Daily Stern update from the road: A caller said he got a letter from the FCC saying they will not fine Oprah for doing just what Stern did to get fined. Smoking gun of the hypocritical vendetta against him.

: UPDATE: A commenter (rudely) points out that this came from a wack-packer. I had just tuned in and didn’t know who it came from.

: UPDATE II: I was going to call the FCC to check on this when I got home. Ernie Miller beat me to it. He says the FCC does not know of such a letter. Howard, it appears, gets a phony phone call from his own phony phone caller.

And I was taken in, too.

    Jeff, your intellectual dishonesty is stunning. That “caller” was Capt. Janks, a Stern sycophant.
    God knows what letter he was sent, if indeed he was sent one at all.
    There are a couple of very accurate Stern blogs out there. Let them do the show recaps…

    Smoking gun? Vendetta? Please tell me you have more to your theory than just some caller from the Howard Stern show. Especially if that caller is Captain Janks!
    It’s gotten to the point where you really can’t believe anything coming out of Stern’s mouth. Everything he speaks of lately is unfounded leftist shrill. His show is dominated by his politics now, and his rants are just depressing. His trashing of Bush this morning, the pinnacle being when he said that Bush stated that Jesus told him to lie about the WMDs, puts him in the same category as Michael Moore as far as I’m concerned.

    Oprah’s show was clearly educational. Stern’s was for “entertainment”. Informing mothers about what their kids might be talking about vs. giggling about blumpkins is no comparison. The FCC may be getting out of control, but by its own standards and rules, it is right not to rule against Oprah.

    I hope you don’t feel this is offtopic, but here is a very relevant real life tie-in between Howard Stern’s problems and Nightline reciting the names of our fallen.

    NewsBlues.com is reporting [no free link] that Sinclair Broadcast Group has ordered its ABC-affiliated stations not to carry tomorrow’s “Nightline,” which will air the names and photos of soldiers who have been killed in combat in Iraq.

    Anne, what in the hell does this have to do with censorship? A private company doesn’t want to take part in this sensationalistic piece and decides not to air over THEIR stations. Big deal.
    I don’t even want to get into the motives behind the airing of this by Nightline.

    Mike,
    It’s the same situation as with Howard Stern and Clear Channel.
    Clear Channel is a private company that removed Howard Stern. Sinclair is a private company removing Nightline. In both cases it appears to be for political reasons in which each company may be trying to suck up to politicians.
    Jeff thinks that Howard is being censored, but believes that Nightline is being exploitive. And so with this latest development, I am curious as to what Jeff makes of Nightline being removed.
    As to the motives behind the airing of this by Nightline, that’s in the thread a few doors down.

    Anne, I realized where the thread concerning the motives was, just didn’t want to start rehashing it is all.
    And as far as your comparison, its not like the company is getting rid of the entire show Nightline. More of a personal choice about airing what is sure to be a slanted piece of our fallen soldiers. I don’t believe it has to do with gaining any favors politically.
