Finally, something about which I agree with Howard Dean…

Finally, something about which I agree with Howard Dean…
: He says:

Howard Dean, a physician and a Democratic presidential candidate, on Monday dismissed as “silly” a government inquiry into whether indecency rules were broken during the broadcast of the Super Bowl halftime show when pop diva Janet Jackson’s bodice was ripped to expose her right breast.

“I find that to be a bit of a flap about nothing,” the former Vermont governor said. “I’m probably affected in some ways by the fact that I’m a doctor, so it’s not exactly an unusual phenomenon for me.”

Well, I agree with him about the silly part, but not about the bored-with-breasts part. Does he have to try so hard to be the unClinton?

But you should all note what a fair and balanced headline that is, above. I could have said this instead:

Howard Dean bored by breasts!

Wait a minute– I’m not going to let you off so easy!
Dean is bored with breasts adorned with Ninja throwing star decorations?
    Weaponized mamories?
    Bored?????
    Hmmm.

It seems Mickey Kaus is all bent out of shape by this, as well. (Or am I missing deep tongue-in-cheek irony?) I particularly dislike the dissembling by MTV (for sure) and CBS (probably) about having no idea the stunt was going to be pulled, but I don’t think it’s worth this investigation. However Jeff, can’t you understand why families who don’t live, say, in New York City but rather in Texas might have been offended at sitting down with their kids to watch presumed family entertainment turn into a quasi-porn show?

I’m shocked anyone actually even watches the halftime show. Especially that part.
I mean, Justin Timberlake’s audience and that of the NFL are about as opposite as you can get.

…Right. So anyway, back on Planet Earth. OH NO! A TITTY!! CALL THE FEDS!!!

Jeff: I’m offended that you’d assume that New York families are pervs. I’m calling the New York Anti-Defamation League immediately.

Jeff obviously didn’t watch it with a room full of children or his 10-year old daughter — who is still asking questions about the event.
Jeff, can’t there be some time on TV where it is safe to watch without having to explain why your daughter shouldn’t allow this to happen to her?

My, My, I see you erased my racy missive. Was it too shocking for you?
Then you publish those cleansed souls, who claim they are impervious to shock! Yeah, that makes sense.

I think that if Janet Jackson’s career needs a pick-me-up, which clearly it does, she should “shock” on her time.

Why aren’t there any outcries about the implied sexual violence of ripping her bodice in the first place? The boob isn’t offensive. Timberlake ripping her clothes off is.

Why do we have to be outraged all the time? We don’t.

Howard Dean always seemed like the most adult candidate (whether you agree with him or not). There was a refershing nobility in his refusal to trot out his wife for campaign purposes, made sensible observations about what was going on (not to stir controversy, but it seems pretty self-evident that the capture of Saddam Hussein will not make us more safe….there’s plenty of reasons to celebrate the capture as I did, but it did not make us more safe). And it comes as no surprise that he should see this latest scandal as nonsense.
Then he crashed and became like all the other repulsive politicians and indeed trotted out his wife for stupid interviews that any dignified man would have rejected out of hand (of course that rules out all of the other candidates on both sides).
Unfortunately the electrorate confirmed their imbecility once again, showing they can’t handle a grown man running for office, but would much prefer a man who prances around air-carriers in jumpsuits or make incomprehensible justifications for their decisions to vote for war but not support it.
I swear, if there was any other system of governance other than democracy……Go back and read The Republic and tell me that Plato didn’t see this bastardised version of democracy more than 2,500 years ago.

Reading over my comment. I would say in fact rather than the voters, it was the media that showed they couldn’t handle a grown adult running for president who refuses to abandon all dignity and roll over when told and speak in baby language in his run for the presidency.

Will do. Outcry! Outcry! Look at the implied sexual violence of ripping her bodice in the first place! Come see the repression inherent in the system! FASCISTS!!

Yeah, what’s the big deal? We need more singers in public television screaming they are gonna get girls naked and ripping of clothes to expose breasts. Preferably every night so kids are gonna get used to it. It’s just normal, acceptable, fine behaviour and anyone who thinks otherwise is just silly.
