Jock blogs
: I went looking to see who was blogging the Super Bowl. ESPN is (of course). And so I start reading Bill Simmons’ blog and see this:

I’m going to miss Houston. Remember when the Zionists kidnapped Patty Hearst, and she started to identify with them, and pretty soon she was robbing banks? That’s how I’m feeling. I like being miserable. I love traffic. I don’t need to see the sun ever again. I might never leave.

The Zionists? Zionists? Yes, Patty went to work in a California kibbutz and ran a bank instead of robbed one. Man.

Jocks.

: Meanwhile, Oliver Willis is blogging Beyonce.

: UPDATE: Simmons blog now corrected, a commenter informs us. This sure beats paper, huh?

Gah! As a Rams fan, I can’t bear to watch the game, but it seems everyone is blogging it, too. Grrr

I’ve got the game going too…not much to blog at this point. but the half-time show was pretty “revealing”.

I think I can do 1 1/2 things at the same time. Apparently a streaker just crossed the field. What do I care, I just watched a guy who had jock-itch on stage for a few minutes. I wanted to deliver him the cure, industrial bleach. Then he would be bein’ his bad self, and finally learning how to dance.
Who tf was that pregame guy, an aging punker, possibly aerosmith? He look like a monkey who eat many bananas at the same time. Thus the gigantic mouth and bad voice.
Then on comes J.J., looking almost exactly like M.J., except for the color, of course. I think there is a judgement problem here, though I certainly didn’t notice it before. I’m thinking, “that guy, Osama, I can see his point.”
Except it’s too pathetic. Actually, it’s not strictly pathetic: it’s very funny, more – uh – Shakesperian?
Then I hear Sin Q was a Zionist. Wait a minute, I was there, at Vacaville. I knew Sin Q, but I can’t remember his “real” name right now, if it was his real name. All the guy could talk about, when I knew him, was how many roaches could fit on the head of Jimmy Jones — not the Handyman — but the Koolaide man, who delivered his potion to his followers, though no comets were available at the time.
But, back to the game. Wait, now they are talking about Cialis, some erectile enhancer, to make my ancient woman feel good. Back to the game.

Yeah, I saw the same comment and did a doubletake. Surely it can’t be too hard to tell the difference between the Symbionese Liberation Army (which, with apologies, was neither Symbionese, nor Liberated anything, nor was an Army) and the Zionists.

Mr. Jarvis, with all due respect, Bill Simmons is by far the smartest and most talented sports journalist and commentator working today. He’s insightful, heartfelt, wildly clever and has a large bag of keen insight, reference, and a true fan’s love of the game to keep him writing.
Like any raw talent who didn’t come up through the ranks of “traditional media”, I’ll be the first to admit Simmons is occasionally scattershot and even confusing at times.
But did you know that he got his start as an underground, hugely popular blogger back in Boston before his blog was given a corporate home on citysearch.boston.com? This was way back in 1999, and what do you want to bet it is one of the first examples ever of a blogger getting hired onto mass media for his talent?
Through the years, rather than stifling him and turning him into just one of the many thousands of horribly-unreadable hacks in the pages and screens of ESPN and SI and others, intelligent editors have “gotten” Simmons’ uncanny ability to connect popular culture hot points with the truest themes of sports, and they’ve let him be himself- truly original.
Further, I feel that this practice of reading just a small excerpt from a writer and then extrapolating opinion from it is part of the problem of blogging- when a great voice gets a shot at a national stage and a fickle audience, his debut is hampered by an influential voice who doesn’t quite get him, or hasn’t read enough of him to get.
Please, please, read a few from the Bill Simmons archive.

Jason – If Bill Simmons, the “smartest and talented sports journalist”, doesn’t know that it was the SLA and not the “zionists” (hey i’m a zionist, does that mean i helped kidnap patty hearst?) who committed this crime, then he is either very stupid or was trying to make a(n unfunny) joke. Which is it?

oh btw – the article has been changed to say SLA (not zionists).

I agree that Simmons is one of the best; the Hearst/Zionists brainfart notwithstanding. Give him a mulligan- after all, his team won the Super Bowl!
Good thing this wasn’t a mega-scandal; I wouldn’t want to see him fired like Easterbrook.
