I visited N. Ireland some years ago while I was at university in Scotland. Most all the young people I met seemed to feel like their lives were completely out of their control — either in the hands, ultimately, of the N.I. government, the English, or the various paramilitaries. In discussion with friends it seemed a given that participating in organized violence was one of the few ways young people could feel any sense of control over their lives and society.
I bet immigration into N.I. results from some EU asylum mandate or similar policy imposed from the top down — add the race angle (justification enough for some), and, through no fault of their own, immigrants there become a walking, talking example of this perceived lack of control — and a target for violence.

Oh yes, of course, why didn’t they get the Arab-Israeli conflict into an article on Northern Ireland.
Jeez, what’s that Calvin Klein perfum called again?
