She offers a worthy quote from John Rhys-Davies:
“Tonight when there are evil people in caves plotting and scheming to destroy their fellow men, we have seen an astonishing display of man’s creativity and ingenuity. Nothing that happenend on our planet today was more important than this. A tribute to the genius of the American spirit and all that is best in humankind.”

    Prof.,
It took about 10-12 mins. each way to communicate with Sojourner/Pathfinder in 1997.
In sum, it took about 20-24 mins. for the instructions to be sent from JPL to Mars and back to JPL.
I am curious what is the time now for Spirit interactions. I could not see any details on the http://marsrovers.nasa.gov website.
I noticed that there are many public events. But, not as many as during Pathfinder. How come? Pathfinder had none-stop events, such as scientists taking questions from kids. Even recently – a month or so ago – I viewed NASA TV to watch old-reruns of Pathfinder discussions.
(Full disclosure: I LOVED the Pathfinder experience. That experienced excited me more than anything so far.)
