Forbidden Iran

Forbidden Iran
: I’ve received many requests from Iranian bloggers to promote Frontline’s showing of Forbidden Iran. It’s on Thursday night in New York. Check those local listings. Says PBS:

…a harrowing report from Iran, where reporter Jane Kokan risks her life to secretly film shocking evidence of a government-sponsored reign of terror. Kokan escapes the constant surveillance of Iranian authorities to record exclusive interviews detailing the systematic torture and execution of students opposed to the current regime.

Everyone should see this segment. It will be streaming online starting Monday and the web background on the story is already online. It includes an interview with journalist Jane Kokan, more of her interview with Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, and a resource page with a section on Iranian weblogs.
I’m actually writing my take on it now at blogcritics. Should be finished in about 30 minutes, but I have a bit up now.

Torture and executions are not really happening in Iran, it is a fabricated neo-con fairy tale created by the warmongers in order to have an excuse to wage war and profit from oil.
Life is good for the Iranian people. If they have a problem, let them fight and die for their own freedoms, why should we bother? Having free health care for us is more important because then we can spend all our money entertaining ourselves rather than having to wage the evil neocon warmonger’s war.

I’m afraid it isn’t just neo-cons who have been speaking out about what is happening in Iran. Human rights groups, feminists, artists & filmmakers (who were particularly vocal about the US denying visas to Iranian filmmakers) and even progressives have as well.
One student activist in Tehran, Kianooshi Sanjari, tells Frontline, “The free world including America can put pressure on the ruling clerics so they accept holding a refrendum – to decide the future democratic structure of Iran. But they cannot interfere militarily. We are not after American military intervention.”

Steve – this student is very right.. The people are fully capable of taking over the regime and attaining their freedom.. But the US Admin needs to be extremely vocal almost on a daily basis demanding a free-referendum be held.. over and over again.. this will give Iranians tons of confidence and ensure the inevitable.. They need to decide on a policy and not cut backroom deals with the regime to keep them in power.. My guess is that US Admin will speakup come Feb elections.. and the maintain such support throughout until July 19th demonstrations, etc.. Freedom must come this year – it’s important to keep writing and informing the American public.. The Frontline special tonight looKs to be a helpful piece of opposition to the regime .. we will see!
