Just don’t let it happen again

Just don’t let it happen again
: NPR ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin issues an impressive apology for dismissing blogs:

Finally, an apology: In an e-mail to a listener, I dismissed those people who criticize NPR based on information they get from blogs. That e-mail to Professor Ann Little (to whom I apologized) was posted on one of those blogs, www.mediawhoresonline.com. The response from people who read this and other blogs was pretty impressive.

While the tone from some who wrote was rough, I get the point.

Blogs are, as I now appreciate, as legitimate a method of communicating information and opinion as traditional media. I was wrong to suggest that much of political blogging is “astroturfing” … Indeed, a recent Pew poll points out that an increasing number of Americans are getting their information from non-traditional sources. That fact has now been made abundantly clear to me.

You were right. I was wrong.

In future, I will pay closer attention to those who feel inclined to contact me, regardless of where they get their information. Political life in the United States is changing and so, it seems, should be how and where political journalism chooses its information.

Here are the letters that changed his mind.

Priceless, absolutely priceless. I chuckled all the way thru.
Mara and Juan are RWs. Not in the real world.
I guess they’ll have to start listening to Pacifica (?)Radio, their final comfort zone.

Sounds a little like the MWO fans enjoy a good old round of McCarthyite guilt-by-association — “Are you now or have you ever been a commentator on FOXNews?” I can’t wait to see their Blacklist come out!

It’d have been better if he said he would try to start actually reading blogs, too.

I love to start my morning with a hearty chuckle, and the idea of people getting “truth” from Buzzflash, Bartcop, and MWO will keep me giggling all day (and no, I don’t read the Freepers, either). Likewise the idea that Juan and Mara are now so tainted by their association with FoxNews that they aren’t fit to report for NPR, which is now just another tool of the facist right. Gee, do you think any of the NPR honchos are thinking to themselves “Wow. Our listeners are wingnuts!”? Another great example of religious fundamentalists hating heretics far more than they could ever hate pagans.
You know, one of the main complaints about FoxNews from the psycholefties is that Fox offers no dissenting opinions, that it’s all rightwing propaganda. But when Fox offers commentator space to two people who aren’t rightwing – why, suddenly those two ARE rightwing, or else they wouldn’t be on Fox. Make sense? No.

This is a side of Fox-hate that I hadn’t imagined. Juan and Mara hold their own on the various panels they appear on, and in fact, I’ve grown to look forward to hearing what they have to say. Uh oh…maybe they are corporate shills for the conservative right!
To become a local NPR member: $40. To see NPR being fiendishly bashed by the way-out there left winger inquisition, and being forced to respond in public, in a chastened and somewhat frightened manner: priceless.

I am increasingly convinced – by events here and elsewhere – that the left will soon start issuing purity tests in order to admit anyone to their party.
From big tent to outhouse in the space of a generation…

You mean some people actually listen to Radio Sandanista – I mean NPR! – on purpose?
Dear National Public Radio, I resent being forced to shell out my hard earned money in order to fund your self-rithteous, smug, oh-so-enlightened left-wing propaganda. You guys are nothing more than a not so cleverly disguised, tax funded mouthpiece for the Democrat party.
    I want my money back!

The definition of blog is becoming far too general if you include MWO… Most blogs actually strongly back up their assertions…

Ahem. By which I mean to say, it’s possible to get so swept up in talking about the “new media” and “journalism reformations” that one overlooks the fact that blogs are every bit as flawed as anything else.
