No name

No name
: Roger Simon and I agree: We have a preference for named as opposed to no-name bloggers. Just a preference. I’ve said before that I don’t dislike or disapprove of anonymous bloggers, I just have more confidence reading someone who puts his or her name on it.

It should be an “all other things being equal” preference — and of course all other things are not equal.
I’ve gone under the same pseudonym for about a year, both commenting and blogging. People who really care could find out my name, but keeping it off my site avoids a lot of potential problems that you may not have to worry about.

I appreciate the support, Jeff (some obviously are feeling perturbed), but fess up… is that really your picture to the right? It looks a helluva lot like my cousin Sid.

I think I can somewhat see what you’re saying, but I will have to agree with Patterico above – sometimes it’s just better off to have a pseudonym. It’s one step further to figure out whom I might be and the average person who isn’t web savvy might not do so. Not being a reporter or in the media or self employed makes it a little tougher for some folks to “report” on things. I don’t think having a pseudonym makes you any less credible, overall. Worked for “Deep Throat”, whoever that ABC reporter might be… Oops =)

It’s not hard to find out my real name. I don’t really care, but my alias says something about my attitudes to those who recognize it, and I want to keep attitudinal stuff separate from professional stuff. They don’t always mix well, and I’m tired of some people confusing my personal belief set with my (statistical analysis) professional work. I never deny either one, and both come with working email addresses.

I think it’s different to be anonymous than when using a pen name, as it’s my case. In certain countries, like France, or Spain (I guess in most of Europe) it’s difficult to have a pro-Iraq liberation, pro-US position.
Besides, I use it consistently in all my blogging and commenting, so the persona has taken a life and can’t kill it! I did think about it, but then realized that the ‘counter’ would be back to zero.
And I let people know privately who I am, so it’s always possible to trace me. Aren’t I, Roger? :-)
