blood (in one early episode contestants had to bob for rings in a 50-gallon vat of it) and stunts performed in the nude.

Well, if I can’t live in a society with TV shows about people bobbing for rings in barrels of animal blood, I might as well be living under the Taliban.

Jeff, your ignorance of what Puritanism was all about is as disconcerting as your support of Howard Stern as a victim of government harassment. I mean, historians and scholars started to reclaim the truth about the Puritans starting back in the early part of the 20th century. (Christians and theologians who always had a clue didn’t need the historians and scholars to know the truth.) Look into it. Much of everything I’m sure you value in the world you live in today can be traced to the beliefs and work of the Puritans and those they influenced over time… Don’t mean to frighten you too much, but it’s for good reason John Calvin – the foundational theologian of the Purtian movement – is called the founding father of the United States of America. (Yeah, I’m sure minds out there will be instantly seized with scary associations and myths regarding him as well… So be it. Ignorance. You really can’t live without it if you’re going to be a left wing ‘liberal’…)

Stern, by the way, finally accomplished it. I’ve kept his show off this morning. The threat of his juvenile political rants cropping up now in ANY hour of his program combined with the tediousness of a 50-year-old ignoramous freak-of-nature talking about how his supermodel girlfriend just melts when she looks at him (and all the other rivetting dialogue) has now done him in. I’ll leave the show now to all the 16-year-old – in actuality or just in mind – Chomskyites and indymedia types. Their new hero of the revolution.

Who cares? I just want to know when he goes back to being funny. At 9:50 this morning (EST) he started in on his Kerry blow-job segment. Can someone else (Tony perhaps) who listens to this drivel tell us how long this goes on for? I tuned out already.

Oh, one more thing…..this morning he had the wrestler in who had no arms or legs. Stern asked him if he was a “jesus freak”. But when the kid said yes, why didn’t Stern start yelling at him and talking about how bad his religion is? Can he at least be consistant?

A large problem with denying content – censorship – is to determine where it stops (or for that matter starts) being useful and becomes itself objectionable or silly.
After all, it can lead to things like the Chicago ban of a Walt Disney nature flick (Vanishing Praire because it showed the birth of a buffalo calf).
A couple of years ago, my nephew wanted to get and resize some pics from the Web for a school project. MSDraw etc. would not touch JPG or GIF (or a host of others): well, I had long been using a free package (IrfanView) for such simple stuff, and went to download it. But my sister had AOL’s nanny blocking in place: I couldn’t get to Ziff-Davis publishing ZDNet or CNet!
