Protest is American
: From the looks of things, Atrios is right about this. Let’s not bring back the worst of the ’60s.

Well, with Sonny dead, I really doubt we will ever see Sonny & Cher reunite, which would definitely get my vote as the worst of the 60s.

I’m a bit frightened too, but I’m also thinking there may be more to tell than just what’s in there. It’s weird she says terrorist without any accusations her way. Also, wasn’t it illegal to visit Iraq back then? Great site by the way.

There are a lot of aging hippies out there who would love nothing better than to relive their glorious youth and, are eager to trump up comparisons to that time. What was it Karl Marx said about history?

I don’t know anything about Atrios and don’t want to get dragged into anything.
The lawyers’ organization he mentioned, I believe, is an Afro-American group. So what’s the point being made here? Prima facie, it looks like racial discrimination, but I haven’t seen their case. What do they claim their problem is? -
I just surfed through the links. There is a gag order imposed on this case!
I can’t figure out what is being suspected. Maybe they’re fishing for Nation of Islam involvement.
Maybe they suspect radical Black Americans have some terrorist Muslim contacts. Maybe that’s all wrong and way off. -
The targets of the subpoenas believe investigators are trying to link them to an incident that occurred during the rally. A Grinnell College librarian was charged with misdemeanor assault on a peace officer; she has pleaded innocent, saying she simply went limp and resisted arrest.
I’m guessing the story meant “police” officer, not “peace” officer.
I don’t know about this being a big deal if they are subpoenaing people to testify about an alleged assault.
“The best approach is not to speculate and see what we learn on Tuesday” when the four testify, said Ben Stone, executive director of the Iowa Civil Liberties Union, which is representing one of the protesters. -
I strongly believe there is more to this story than has been reported.
I saw this story yesterday. The article is almost identical to the press release issued by the group itself.
In the article, it mentions that a protestor was arrested for misdemeaner assault on a police office..she claims to have gone limp. What isn’t mentioned was that the officer claimed he was kicked and his knee was dislocated.
The article quotes Brian Terrell and refers to him as one of those receiving a subponea. Brian Terrell leads a group who regularly protest by trespassing on military installations. They get more attention when they are arrested, that is their intent.
The same group also protested a National Guard send off at Camp Dodge in March of last year. While the troops were saying goodbye to their families, the protestors were encouraging the soldiers disobey orders and refuse to deploy. They offered aid and legal assistance to anyone who refused to deploy. (13 were arrested at that protest)
a copy of the letter here
Another of those arrested, left this post on a blog., I thought this line was particularly interesting “This Fall is the time to organize a state wide nonviolent occupation of the STARC Armory facility” STARC Armory is the I.N.G headquarters.
Full disclosure. My husband is a member of the Iowa National Guard. I read the article about the protest last March. At the time, my husband was under orders to deploy on May 11, and I remember thinking that I would not have been very pleasant if someone began harrassing my husband or myself while we were saying goodbye.
Those May 11th orders were later cancelled, and he did not deploy. He is now under new orders and deploys on March 5th. My sentiments still stand. -
I vote for radical anarchists who took too much LSD as the worst of the 60’s. We are still dealing with their mind-blowing trips to nowhere.
In hindsight, their peaceful protests were anything but peaceful.
I am not going to ride the “activist’s magic bus” this time around.
We won’t be fooled again….. -
the worst of the sixties was in caving in to idiotic protesters like john forbes kerry and jane fonda
so don’t surrender: knock heads and throw the book at them (they’re probably committing 19 different forms of treason… encouraging and aiding desertion is usually a good charge for death or a very long term in leavenworth)
give the filthy hippies a good cold shower and then knock some sense into them! -
Looks like the “activists?” were breaking the law after all.
