Air America off air

Air America off air
: Air America went off the air in Chicago and L.A. Drudge says the Chicago Tribune will report a cash-flow crisis. Air America’s statement.

A week ago, I noted a lack of paid ads.

  • Hmmm that seems kinda odd. Not even a month. Franken kept on saying we was hoping for a legal battle (with O’Rielly) now it looks like he’ll get it.

  • Quite aleap there bub.
Did you not read your own link
(And yes, of course, they”re not going to say “we’re poor” in a press release.
But I don’t think it’s true .. unless joe Trippi is sellgn the ads. :)
But they’ve got some money behind this thing and I don’t think they would give up the whole thing at the drop of a hat.

  • Drudge is a rumor-monger.

  • the “statement” one.

  • Seems you’re channeling Drudge. As a NYCer, I’m sure you remember Fox’s fight with TW Cable.

  • Air America’s press release is priceless:
To shut off a broadcast that listeners rely on without warning and in the middle of discussions is the height of irresponsibility and a slap in the face of the media industry.
“Rely on”??? You’ve been on the air two weeks and you’re already radio heroin?
The day after they announce a bunch of new affiliates they let this happen with two of their most important outlets. Amateurs. How many of those new stations are going freak out and be asking for their money up front?

Tribune article here (free subscription only):,1,1031586.story
According to the article, the Chicago affiliate “kicked out Air America’s lone staffer … switched over to a Spanish-language feed, and changed the locks on the doors.”
    I like these guys.

  • Robert E. Bihlmayer

“To shut off a broadcast that listeners rely on without warning and in the middle of discussions is the height of irresponsibility and a slap in the face of the media industry”
why am i not surprised to see the Left using the same logic as Hussein’s Iraq? “how dare you interrupt our delaying tactic/’discussion’ with substantive action to protect your interests?”

A liberal enterprise going bankrupt? Whaa…?

  • sol

Next shoe to drop: look for the dumb celebrities to jump ship. Though they’ll embarass themselves forever to ‘take down Bush’ they’re not, like, going to have themselves associated with a loser network that can’t make them at least some respectable cake. They thought that was covered by the billionaire sugar-daddies…

  • Insufficiently Sensitive

Apparently Air America thought that every business runs like government social service bureaucracies, where a promise to pay is simply faith that the uber-bureaucrat will see to it that you’re covered. Only here, they’ve stiffed the broadcasters for a million bucks, and George Soros hasn’t dropped everything to bail them out, and the broadcasters took the appropriate actions. Welcome to capitalism, airhead America.

You knew AA couldn’t last .. after all, didn’t Al Gore endorse it?

  • They appear to have a $60 million trust fund, provided in part by the founder of Real Networks. So, I’ll guess this isn’t a money issue. Their request for a TRO says this is a contract dispute that should have been arbitrated.

  • Anonymous

I have a feeling that this will turn out like the
Fair & Balanced lawsuit and Luskin’s attempt to mess w/Atrios. Lots of free publicity and lot o’hits. But I could be wrong…..wagers anyone?

  • It’s no surprise that Drudge jumped the gun here. Air America stopped payment on a check over a contract issue, notified the company their was a stop payment and that the issue needed to be resolved before they would release the funds and the company still cashed the check. AA is far from bankrupt regardless of what “the internet” says.

  • bob

AA: Here’s your check, but don’t deposit it.
    Liu: Huh?
    AA: We issued a stop-payment.
    Liu: Huh?
    AA: Let’s negotiate.
    Liu: Huh?
AA: You locked us out?! WE’LL SUE! You Right-Wing Multiculturalist Fascist!

  • capt joe

    gentlemen pay their bills.
Oops, guess that is not applicable there.

  • JJ Walker

Maybe it’s just me, but why is a radio show paying the radio station to air their show? I mean are they doing an infomershow? I thought it worked the other way around…
I gues Air America has to buy their listeners.

  • michael

this is a business tactic / fiscal decision. it has nothing to do with the fact its a liberal organization. you people can really be unbelievable sometimes.

  • I looked on Air America’s Contact Us page – boy do they ever have a nice contract:
By posting or submitting any materials, including but not limited to (any jokes, creative material, remarks, program (or any other) ideas, graphics, photos, comments, product concepts, advertising concepts or ideas, and suggestions for improving or changing existing content) to this website, (or by mail, fax, telephone, or any other means of communication) you automatically grant (or warrant that the owner of such rights has expressly granted) to Air America Radio and its parent company, Progress Media, a royalty-free, nonexclusive, perpetual and irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, publish, edit, translate, perform, display and distribute such materials alone or as part of other works in any form or technology now known or later developed, (you waive any moral rights you may have in having the material altered or changed in a manner not agreeable to you) and to sublicense such rights through multiple tiers of sub-licensees.

I noticed Air America’s website was making fun of Arthur Liu’s last name while bashing him. I was just wondering if this would be deemed racist had Limbaugh done the same schtick…

  • michael

And FoxNews has this as part of their Terms of Use:
You agree that any Message whatsoever submitted by you becomes the property of FOX and may be used, copied, sublicensed, adapted, transmitted, distributed, publicly performed, published, displayed or deleted as FOX sees fit.
This is standard language people. C’mon!
/Gee – what other ways can I find to ridicule or put-down those who I don’t agree with…./

  • Sandy P.

They have enough money for Randi?? to put AA’s lawyer on the air today.

Yesterday’s incident isn’t the first time Air America has run into money problems.
A general manager for a radio station in central New England who asked not to be named contacted Air America three weeks ago and proposed putting the entire network on a talk station that would have reached the Boston market.
The response: “We don’t have any money left. We’ve spent all our affiliation money.”

  • hen

to quote the philosopher Nelson Muntz; Ha ha!

  • James Stephenson

See the problem michael is their unwillingness to prove a market exists. See when Limbaugh started, I know a lot of you hate him, he did not make squat and he started on one radio station. Over time, he built it up into a 14.5 million listener empire. It took him 20 years or so, but he proved the marketability of said market. As such other Conservative and Liberal talk show hosts jumped on the band wagon, as well as many AM stations.
Now since Air America is really only about beating Bush they had no time to establish a Radio Station, work on the material or spend time building a market. As such they had to buy off these little radio stations. Some of which were turning profits so they had to spend more money and kick the local Station’s personalities off the air.
Is it a sound financial decision, doubtful. You would need a lot of money to even match 1/10th of Limbaugh’s coverage. And even more if you are talking about all of Conservative Talk Radio’s coverage. Here in Atlanta there are 2 good sized Stations that cover Talk radio. To buy off the time, it would cost a good bit of coin I would imagine.
Incidently, Boortz said on his web page that a station that runs his show called up AirAmerica about running with a couple of the shows on their station. They asked who else they run, and when he mentioned, Limbaugh, Hannity and Boortz, they told no thank you.
So here was a Radio station that was going to take it without being paid to take it and they would not sell to them.
That my friends is idiotic business. First of all, you have an established Talk Radio station. Secondly you talk to the people you need to change the minds of. Thirdly, you want dissenting view points, so you can shoot em down and make fun of em.
From my viewpoint, it sounds more like a Political Campaign then an actual business. Remember how Dean ran through over 80 million dollars in no time.
